Could Roger Avary be on board for Silent Hill 2: The Movie? photo

We've chatted about the Silent Hill 2 film in the past, and last thing we heard, we only knew that Silent Hill director Christophe Gans would probably not be coming back for round two (which is a shame, as I think he captured the feel of the SH universe pretty well). According to Bloody Disgusting, it seems like there's some possibility that Roger Avary may take on making Silent Hill 2.

According to an interview on ChuckPalahniuk.net with author Bret Easton Ellis, Avary's name came up in relation to a film adaption of Glamorama, one of Ellis' most popular novels. Ellis replied "He's going to be shooting Silent Hill 2. As far as Glamorama, it's just very hard to get the money to make it." Bad news for Glamorama -- and that would make a great film -- but this sounds like a promising possibility.

For those of you unfamiliar with Avary, he worked on most of the key Quentin Tarentino films (Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and True Romance) as well as penning the first Silent Hill script. Silent Hill 2 is a big story to take on, though. I wonder if Avary can do it justice?

Unfortunately, not even Roger Avary can stop this film from being a big bag of fail. According to the internet.

I have to say i thought the Slent Hill movie was really good. Easily one of the better videogame movies, but thats not saying much tho.

I agree with Kohlstream. I liked it so much I bought the damn thing, it really was enjoyable, but I never played or liked the games anyways.

Yeah , the SH one was one of the better game-movie adaptation out there ...

I dig the idea of Avary directing Silent Hill 2. He's a strong director who just doesn't do much directing. The Rules of Attraction is one of those movies that I end up throwing in the DVD player every once in a while and enjoying it every time. Last I heard he still has that drunk driving/manslaughter case in limbo, so I doubt he's actually going to be filming anything too soon.

Love the games, loved the movie. I'd go crazy to hear Silent Hill 2 would make it to the silver screen! Keep us up to speed, Dtoid.

That could be very interesting to say the least; I enjoyed the first movie enough, and can't wait to see what they do with a second!

Please for the love of all that is holy, no. Avary was one of the ones responsible for ruining the first movie (just because they have the look of the games down doesn't mean it was good). After the train wreck they made of the first one, I wouldn't be able to stomach Avary butchering this too.

And @ pascuz46-If you never played the games, how do you know you don't like them?

Did people really love the movie? Really? I mean it was like, kind of okay for the first half, before it all went to shit with Pyramid Head chase scenes and the Combine showing up and awkward exposition and barbed wire in your vagina...

SH was okay...for a video game adaptation. It doesn't really hold its own as a good film, though. Does the story have to be "Silent Hill 2"? Why don't they write a new one?

Roger Avary is directly responsible for everything bad about the Silent Hill movie, everything good was thanks to Christopher Gans. Harry replaced with Rose? Avary. Horribly boring scenes added after filming with Rose's husband doing boring shit? Avary's fault for writing out all the male characters. The change of the cult from a paganistic order worshipping a demon/god while getting high to a Christian sect that likes to burn witches? Avary. The neat visual design and effects, the only saving grace of the movie? Gans.

You know, one thing I think everyone glazes over with Silent Hill 2 is its awful voice acting. So I dunno, it's not like a movie would hurt that area of the story.

PLEASE, GOD, NO. Not Roger Avary again... Gans, yes, because he´s responsible for the great visuals from the first movie but the script was a failure: SH1 got a strong Lovecraftian story but Avary created that "burn the witch" bullshit...If that guy ruined the plot from SH1, picture what he can do with SH2... tsc,tsc,tsc...

Roger Avary is a great director in his own right. Killing Zoe and Rules of Attraction are both amazing works.

i think that they could do a good job with it, but they have to take a minimalist approach to it, a lot of what i found frightening while playing the SH game's were the void that you seemed to be in when in "dark" silent hill.

Example: the seen in the movie where rose is first confronted by pyramid head comming through a door in the background, and hes dragging a dead miner....as she runs away, the camera takes an over-head shot, and you see that theres this hell-forge looking thing going on below the sheet metal "path" that she is walking on, im sorry way too CG, the silent hill games got it right by having everything in the game totally engulfed by darkness, hell even in the "light" silent hill they still gave you the same feeling because tyou could only see like 5 ft in front of the player character.

I'm so looking forward to this! The first was amazing, you just have to accept it as its own SH universe. I haven't read any script reviews for SH2 yet, but it probably won't even follow the second game, it doesn't even need to be 'in' Silent Hill since in the later games the spirit world is visited in different towns. They better get the Japanese composer from the games again, his work for the first film was insane!

The producers have decided to promote gender equality by making every character a middle aged woman. Also, all the monsters are being replaced by digitally-inserting characters from last summer's smash hit, The Mist, because apparently a bunch of one-dimensional assholes are scarier than the original fucking game.
The mind boggles as to how much someone can fuck up a copy-paste job. Why fuck up a perfectly good license if you're just going to copy every other shitty horror being made at the time? It boggles the mind.
