Could Rocket Knight Adventures be getting a revival? photo

Word on the street is that the beloved platformer series Rocket Knight Adventures is going to get another installment ... finally. Of all the anthropomorphic videogame characters to come out of the 90s, Sparkster was easily one of the best, and this news is seriously bringing me back to my childhood.

German magazine M! Games reports that a new RKA is being developed by Climax and will be published by Konami. Since the studio's Web site mentions it is working on two unannounced games for Konami, the notion doesn't seem too unlikely.

Specific platforms are unknown at this time, but M! Games does mention that the title will be presented in 2.5D (in other words, 3D graphics on a 2D playing field), which is good to hear. I would have preferred sprites instead, but I'll take just about anything over a fully 3D Rocket Knight Adventures game.

If this is true, then that's great. However, nobody will be able to beat the first level.

One of my favorite games of all time, and the beginning of my love affair with Treasure. My bedroom was plastered with posterboard drawing of a Sparkster when I was a tot. If a new rocketknight game emerges I will scream, scream and cry.

Rocket Knight Adventures and Sparkster (both Gen and SNES) are some of my favorite games of all time. A new one is welcome, though the music won't be nearly the same I would assume.

Please be true, please be true, please be true...God, I have so many fond memories of this game it's ridiculous. This is the second game I ever beat as a child (Shortly after Mega Man X at age seven...for whatever reason I was into the ridiculously hard games as a child). MAKE IT HAPPEN CLIMAX, AND DON'T YOU DARE FUCK UP.

BTW- What exactly is Climax's development history? Name sounds familiar, but nothing's popping up. Have they made anything good in the past?

Rocket Knight and Sparkster were awesome. They both had a healthy difficulty level too, which was rare for mascot games like that.

The term "2.5D" refers to 2D graphics in a 3D playing field, not the other way around. What all of you keep calling "2.5D" is just a side-scroller.

@hpv: I believe 2.5D is a term open for interpretation and can apply to any game that combines both 3D and 2D, so lets not get caught up in petty semantics.

[i]2.5D (two-and-a-half-dimensional) is an informal term used to describe visual phenomena which is actually 2D with 3D looking graphics. This is often also called pseudo-3D.

If its true that's good news. If Konami dug deeper into their back catalogue for the right stuff, I'd rejoice more.

Let's hope this is a 3d game, because Konami seem to have problems transfering 2d to 3d design.

Good on the 2.5D idea. I'd hate to try to aim my rocket pack in three dimentions.

Have you ever played Gunstar Future Heroes by any chance? It is pretty much a GBA remake of the original (It is a sequel, but its very similar to the original)

Hey Destructoid, don't write off a 3D revival just yet. It could look very, very cool:

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q164/vinsanityv20/SparksterFurRender.jpg

Sure, he ain't my best model, and I rally just did it to try and figure out Star Fox Adventures-like fur shading, but I think he came out cool. If Climax is doing a full on new Rocket game, then I'm very happy - they seem to be doing a pretty good job with Silent Hill:Shattered Memories.

McSnow: Already remade Gunstar Heroes. Its called Gunstar Super Heroes on GBA. I still like the original better.

Also, Strider 2 was 2.5d as well, which had 2d sprites mixed with some 3d objects/backgrounds.

Also, ROCKET KNIGHT ADVENTURES! Finally, Sparkster is back.

An remake/sequel of an old game that kicked my ass numerous times yet was still fun? I approve, I want to see how well they can pull this off.
