That's right, it's yet another stupid teaser countdown site! Square Enix (and indeed, many Japanese publishers) love the Hell out of these things, but this particular one is a little bit special. It's special because it brings with it the cruel hope of a Final Fantasy VII remake. The page says "VII DAYS," and promises a grand reveal at the end of the week. Foreshadowing!
Teaser sites are known to disappoint, so I'm not going to get too excited just yet. However, a VII remake is something people have been expecting for a long time now, so there will likely be rioting in the streets if Square Enix is maliciously pulling on heartstrings for no good reason. I kind of expect that from this company days.
The idea of a VII remake has always torn me. I know the original version never aged well, but it's a classic, and I still love playing it. Furthermore somewhat rubbish Advent Children pretty much tarnished the game's legacy, and I'd hate to see some hamfisted re-imagining full of unnecessary cutscenes and bad voice acting. Square Enix's "celebration" (read, whoring) of FFVII a few years ago spoiled the game a lot, so I'm wary of them touching it again. I just don't know if Squenix has the same mentality and ability to craft a charming story that it had when this game was first crafted.
Besides which, there are about ten billion other games Square Enix has on its plate right now. Has it ever heard of finishing one project before starting another?
Regardless, a VII remake will be a megaton announcement, so we'll make sure to check back in VII days.
[Update: Some hidden artwork on the site has been discovered, and it's beginning to look like Square Enix was yanking our chains again. The art style is possibly hinting at a Lord of Vermillion game. We'll have to see, but it looks like VII fans may be disappointed. Again.]
Give me my emo Clouds and crybaby Sepheroth's now!
If this is a VII remake, I will go buy another PS3 today. No questions asked!

I think Square decided to fuck with people on Dtoid after seeing it was FFVII retrocast night.
As much as I want to bash the entire FFVII revisit, it gave us Crisis Core, which I fucking loved. Anyone with a PSP NEEDS to play this game. It also has one of the most interesting game endings ever.
And all you criticised were the graphics, the game came out over 10 freaking years ago, and I'm sorry, but what other game do you know on the PSone that has bloody character textures? Oh yeah, remember MGS with it's textured suit? Uh no. Of course the graphics aren't going to stand up to today's games, but the game play and story telling stands up to most modern RPGs. It's better than that trial and error piece of shit Valkyria Chronicles.
An arcade game. The only arcade near me still thrives off of MvC2. I couldn't even have hopes of ever seeing this. :p
Gaming bliss for me, a huge middle finger to everyone else.
Please tell me they're doing DS remakes of VII, VI and V. I just really want to see a 3d VI and V.
...what? I can dream.
Considering it's still readily available in greatest hits form even today, it's safe to say the PSN release will saturate in 2-3 years, which is when the remake would be done if announced soon.
From an economic/business standpoint that makes sense. I'm on the fence with the idea of a remake. A ton of people voice there opinion saying that it hasn't aged well, but I hold a special place in my heart for those popeye looking polygons. It probably wont transition well because the humor of those character models wont be there anymore with a remake. For example, the team is on the boat heading towards playa del sol, and Red XIII is in the Shinra uniform flailing around was one of my funniest moments in the game. I just dont think they would be able to pull that same humor with more realistic graphics.
I called it if it happens.
Third party support means victory. Vii days are upon us.
I liked Advent Children, unlike the super spoiled FF7 fans I'm actually grateful for what we've gotten.
@Colette
It wouldn't entirely be off. They did semi-remake/port FF6 to the GBA a little while back. So that could be their excuse for jumping to remake 7, not to mention the demand for the 7 remake has been a LITTLE high.
That's a remake.
