Could a virtual Avatar arcade be in the works? photo

Based on a survey Joystiq received by way of a tip, all signs are pointing towards "yes."

Similar to the arcade spaces found in PlayStation Home that you all know and desperately love, Microsoft's unnamed Avatar hub will let gamers stand around, waiting to see if any "hot chicks" show up. Also, they can play arcade games if they want, I guess.

That is, of course, assuming this is all real. The screenshots look pretty convincing, so I'm inclined to say that it is; however, that doesn't mean the project will ever see the light of day. On the survey, Microsoft gave out a few potential names for the Avatar arcade, which leads me to believe it could still be very much a concept.

All jokes aside, is this something Xbox 360 players would want to see?

No, cause I really don't see the point.

If someone can somehow recreate the arcade atmosphere online then i'm down.

Actually, fuck it. I'm going to the Arcade. There's one 3 hours away.

Doesn't Playstation Home suck and just be horrible all the time, or whatever?

Don't really see the point. The current XBL set-up is great. The avatars are kind of dumb and useless and trying to make them matter seems to be asking for trouble.

If this is as shitty as Home is, I hope Microsoft doesn't do this.

If it's free, it looks fun to me. I always have a random 5 mins to kill. If it's another pay service, then no thanks.

I definitely want Microsoft to go forth with this, as I've never played Home and would like to try something like it at least once.

If it's a meaningful addition that's as well interfrated as (most of) the rest of live, I'm interested.

If it's as pointless as home, why bother. I remember thinking before home was released that maybe it'll be cool. I think I've spent a combined 5 minutes in home. Either I'm doing it wrong or it serves no point.

Home's arcade functionality was sloppy and annoying, having to log on to Home in the first place was bad enough, then waiting in line and THEN waiting for the game to load made me stop caring altogether. If they can pull this off with minimal load times then it may work, but I have to wonder if it will be free. If it is, then hey, I'm all for it. Stupid as it may be, at least it gives me something to do with my avatar. And I'm always for a free time-killing app when I'm half asleep on my bed staring at the dashboard. Of course given the copy-paste mentality of the big 2, I have a feeling this will be just as pointless as home, and knowing MS, it won't be free. I can spend 10 bucks in gas and drive to a local arcade here and play games MS will never recreate, namely the Japanese version of Taiko Drum Master.

Last hope of what? How is any of this affecting you? Fuckin' seriously.

People can criticize but do they have to take it so personally?

As long as I don't have it thrown at me I don't care what they do. There's enough unavoidable eye-sore on the dashboard as it is.

It could be cool, as long as they don't screw it up by microtransactioning it to death. Like they seem to do with everything else, that they do on the 360.

I just hope they build in scarcity with the arcade so I can wait in line to play some crappy port of a crappy arcade game. I love waiting in lines!

I really injoy Playstation Home so I'd be happy if this were to become real. Of course it will have to be free and not have a lame name.

Hit.

Oh, so another "me-too" feature from Microsoft. Seriously, they make me want to hate them.
When my 360 dies again, I will. But until then I have Forza 3 and Crackdown 2 to look forward to. Xbox "Home" does not interest me in the slightest.

I would hope they wouldn't charge anything for this, but considering they sell retro games on XBLA, I don't see what they'll do. Will they stop selling the games that you can play here for free, or will they start charging per play to play these games? Or will you just have to own the game to play it at all?

"If it's free"

THIS FUCKING MICROSHAF%T! OF course it's not going to be free. Don't be stupid.

HOME is lacking in, uh, things, but this is how different? Sure you can bring up the ques or the login as faults but as it stands, apart from a few annoyances this is pretty much a little part of HOME.

Plus, check out the Japanes Home - it's the bollocks!

Providing Sony bring the TV's, Picture Frames etc to HOME by the time (if it ever) get's out of Beta it will be superb. Would be really nice to have my friends round to my home space to watch those episodes of the wire.

Incorporate the PSeye and you've got a virtual hang out, but not without those all important TV's, Picture frames etc.

Sexualchocolate - So Home can do little wrong in your eyes, despite it still being unfinished, and still just a mild curiosity to most. I'm shocked that things I saw previewed by Sony over 2 years ago (TVs, Picture Frames) are still not in there. Ferfuxsake, how hard can it be??!?

Oh, back on topic, this could just be an alternative way to access your owned XBLA games, which merely introduces a pointless extra wait. Virtual supermarkets tend to work by shopping from lists, not virtual 3D aisles where you have to actually look for something and walk to it. I can't see the point in additional frippery to the task of booting a game.

Now, if the arcade had machines you could gamble your msp on... :D

Uh no Meson - "it's lacking, things" I rarely go into Home, I certainly wouldn't say it can do no wrong in my eyes! I think it's pretty poor as it is, but if Sony can get round the performance rights issues with TV's etc they could completely transform it into something brilliant.

However around the Gameshows HOME shows it's benefit, it's nice to head to the even space, watch the press conference while chatting with others watching the press conference. Perhaps having a dance in front of a giant Kaz Harai talking about the Go.

No it's not perfect, as it is, it's not even good, but if/when they put in the ideas shown at the start it COULD be superb.
