If there's one thing more controversial than a Grand Theft Auto release, it's Grand Theft Auto mods. While these tweaks and additions to the game are not officially endorsed, they can still cause trouble, as Hot Coffee proved. Recently, some videos have hit Youtube depicting real-life police cruisers that have been reproduced in the game, and police officials aren't happy.
Videos are currently depicting cars from Prince William County, Montgomery County, and Fairfax County in Washington D.C. More than the simple appearance of the cars, cops are upset at some of the things the car's riders are doing, such as stepping out of the vehicle in full police uniform and gunning down innocent civilians, something that the police want to assure us they do NOT do.
"One of the reasons we find it in poor taste is because of the way the officers are depicted," said FCPD spokesman Don Gotthardt.
The modder clearly doesn't mean any harm by this and was just making textures based on real-life vehicles. Checking out the video of the guy claiming to have made them (below the jump), it doesn't look like he was deliberately trying to piss anybody off. It's understandable that the cops are upset, of course, but it's just a silly mod and I doubt anybody playing GTA: San Andreas thinks that all cops like to get out of their cars and randomly shoot people.
Just the really dedicated cops do that.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
This isnt GTA IV, why would anyone care.
ROFL. Thx for the reassurance
anyways....I don't know why they're getting all up and hot about it. If they have time to still look at games this way, they have time to accept games as a regular medium like movies/music/etc.
You obviously never have been in da hood .
Damn, do they fear a potential cop killer from video games or what.
1. Like Drauglim pointed out the game is San Andreas, not GTA IV...It was pretty obvious by the video(The drastic HUD difference)...
2. http://www.4shared.com/dir/8820679/8b71e738/sharing.html That's the sharing site. This particular skin was uploaded August, 2008 (He also has dozens of other skins, which he makes per request...including 'Japanese'). So it's old news. (While new news for NBC who just ran this story)
3. There's no need for this news, it's just people stirring the shit pot again. The skins are almost a year old, Rockstar did not make these or endorse these. This is just proof that 'yellow journalism' is continuing to ruin our brains.
I'm starting to think that we as a gaming community are adding to the problem of negative video game reporting in the news. Every time someone even mentions a video games, the whole community is up in arms about how bad it is for them, and how everyone is out to get them. Again, I'm not speaking about the Destructoid community. Gamepolitics is hurting the 'gamer image', and not helping it. This is because of their biased reporting which seeks to just counteract the general media's perception of gamers, and not actively trying to fix it. I've been loosing all my respect for Gamepolitics as it continues to promote the ECA as the only way gamers can save themselves from the 'cruel world'. The only way we can fix this misconception is if we are willing to grow up as a community and be reasonable.
These cops are risking their lives, everyday to protect us. And we can't at least understand why they are hurt by this? Most cops aren't out to get you. Yes, there are some bad cops and those are the only ones we hear about, but again, not everyone is out to get you. God, I sound like I'm talking to a bunch of schizophrenic patients. And cops, calm down, only the truly mentally distributed are going to take this serious. 99.99% of people will not be affected by playing this mod.
//end rant.
