As PAX opened its doors, both myself and my camera man Daneil Carneiro made a bee-line for Valve, to settle down to see the new trailer for co-op mode in Portal 2.

We were utterly excited to see it, but after my fan-girl episode with Doug Lombardi at gamescom, I think I scared him. We were shipped off to interview the lovely Eric Wolpaw, writer for Portal 2, who gives us insight into the building of the relationships in Portal 2, and the many new features we can expect to see in the sequel.

@Ilort Het

Only sad, lonely people with no friends would whine about this.

I already went over this in another thread.
I have friends, just not friends that play video games. Even if I did have friends that played video games, I would be forced to wait for them to become available just to play my own video game, and I would have to buy another controller.

inb4 more gamers who can't see things from other's perspective.

@llort het/teh troll:
There's still single player, and it's longer than the first one, so why complain? I understand that you'd have to buy another controller, but the single player's longer, so it takes nothing away from the game. If you feel lke you're not missing out, then you aren't. It's all about how each person feels. *shrugs*

I'm just kind of disappointed because this could have easily become my favorite game of all time. The only thing holding the first portal back from achieving this was its shortness. Since this games single player is still only twice as long as the first portal, it still is way too short for my tastes, especially at 60 dollars. Anyway I am absolutely going to buy this game, I'm just sad that they made so much of the game requiring a second person.

@llort het:

I see your point, I wouldn't want to pay 'top dollar' for something if I wasn't feasibly 'able' to use part of it. That said, I think a lot of people are excited regardless, and it's a nice touch that shows they're thinking outside the box as it were.

But yeah, I see your point, just the retarded part seemed a bit extreme. I'm personally looking forward to it for the single player alone, but it'll be nice to play more with my friends seeing as I might well have the opportunity.

Yeah I probably shouldn't have said retarded. That's partly just left over rage from people telling me I'm a whiner with no friends every time I bring this topic up.

@thestripe

Sorry for "whining" but PC gaming is NOT for me, and neither is online play. I like my consoles, and if I do multiplayer, I want it to be local. I don't even have a computer that would probably be able to run Portal 2, so in that scenario money is even more of a problem.

Sorry, but that makes it as long as MW2 for me, I think. There's the puzzle additions, and if we're talking about the 360 version, that makes it even longer.

The rest of the game will still be incredible, hopefully. I'll be playing both modes a lot.

@ Josef Hargreaves

yeah, but most people don't but MW2 for its single player (at least I don't think so)

But what do you mean "and if we're talking about the 360 version, that makes it even longer"? Is the 360 version going to have exclusive content or something?

One thing I will say is at every interirw wen I asked 'what are you bringing us that is new'? The answer was always 'We have Co-op'!

Lots of focus on co-op play right now, not just from Valve.

@Hollie You could have pretended to be clairvoyant or psychic or something. Pre-empt things and stuff. I don't know where I'm going with this. It's definitely a good thing to have you in more videos on this site. You're a credit to Britain and Destructoid. :)

@epic-Koryuken

Sorry, you're not going to trick me into your creepy PC cult. Honestly for 300 I think I'd rather get a PS3, and like I said, I don't really like online play.

I'm a poor college student, so I can't afford either, so I'll just cut my losses and pay 60 dollars for the single player campaign

What sold me on Portal 2 WAS the co-op. I was looking for a new game me and my girlfriend could play, now I found one. Too bad it's far from release though.

Wolpaw is a genius writer. You don't get much better than Psychonauts and Portal.

He's up there with Schafer, Gilbert, and Grossman.

I was so happy to see that co-op trailer at PAX, and even happier that I got to skip the line and follow Hoygeit and Kryptinite's press passes in (why yes, of course I'm with them, why else would I be holding this fancy camera? Please don't ask me to show you the front of my badge!).

I completely lost my shit when I saw the bro-bots. Cannot fucking wait.

llort het: What makes you so sure that if Valve hadn't developed the co-op play that single player would be much longer? Either way, the bottom line is a lot of people are happy co-op is in there and will get enjoyment out of it. Why whine about it to us?
