Conviction not hitting PS3 due to 'link of heart' photo

Don’t count on a PlayStation 3 port of Splinter Cell Conviction. As Ubisoft tells it, Microsoft and Sam Fisher have a beautiful relationship built upon the solid foundations of a shared history. Fisher isn’t looking for love elsewhere: he’s getting all that he requires from the Xbox 360. (Also, it’s easier to develop for just one platform.)

Unnamed developers recently answered fan questions on the official Splinter Cell Conviction message boards. In response to one about the possibilities of PS3 port, Ubisoft explained the title’s Xbox 360 exclusivity as a ‘link of heart,’ successfully ending speculation that Conviction could hit another platform.

“Splinter Cell Conviction is a true Microsoft exclusive title and there are no plans to have Splinter Cell Conviction on other platforms,” the developer said. “There are several reasons behind this choice. First of all, Splinter Cell games are historically linked with Microsoft platforms.”

“The first Splinter Cell on the original Xbox was one of the first games to fully exploit the console’s technical possibilities,” he continued. “At that time, Microsoft really believed in the game potential and provided strong support to promote it. So, there is a ‘link of heart’ between the franchise and the platform. Some games are like this (think of Final Fantasy for instance).

The other, less fun reason why Ubisoft isn’t messing with putting Conviction on the PlayStation 3 is simple: it’s easier to make a game and optimize it for one platform.

“The second reason behind this choice is purely linked to production,” the developer said. “Having a single target platform means that we can optimize the game even further, because we only have one type of -- console -- hardware to support.”

Well, shucks. And here I was thinking there was enough Sam Fisher to go around.

You mean they'll read this, think something gay, then go on back to Metal Gear Solid?

Yeah, they'll be missing out all right.

No. Just saying, every time any exclusive gets denied a release on its competitor systems, a vocal minority starts reassuring themselves by denouncing a game as horrible and trumping up their own console exclusives.

Though I admit on a personal level I hated both splinter cell and metal gear solid.

I think this is a shame, for those who like Splinter Cell.

However, personally, I've not been interested since a couple of itterations back now.

Remember people competition helps to push companies to bring us better and better products.

I've never been a Sam Fisher fan; he reminds me of hetero-safe Solid Snake for the insecure tough-guy crowd. (kind of like most of Clancy's work)

That being said, it's a shame when a console loses out on a popular series.

I find it hard to believe that companies keep using the excuse that the PS3 is to hard to develop for. Whatever happened to motivation and "raising the bar" and "challenging yourself". ten bucks it ends up bein a gears clone or an fps.

This isn't related to Activision threatening to jump ship, is it? I know he said "it's hard to develop for" but it's easy to make excuses nowadays.

He did not say the PS3 is hard to work with. He said it is easier to make the game only for one platform because it will mean less work and you can focus more on making the game run/look better on that platform instead of worrying about it running well on both and adding to production time.

It makes sense, but Ubisoft likes money so I would think its possible their B team could do a port down the road. Either way it sounds like the Xbox version will be the one to buy.

well i would rather have bought this on the PS3 and its a shame that i now cant :( This is probably biggest game on my 'do want' list at the minute [also SHIFT]. The fanboy shit is a joke. I waaaaay prefer the sony systems and always have! But, I also think that splinter cell is far better than metal gear solid. MGS 1 is a truly great game. But, Chaos Theory is an outstanding game that I get far more enjoyment out of.

Oh yeah, the point I was going to make is this...
I think its great that ubi are doing this. I would have loved to see it on the PS3. But, think that putting more effort into making the game awesome on one platform, rather than mediocre on multi-platforms is a more intelligent move. If it turns out to be amazing and sell millions then the chances are that it will be ported to sony eventually. Also, things like this really make owning a particular console worth while. Whats the point in having two heavy hitting consoles that do the same thing?

Well, at least the PS3 still has inFAMOUS (and Prototype, but we don't talk about that).

Anyway. I'll be getting this for the 360. Cause Double Agent was plagued with bugs on the PC and I don't want to deal with that again.

Does anyone else find it funny that Ubisoft mentioned Final Fantasy? They say that FF has a "link of heart" between the franchise and the Sony PlayStation platform and yet, the next official installment will be on the Xbox 360 as well. So either Square-Enix needs to get with the program and understand this whole "link of heart" thing, or one publisher is taking advantage of millions more potential consumers while one is - against all business advice - putting loyalty ahead of potential. Man, this debate could rage for eons...

Found this while on the web, while a tad fanboyish the man raises a good point. I find it funny that no one has bothered to point this out yet.

I haven't cared about Splinter Cell since Chaos Theory, but if Ubisoft really puts the amount of polish into this game that exclusivity should allow for then it may just be the reason to jump back into the series.
