Controversial Modern Warfare 2 footage confirmed photo

Infinity Ward has confirmed controversial footage showing civilians being gunned down by terrorists in an airport. The footage will appear in the game as a skippable segment, covered by a confirmation screen that players will have to acknowledge before experiencing the content.

"The scene establishes the depth of evil and the cold bloodedness of a rogue Russian villain and his unit. By establishing that evil, it adds to the urgency of the player’s mission to stop them," explains Infinity Ward. "Players have the option of skipping over the scene. At the beginning of the game, there are two 'checkpoints' where the player is advised that some people may find an upcoming segment disturbing. These checkpoints can’t be disabled.

"Modern Warfare 2 is a fantasy action game designed for intense, realistic game play that mirrors real life conflicts, much like epic, action movies. It is appropriately rated 18 for violent scenes, which means it is intended for those who are 18 and older."

Infinity Ward looks like it's covering its bases with this hot topic, but try telling that to the legions of reactionary Americans who are just waiting in the wings to get offended by this rather touchy imagery. I fully support what Infinity Ward is trying to do it seems like a really great story could come out of the game, but I am not looking forward to the accusations of tastelessness and trivialization that FOX News and the other mainstream vultures will predictably launch into We all saw what happened when Six Days in Fallujah was merely suggested.

WE CAN KILL PEOPLE FIGHTING FOR THEIR FREEDOM IN THE FIRST GAME, BUT KILL A FEW INNOCENTS AND IT'S MEDIA TIME.

Killing is killing. I hope this doesn't spiral into something it shouldn't.

Wouldn't it be funny if while viewing a movie like, "Air Force One" for instance, a disclaimer appeared that said:

Dear Audience,

If you might find yourself offended by the sight of Gary Oldman smearing an innocent woman's brains on the wall, please leave the room for the next ten minutes.

It just astounds me how far we have to go the appease these idiots.

Good thing I can still probably get it at my favourite games shop.

I can't really say I feel good about the stage and the context. I don't care all the "its just a game", or "hypocrecy of killing people instead of soldiers", well duhh... Nor does it helps establish "the depth of evil and the cold bloodedness" of terrorists, considering you are forced to play as one while slaugthering a bunch of people. If something, it creates a great sense of detachment in a series that is famous for its inmersion.

You fear the shitstorm from FOX News? I fear more the shitstorm of juvenile players claiming "MW2 is awesome, it let's you enter an airport and shoot people. Some would even crawl away when I stuck a nade... it was hilarious". You know its coming, and its doing nothing to help establish the medium as something more than kids games.

It's a compromise, I guess.

Anyone remember the entry-level quests of the Death Knight in World of Warcraft? One of the problems with any form of literature, video games included, is that you can't (or shouldn't) always be the good guy.

I'm not sure how much controversy this is going to generate once somebody points out that this takes place in a EUROPEAN airport. Make the level take place in France, and FOX might even applaud it. (I kid, of course.)

Not at all. There are definitely grown adults who, even though they purchased an M-rated title, might not want to play through such a jarring sequence. Not to mention otherwise-well-informed parents tentatively buying the game for their kids based one the rest of the content, which isn't particularly "gory" compared to a lot of games. The fact that this isn't being censored from the game entirely is a surprise, lets not press our luck.

Oh god... Why put this in there when it is only going to create backlash? The media is obviously going to jump all of this. When FOX highlighted Mass Effect for its "Hardcore Sex," they are going to have a field day with this one when it actually shows people gunning civilians down. If they know it is disturbing, maybe it is best to back off.

Hmm.. so by purchasing Modern Warfare 2, you presumably know that there is a bunch of killing going on. But then we have to sit through a confirmation message to tell us when to expect exactly what we should have been expecting from the get-go. I would expect this in the Australian version, but not here in the good ole US of A.

Political correctness is way out of hand.

I don't mind it much but the reasoning is suspect.

"The scene establishes the depth of evil and the cold bloodedness of a rogue Russian villain and his unit. By establishing that evil, it adds to the urgency of the player’s mission to stop them,"

um....and that couldn't be just a cutscene? No, I'm pretty sure this was added to the game to get this kind of reaction. A cutscene would have no real controversy to go with it. But playable? Now that shit is ratings gold.

@ Jim - "try telling that to the legions of reactionary Americans who are just waiting in the wings to get offended by this rather touchy imagery."

The fact that this level doesn't bother you and other says more about you/others than anything else. Stop accusing people who try to do the right thing of being evil. That is what under the guise of snarky humor you are doing.

"accusations of tastelessness and trivialization that FOX News and the other mainstream vultures will predictably launch into".

You know why you can predict that? Because this part of the game is irresponsible, and people in their right mind should be bothered by this. I realize that you get paid and have made a name for yourself on being crass and shocking, but this video is Irresponsible and Disgusting. You Jim are just a vulture on the other side of the issue. This time you are wrong.

@Magnalon - In the army it's normal to fight and sometimes although hopefully not (based on the tales from my many good friends who have been in the Marines in Iraq/Afghanistan) kill combatants who are on the opposition. There is no circumstance in the army where you mow down hundreds of unarmed people in a public place, there is no need for this simulation.

What's the next simulation?

A 911 plane simulator game - "Hey thats edgy, bravo to them for pushing the limits"

A child molesting game - So we can finally understand how wrong it is, "thats so great someone is finally sharing the truth of the horror of it".

A Columbine reinactment game - so that way it will never happen again when people see how terrible it was, and how it permanently ended and ruined 100's of lives.

The fact that so many of you are trying to brush this off as trivial is disturbing. What in your brain says this is not horrific to watch, why are you so detached that this doesn't bother you? That is the issue that needs to be discussed.

This is the first time I've felt this way about anything in games. When something is making people sick just watching it tells you something. As an American I want to fight for freedom, the freedom of kids being untainted of this filth. This is the same as the faces of death. Simply irresponsible and disgusting.

You're buying a game where the sole purpose is to shoot people. Playing COD4 did you feel any remorse for shooting the middle eastern people? Of course not. This isn't real. I don't understand it. Fools! Now if they'd emulated Virtua Cop's block like 3D innocents who have the most atrocious voice acting EVAR nobody would bat an eyelid. As long as one didn't get shot by the enemy one had could shoot two innocents (Start with three life points, lose one for being hit or shooting innocents) without repercussions. Acceptable loss of innocents well handled.
Stupid attempt at (ptoo) immersion by Infinity Ward is to have enemy kill innocent after a disclaimer. Infinity Ward want to push the envelope in the current social climate of namby-pamby, but why bother if it's in this manner. That's what I think anyway.

Personally, I see this as the purely for shock value stunt that it is. I'm not looking forward to it and I probably will skip it every time after playing that part once. But hey, IW definitely has the right to do it and it probably will get them the exact response that they are looking for.

IW has the right to do it, those of you that support the decision have the right to applaud it, and those who think that it's tasteless have the right to condemn it. No one is right or wrong in this situation.

You question someone's manhood when they are the ones standing up for what is good/right, and your floating down the stream with the other numb spineless jellyfish. I think TheJesusNinja has it right, though I'm sure he's going to get bashed to all hell about it.
Just because something CAN be made doesn't mean it SHOULD, and just because people are touchy about it doesn't mean they are "weenies."
If I played this game (not buying from Activision, but might pick it up used in a few months) I don't think I could shoot the people, and honestly I don't know if I could watch that scene. There is a distinct difference between shooting enemies who are armed and out to kill you and innocent civilians in an airport.
Yes, it's just a game, but as stated before: IW won't make it a cutscene, because the want the game to be so immersive it draws you in. Doesn't that cancel out the "its just a game" option? You are drawn into games because you are "doing" cool, exciting, testosterone pumping things. If I'm really getting into it, gunning down innocent civilians for the sake of immersion, especially in this situation, is just plain wrong.
I think they can keep it in there, that's fine. But I think people need to stop insulting the gamers who think this is a bad idea or is offensive to them. I knew people who were on the flights that happened in 9/11. That was real, a real tragedy, and people actually died. Sure, this is "edgy" and "a step forward" to some people, but why on earth would we want to relive, and even take part in recreating such a horrible catastrophe?
Again, they have the freedom to make whatever they want, but that doesn't mean it's in any form of good taste.

Since when is Modern Warfare 2 a simulator? Last time I checked, Russian terrorists never attacked an airport by pushing buttons on gamepads. Also, last time I checked, Modern Warfare 2's story was fictional. They even say so in the damn press release!

Those "people" players kill aren't real. They're bits of computer code. I know that, everyone else with half of a cerebrum knows that. Anyone who plays through that scene and actually thinks they're killing innocent people is either a fucking moron or insane, in which case they shouldn't be allowed to play the game anyway. The Grand Theft Auto series is based entirely around the idea of going around and randomly killing people, but there's no outcry about that from anybody intelligent.

First of all, I am really sick of hearing all of the Fox News bashing, Jim. Granted, they may run a story on this that is way off base and quick to an incorrect conclusion about the game (Mass Effect?) but that doesn't neccessitate calling them out specifically. At least they aren't sucking up to the Obama's every 5 seconds like every other news outlet.
Secondly, I cannot imagine Infinity Ward presenting this level as a tasteless way to shock people. I think we should wait and see how they present it and what purpose it serves and I think it will only enhance the story in the end (much like the execution scene at the beginning of COD:MW 1). In fact, after seeing this video I am even more excited to play the game. Not because I have any desire whatsoever to kill innocent civilians. But because I think this will really enhance the narrative of the campaign and let us play something we will never likely forget.

Because it's become more then a story being told, now it is you doing it in first person. Two very different things. You will be making the choice to kill innocent people via a controller.

If this was a short cut-scene done in 3rd person and not 5 minutes of straight massacring innocent men, women, children. Then maybe I could see this driving the point home. But this is horrific.

War is war, if you assume that innocent people have not been murdered in Iraq/Afghanistan or any other historical conflict for that matter than you are a naive fool. The thing that really pisses me off about your statement is that fact that you are telling people that they should feel disgusted by this segment when the entire purpose of COD is to murder people. War is disgusting and pathetic, sorry that this strikes a nerve with you, but this is the reality and I applaud the makers of the game for brining it to light.

First off this is my first post reading the posts on here have almost forced me to sign up and post. I normally just browse the site at work/home but this has me riled.

Yes, i can understand how people could take offence to this video. The first time i watched it, my stomach turned a little bit. And that was with the video muted.

But seriously guys, some of this stuff is way over the top. Its quite simple,if you dont like it, either dont buy the game or skip this mission. IW obviously realised this mission would upset some people and has added the option of not playing it. Yes it does bare a resembelince to the happenings in Mumbai, but that also just goes to show how hard IW are trying to push home the message. They are not glorifying war or violence, they are giving a representation of it that is supposed to make you wonder about certain things in life. The game is no different to a scene from a film where the same thing happened. Just because you are seeing it through the perspective of someone responsible makes the whole thing 100 times more hard hitting.

The fact is that some people are going to run through the level shooting everything that moves, whilst others wont shoot unless they have to. If you dont want to play the mission, skip it. If you disagree with the game, dont buy it. It has an 18+ certificate for a f*king reason!

P.S The game is called "Modern Warfare" and as far as i can see, this is a very modern and realistic occurance(Unfourtanetly).
