You've got to love retro game stores. Where else can you go to buy a bunch of games and consoles you used to have (or already have) for five times the price they were originally priced at?

Sorry. I don't mean to sound jaded. I guess I'm lucky to live in an area with a very healthy supply of retro game stores, and my weekly visits have made me increasingly picky. "Is this refinished? Rubbish! Oh, and this booklet looks like sh*t!" I think these stores hate me by now.

If you're not in an area like mine, finding a good outlet for the games and consoles of yesteryear is sometimes a challenge. Luckily there's this Retro Game Stores Google map. Reader Coldguy sent in this map, doing his civic duty as a gamer to pass the word along. Now do your duty and add locations that you know of.

As you can see from the image above, there's plenty of goodness in middle America and the northeast, but there's a big gaping hole in the west. What's up with that?

Do you know of any good stores near you?

[Update: the map has grown steadily since we've first posted the news. Patrick, the map's creator, has contacted us to pass along a link for the site's new home. He says that they're still working on the New Mexico situation. Good luck with that!]

Looks like there are a couple near me in PA. I thought that my only options for old games was eBay or the booth at the farmer's market up the road that charges way too much for old games...hooray! $30 for Double Dragon 1, minus the box! $20 more for the game with the (beat-up) box!

no thank you.

Heh, someone beat me to posting eStarland near DC. I went there over the weekend and bought a refurbed SNES and NES. Friend tagged along to see if they had Steel Battalion...and they had two boxed copies for $120. They also had the huge Earthbound box with guide and everything for $130. They have a website where you can set to watch for a specific game and they will email you when they get another. Stay there for 2 or so hours just talking old games and what they had with the guy at the counter.

Huh... the stores listed in my area are nothing more than pawn shops really... Sure they have video games, but that's just a small section in the store really. :S

Still though, thanks for the link. :)

This is pure win. I've been looking for this sort of thing since, y'know, eBay tends to screw you in one way or another.

I'm from Michigan and wish I could add something to the list, but don't know of any places. But looking at the map I guess I know why I can't find anyplace...

video nutz in columbus flea market is pretty decent. i would modify the description, though. they do have a lot of atari stuff as well. most of the older games are pretty cheap, but theres the occasional that fetches more dollars (the obvious classic games). i stop by there every once in a while to pick up some sega games and thats were i got my 32x complete in box for a reasonable price. as for the one in philly on south street its okay, but relatively expensive.

Added one in Quebec City, yay... it's a really tiny shop(tinier than ebgames) but it's not bad, I found a factory sealed copy of f-zero for the SNES a CiB copy of Mario 3 on the NES for 20$ and some new games cheaper than big retailers.
