Contra ReBirth gameplay footage explosion! photo

The recently announced Contra ReBirth got me very excited. Like, holding-a-Trapper Keeper-over-my-pants-area-as-I-try-to-maneuver-my-way-from-the-cafeteria-to-the-bathroom-without-anyone-from-my-classes-noticing-anything-out-of-the-ordinary excited. The WiiWare-exclusive shooter is pretty much my dream come true: A brand new Contra game that looks (and sounds!) just like my favorite action game of all time, Contra III: The Alien Wars for the Super Nintendo.

The Konami game just came out in Japan today, and, sadly, does not have a North American release planned at this time. My retro senses tell me, though, this will most likely change come E3 next month.

1UP just dropped a bunch of gameplay videos of the game in action, and, if you are anything like me, you may have to find a Trapper Keeper of your own after viewing them.

Even though the game has an odd color palette (is it just me?), everything looks and feels like the best every classic Contra game has to offer. Not only that, the music is absolutely fantastic. I watched the videos over and over again just so I could take in that magnificent Area One theme.

Hit the jump to take a look at four amazing videos showing off the game’s first two levels. There are some boss spoilers, which is something I don’t like promoting, but the footage is too darn retro-tastic to not sneak a peek. So excited!

If this is anything like Gradius ReBirth, it will be my favorite in the series bar none.

A game where you die from very little damage, shoot repetitive enemies, and fight over powered bosses---it'll never work!

I still have nightmares from Contra 2, so I can't wait to give this one a spin.

As if a boss fight in space wasn't enough, you actually get to fight another boss while you're jumping from various pieces of space debris and falling. That's, like, the greatest boss battle ever and it's only the first boss. How awesome.

I also notice how you can actually hold two power-ups, so when you die, you lose the upgraded weapon you have active rather than both power-ups. This is useful since with this, I have a chance to never lose the Spread Gun, as it is the greatest power-up in any Contra game.

I also expect some crazy twist if you happen to input the infamous Konami code.

I'm not sold on the graphics, for whatever reason, and watching that first area has me worried. I know it's just the first level, but damn, is it even possible to die? It's ridiculous.

Which is more amazing... the footage or Chad's awkward, junior high flashback-inducing lead in?

Fucking awesome, looks like they are reusing some assets though, that is the same sprite from the top down level two boss in three no?

@Drack48,
I think you are right. Like with Gradius ReBirth, this game is more or less a remix of all the other games in the series. :)

Doesn't look quite as awesome as Contra 4, but what does?

Can't wait to buy. That first level looks amazing.

The music style sounds very arcade-like. I hope Manabu-Namiki was behind this one too.

Oh look Jonathan-Holmes, Dr. Venom is on the background of area 2!

My only concern is that, because it's on WiiWare, it might not have online co-op. If it was on PSN or XBLA online would be a given, but Nintendo can be pretty retarded when it comes to online gaming.

Man, in that first video, it seems like all the enemies would drop were Spread Guns and Homings Missiles. I hope they don't make this one too easy. They just need to follow in the footsteps of Contra 4 and it'll be a sale for me.

This looks awesome, just like Contra III! The only difference is that everything seems less grimmer and grittier and more cuter.

If this comes to America it will be a day-one purchase for me.

@Mr. Plow

You'd think it'd be a given but it's not. For example, Alien Hominid for XBLA has no online co-op.

Finally, confirmation that the two big Konami code games are in fact based in the same place!

Put this on a disk or cart, and I'd have a raging boner, but as it is a digital download, I'm only mildly interested.

The soundrack sounds like it's from a late 80's arcade sound chipset. That alone makes it extra awesome.

Meh, it's the same thing with Gradius Rebirth...it looks good, it sounds good, but it's just the equivalent of re-heated leftovers. I guess that's why I like Contra 4, they did re-use a few elements, but it didn't feel like a straight up re-mix.
