Contra action figures hit the scene; Teela breaks up with He-Man photo

I am not a toy expert like our brothers and sisters over at Tomopop.com, but I know a good toy when I see one. And, man, these Mad Dog & Scorpion Contra action figures are some damn good toys.

Created by John "Jin-Saotome" Mallamas using parts from other action figures, the Contra characters alone would be reason enough to have to hide your retro boner behind your Trapper Keeper. But what takes these figures over the edge are the made-from-scratch weapons! Attached to the guns with magnets (meaning they can be switched out), the artist recreated the Machine Gun, Laser, and fan-favorite Spread Gun shots from the classic arcade shooter. So awesome.

You can check out Jin’s deviantART page right here to peruse all of his incredible work.

What do you think? Are you as impressed with these as I am? What other classic videogame characters would you love to see this artist tackle? Random trivia: Do you remember which one Mad Dog is?

I'm actually thinking of trying to make my own custom action figures. Might try to make a Mr. Destructoid... or CTZ from the comic...

Hm.

I thought they were called Bill and Lance... Awesome regardless though!

Mad Dog and Scorpion are the pair from Contra 3: The Alien Wars if I'm not mistaken. Which would make Mad Dog player one from that game, IE the one in blue.

@Scary Womanizing Pig Mask,
"Mad Dog" and "Scorpion" are their codenames in the NES version. Bill and Lance are their real names. :)

My eyes are melting from the awesome amounts of manly-ness!

These don't look too bad (although I'm no toy expert), but the spread gun looks awful.

@Scary Womanizing Pig Mask & Chad
To be a bit more technical and all (I take my Contra VERY seriously) they're Bill Rizer and Lance Bean! Bill being our blonde haired friend, and in theory Lance being a more latino looking color with blue hair . . . =P Code names are lame when your names are as cool as theirs!

I thought Mad Dog and Scorpion ended up being different guys altogether. I believe that in Contra 4, they announced that Lance and Bill fought in the first three Contra games, and that Mad Dog and Scorpion were in the first Gameboy Contra.

Is that right?

@Jonathan Holmes,
It actually gets confusing.

In the original game, they were named Bill and Lance in the arcade. In the NES version they are referred to as Mad Dog and Scorpion.

In Contra III (best Contra ever!) they were called Bill and Lance again ... but then for some reason temporarily changed to Jimbo and Sully.

And then in Contra 4 (also best Contra ever!) Bill, Lance, Mad Dog, and Scorpion are four separate playable characters, obviously all different people.

Who knew Contra canon was so complicated?! :) :)

*did detective work like Chad did*

Upon further investigation, Mr. Concelmo is indeed correct. Except that while Contra 4 was deliciously old school and what Contra needed to go back to, Contra III is still THE BEST Contra . . . =D

It's awesome that I can beat Contra III on Hard with 3 lives and no continues with a friend... Or that I have done it before. I'd probably be a little bit rusty if I tried this now.

Bill.
Lance.
He he...
Hardcore names... Right?!
Still, those two are men among men!
Thank you, Konami!
Oh, yeah - Cool figures!
Impressive stuff!

Contra III: The Alien Wars is one damn fine great game!
The music and graphics are still amazing!
And it still holds up incredibly well, after all these years!
Still, Contra 4 is very, very cool!
Love it!

Impressive custom figures indeed... also, I'm pretty sure Mad Dog/Lance is the guy with the black hair... it's been a while since I played Contra. Also, high five for Contra 3 being the best one!

I was whipping it out (my credit card) and then halfway through I find out they're customs.

Total action figure blueballs.

Still neat.

They should have shown Bill and Lance standing all badass with a weapon in each hand like when you press the L and R buttons in Contra III.

@A New Challenger: You can try your luck on the ebay auction, but his stuff usually goes for a lot.

I've been following Jin for a while, and have always enjoyed his work. His GI Joe stuff is particularily awesome.
