Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Just yesterday I almost had a joy explosion from seeing some screens from the upcoming Contra 4 for the Nintendo DS and now these come out mere hours later? What, is it my birthday or something?

I could easily just post the same love letter to Konami I did yesterday (I think it went something like OHMYGODILOVECONTRA!DOLPHINS!), but, instead I will let you all just sit back and bask in the glory of this totally old school, utterly fantastic gameplay.

Seriously, people, the exploding bridges from the first game are back! THE EXPLODING BRIDGES!

And a grappling hook? THEY HAVE A GRAPPLING HOOK?!

Man, I really need to go lie down...

[Um, I think Chad is dead, but he mentioned something about there being two more levels after the jump. Whatever that means. -Chad's roommate]

wait... wah - wait... WHERE'S THE SWEET THEME MUSIC?!!!

(I like that there's a dude that physically plants a bomb to blow up the bridges) sweet.

I was actually playing level 1's track in my head while I was enjoying the videos... that music is CLASSIC.

Oh, man, I need to go and listen to it real quick. *leaves*

From what I've heard on the internets, the exploding bridges actually land on -- and kill -- dolphins. How cool is that?

Dude. That looks fantastic. I wasn't very thrilled when I saw screens, but seeing it in motion...

Ok, I'm kind of excited now.

I was a little worried about the developer behind this, but after reading the interview in Nintendo Power and seeing these vids, I think it's safe to say they are capable of making a great Contra.

I think it's cool they are going pure old school with this, but I'm probably in a minority with this next statement though: Shattered Soldier was the best game in the series. There, I said it, please don't eat me.

@ TheBrain: Keep in mind they also made the highly rated Shantae for GBC and the creative Sigma Star Saga for GBA, so they're certainly capable of high-quality stuff. When I heard that WayForward was the developer, that was what I thought of, since I never gave any of their bad licensed stuff a second look.

If anybody smells that, I apologize. I kind of soiled myself when I saw these videos.

Aliens, sea serpents, zombies, and feral dogs with mohawks? What a terrifying vision of the future! And one I'll be picking up for my DS day one.

I'm so hawt for those vids, and I've always been kinda gay for Lance.

But seriously... the only problem I've had with Contra sequels is the lack of the 30 dudes code... I could never beat Contra without it.

toast!
when i saw the screens i thought "man i hope they dont screw this up"... now that ive seen the video i'm happy :D

the only thing that will make this game even better is no passwords or saves.. so it's impossible to beat... man i cant wait :)

Happy Happy Joy Joy!
I noticed a little bit of slowdown when there's a lot of action going on. Hopefully that's fixed in the final version.

Damn, now I have to go and dig up my SNES ja Contra III... :-)
