Consumer tracking study indicates God of War III will sell PS3s photo

OTX Research analyst Nick Williams believes, based on a study, that one-third of God of War III sales will go to people that didn’t have a PlayStation 3 prior to release. If his projection is proven correct, Sony finally have a reason to break out the champagne bottles they’ve been keeping on ice since LittleBigPlanet’s launch.

Williams’ God of War III comment was at the tail end of a larger comment (via Gamasutra) about how the Xbox 360 and PS3 would perform in 2009:
... the PS2's continued success more than eight years after launch suggests that Sony is thinking long term with the PS3. If Sony can continue to bring down hardware manufacturing costs, it seems likely that it will offer a price cut by the end of Summer 2009.

The launch of God of War III in late 2009/early 2010 will mark a pivotal moment for Sony. But in order to ensure that this game is a hardware sales driver, the cost of the base-level PS3 will need to be in the same ballpark as the Xbox 360 and Wii.

According to our latest consumer tracking study, only two in three people who plan to purchase God of War III currently own a PS3.
So, yeah, games with bold, brutal protagonists that are armed to the teeth sell hardware. Microsoft should try out this strategy and see where it gets them.

Wasn't Little Big Planet, MGS4, Killzone 2, Blue-Ray, SOCOM:C, and basically everything else PS3 suppose to sell more units?

Yes, but no one made posts about consumer tracking studies at the time, all we heard were the usual manufacturer boasts.

While I agree that Sony was trumpeting their horn a bit too much about those titles, I would argue that God of War is a bit harder hitting when it comes to the larger demographics.

I definitely think that God of War 3 is going to sell at least a few systems. The ears of the 12-30 year olds who haven't yet picked up a system will prick up once they see the advertising.

I never understood why people wait for a particular game to come out before they buy a console. What difference does it make if you buy it now or wait til GoW3? If you buy it now, there are tons of other games you can enjoy until then. Oh wait, PS3 has no games.

I have to admit, I am holding out on buying a PS3 until God of War III comes out. There's a few games I currently want (MGS4, Killzone 2, Resistance & Resistance 2), but I feel that it's just not enough to justify buying the console. God of War III would finally make me cave.

This game is one of the reasons I bought a PS3 in the first place.

People waiting to get a PS3 can pick up some awesome current games later down the road at reduced prices. So there's that?

Sony can count a +1 unit sold when they release God of War III, because I'm definitely buying one... If there is a price cut in the system or I got a salary bonus.

I bet you, now that I've played it, that Killzone 2 is going to sell more consoles than they thought. If you see this game at your buddies house, you want in on that action. Add that to the stack of other games a person might be waiting to play and you get the tipping affect.

Wait till word of mouth gets out about KZ2. I bet it moves a bunch of systems.

Hoping for a pretty sweet GOW3 bundle is gonna hit the market. I will swipe it up. I just finally beat the first 2 games myself and enjoyed them very much.

It takes a research study to show that a PS3 exclusive game will make people want to buy a PS3 in order to play that PS3 exclusive game? REALLY? YOU DON'T SAY?! Those researchers are either dumb or don't know squat about video gamers. I doubt somebody bought a PS3 because they can watch movies in it only to discover and say "Oh wow, this PS3 can ALSO play video games as well? Awesome feature!" But then again you never know...

If all the quality titles aren't selling PS3 beyond Microsoft and Nintendo why should this.Epic fail by Sony, boasting as usual. They will never learn.

DO people still need excuses to buy a PS3 instead of doing so because they feel like it?

I'll believe it when I see it.

The PS3 has good exclusive titles, there's no question about it. However, there's a clear difference between killer-app titles and system-seller titles and quite frankily, PS3 doesn't have much in the way of system-seller titles especially when compared to the 360 and even more so with the Wii.

People said titles like MGS4 and LBP would sell PS3s but it didn't do much. Not even multi-platform titles like GTA have done much to boost PS3's hardware sales. It makes me question whether big titles such as God of War and Final Fantasy will have any significant impact... maybe with a PS3 price drop thrown in for good measure.

lol @ people who believe the PS3 has no games. If you don't like the system, or think its too expensive, thats understandable. But to say it "doesn't have any games" ...pssh, nigga pleez.

God of War 3 and Team Ico's next game were 2 of the big reasons I bought a PS3. The wait has been long, but whatever. I've been playing the hell out of everything else. Its not like we have a shortage of games these days.

Too bad GOW3 isn't coming out till next year. Yet another year fumbled by Sony.

@Demtor - yes, it has games now, but it took a long time. Not everyone is prepared to make a bit investment in a console looking only to the future, like you.

When people say the PS3 has no games, they mean it has nothing that makes people go 'ZOMG I MUST OWN THAT'. Very few of the PS3's games (so far) are both amazing and mainstream in appeal. Stuff like MGS4 and Little Big Planet are somewhat niche games (MGS4 is too weird and cutscene heavy for the average gamer, LBP... dunno, its odd i guess. I love it now ive played it, but before that... 0 interest), while games like Uncharted and the Resistance games are good, even very good, but arent anything that made me desperately need to own a PS3.

Killzone 2 should change that a bit. God of War 3 and the FF XIII games even more (I feel the need to buy one myself, finally). I hope Sony learns from it and gets a game or two like these out sooner next console.

I bought a PS3 because it's, well, a PS3. Say what you will about Sony, but they put out some mean hardware. I'll admit I have never been into the Xbox, or 360 since Microsoft products are generally shit. But before I get the 360 fanboys knickers in a twist, I will say that Sony's no end-all-be-all either. It's just what I prefer.
