OTX Research analyst Nick Williams believes, based on a study, that one-third of
God of War III sales will go to people that didn’t have a PlayStation 3 prior to release. If his projection is proven correct, Sony finally have a reason to break out the champagne bottles they’ve been keeping on ice since
LittleBigPlanet’s launch.
Williams’
God of War III comment was at the tail end of a larger comment (via
Gamasutra) about how the Xbox 360 and PS3 would perform in 2009:
... the PS2's continued success more than eight years after launch suggests that Sony is thinking long term with the PS3. If Sony can continue to bring down hardware manufacturing costs, it seems likely that it will offer a price cut by the end of Summer 2009.
The launch of God of War III in late 2009/early 2010 will mark a pivotal moment for Sony. But in order to ensure that this game is a hardware sales driver, the cost of the base-level PS3 will need to be in the same ballpark as the Xbox 360 and Wii.
According to our latest consumer tracking study, only two in three people who plan to purchase God of War III currently own a PS3.
So, yeah, games with bold, brutal protagonists that are armed to the teeth sell hardware. Microsoft should try out this strategy and see where it gets them.

While I agree that Sony was trumpeting their horn a bit too much about those titles, I would argue that God of War is a bit harder hitting when it comes to the larger demographics.
I definitely think that God of War 3 is going to sell at least a few systems. The ears of the 12-30 year olds who haven't yet picked up a system will prick up once they see the advertising.
Wait till word of mouth gets out about KZ2. I bet it moves a bunch of systems.
The PS3 has good exclusive titles, there's no question about it. However, there's a clear difference between killer-app titles and system-seller titles and quite frankily, PS3 doesn't have much in the way of system-seller titles especially when compared to the 360 and even more so with the Wii.
People said titles like MGS4 and LBP would sell PS3s but it didn't do much. Not even multi-platform titles like GTA have done much to boost PS3's hardware sales. It makes me question whether big titles such as God of War and Final Fantasy will have any significant impact... maybe with a PS3 price drop thrown in for good measure.
God of War 3 and Team Ico's next game were 2 of the big reasons I bought a PS3. The wait has been long, but whatever. I've been playing the hell out of everything else. Its not like we have a shortage of games these days.
When people say the PS3 has no games, they mean it has nothing that makes people go 'ZOMG I MUST OWN THAT'. Very few of the PS3's games (so far) are both amazing and mainstream in appeal. Stuff like MGS4 and Little Big Planet are somewhat niche games (MGS4 is too weird and cutscene heavy for the average gamer, LBP... dunno, its odd i guess. I love it now ive played it, but before that... 0 interest), while games like Uncharted and the Resistance games are good, even very good, but arent anything that made me desperately need to own a PS3.
Killzone 2 should change that a bit. God of War 3 and the FF XIII games even more (I feel the need to buy one myself, finally). I hope Sony learns from it and gets a game or two like these out sooner next console.
