Conflict in Africa dubbed 'The PlayStation war' photo

According to an investigative report at towardsfreedom, a decade-long war has been fought in the Congo over a metallic ore called coltan. Coltan can be refined to a powder called tantalum, which is then used in the manufacturing of several electronic products, including the PlayStation. The Congo is not the only place the coltan can be found, but it has become a major player in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s economy. So much so, that the country, its neighbors, and rebel factions have been killing for it.

Over the years, the need for coltan has increased, thus fueling a human rights problem. The U.N. has discovered that rebels have been using their youngest prisoners-of-war to mine the ore. After the mining, this child product is then sold at a discount to Western companies. Ooona King, a former Parliament member said this about the children’s situation and the reason why they have been sent into the mines:

Kids in Congo were being sent down mines to die so that kids in Europe and America could kill imaginary aliens in their living rooms.

The war has receded from its initially large levels in 1999 because of a peace treaty signed in 2003, although fighting is still going on inside the DRC’s eastern border. According to researcher David Barouski, the “PlayStation 2 launch (spring of 2000) was a big part of the huge increase in demand for coltan that began in early 1999.”

Sony has repeatedly stated that its coltan has been purchased both legally and ethically. I, personally, find it hard to believe that this could even be tracked. Obviously, there is a ton of history to this story and I have only pointed out a small section. Excluding the war’s dumb nickname, I wonder why Sony is bearing the burden for all of this? Coltan is used in practically every electronic item. Is this another case of videogame whipping disease, or do you think the PlayStation has this much of an impact on the region?

Well, let's hope someone can sort this problem soon in the Congo.

I also hope someone has some concrete proof of these allegations, otherwise they are throwing a lot of muck about with little mind to clearing up matters if they are wrong.

One of the main problems is there's very little respect for life in the poorer areas of the continent. AIDs, lack of good healthcare, rampant rape(in the most real sense of the word, no lulz, sorry) and money, huge amounts to those who manage to sell what is really compressed dirt, draw the greed out of the people.
How do we stop it?
Fuck I sure don't know. Res 5 might help, but to tell the truth, how do we fix something we can't fully understand, esp. when there are dirty, corrupt people in power(legal or otherwise) trying to keep it going?

Usedtabe: You are an idiot who has no idea how politics work. Look at what's going on in Zimbabwe, or hell, most countries in the world. You can have "democratic elections" but still rig the whole thing and underrepresent the people and not give a shit about what the people want.

@HPV: I never mentioned a thing about Bush, but leave it to a political infant to bring Bush into the topic of AFRICA. Also, though I don't really care for Bush, you do realize he has given more aid to Africa than any other president so far? Chew on that for a while, then try to form a coherent, on topic response.

@trunxkam45: Yes, because I mentioned elections didn't I? Oh, I didn't. I never mentioned voting in forms of the people's support. By support, I mean revolutions. Other countries have had them to overthrow dictators. If the nations of Africa don't want to bother themselves with bettering their leaders, by whatever means necessary, then why should I care about their incessant whining about not receiveing MORE FREE money and food. Most countires of AFrica piss me off in that they're one of the only group of nations that constantly depends on OTHER nations to handle their problems. But please, give them more food and money, so the dictators can continue to store it in their personal warehouses.

Wow, I had no idea this was happening. My uncle is from Nigeria, and I know a lot of the mining/blood diamond stuff, but I had no idea it was this close to my own favourite hobby.

Hmm... gives me a lot to think about.

It's ignorant to assume that, because someone lives in America, they must support George W. Bush. So stop doing that.

@ Usedtabe;

Did you know that George W. Bush refused to give extra aid to African countries that allowed abortions, resulting in problems for those countries? Sure, imo, abortion shouldn't really be used for trivial reasons, but there is something wrong when one country's principles are forced upon another that way...

He should

Usedtabe: You know, because the status of free speech and democracy in those countries has NO relevance with support of a dictator. And you know, because foreign powers overthrow a dictator, the people don't support that move at all. Just go back to sleep under that rock. You really are a moron. Or you could study the effects of WW2 on Africa.

I think they chose the PS as a shock value target, more than a video game target. In other words "All these people are dying, and they are dying so we can kill bad guys". It doesn't help them if they say "All these people are dying, and they are dying so we can use computers to communicate over the vastness of the earth and work with people from Japan and China." Just doesn't have that ZOMG ring to it.

@trunxkam45: No, your problem is that you mistake my lack of caring for lack of knowledge. I've studied the histroy of Africa. At this point, I just no longer care about the continent that won't help itself. And yes, you could say all day long that they are a poor group of nations so their options are limited, but looking at history, many poorer nations have forced political change. But whatever, you're a bleeding heart that assumes ignorance of people who just don't care. Good job.

Um no, obviously you are not learned at all. You would then have known that all the shit that the Axis and Allies subjected the African countries to (like using their resources to fight their war) compelled many nations to fight for independence. India was a role model of sorts. Yea, I'd say those are examples of the "poorer nations [that] have forced political change".

By poorer nations, I meant other countries that were in a worse state then those in Africa have changed their governments. I'm thru with you. All you want to do is lash out at anyone who tells Africa to handle their own needs and accuse those who you disagree with as having no knowledge of Africa, as if you could know what a random person has knowledge of. Like I said, keep sending them free money and food, and let's see how that works out. (Hint:Never has, never will)

Yes and even though I don't know what "poorer nations" you are referring to(Sub Saharan countries are probably the worst off), African countries have made governmental change. That's all I'm saying and your claim that they haven't is baseless, ahistorical, and quite general.
