[Update: Misunderstanding on my part. It's games, not Steam.]
No proper announcement needed: as Valve has been hinting at with images in the style of "Get a Mac" ads, Valve games are slated to hit the Mac. Valve's VP of marketing, Doug Lombardi, shared confirmation of the platform hop with MacNN.com but apparently didn't share an official comment or a release date.
So, what should we expect? The images suggest that Team Fortress 2, the Half-Life series, Left 4 Dead, and the original Portal could happen, and of course, there's always the chance Steam could accompany these games journey to the platform ... but we're just dreaming, right?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
The only thing that could make this news better is if Valve came out and said if you own their games already on Windows, you can get them on Mac OS free. But since that's a near impossibility, 50% off would be nice too.
This is cool that Mac is getting Steam stuff. It shouldn't be too hard to convert the file formats.
ah dreams.
Hell yes. I'll take two. Give me some Left 4 Dead and HL2. Especially if I can use my existing Steam account from my previous PC existance.

Anywhoozle, at least this will let people in the know not have to bootcamp for gaming, Steam-wise anyhow.
I game on a Mac Pro tower, and it runs both Windows Vista and Mac OS. It has a 3.4GH quad processor with duel Nvidia GTX cards, five terabytes of storage running through a rack of two internal hardrives and around 6 gigs of ram. I dare say that I have run Crisis on the highest settings, and it was glorious.
Don't be hatin'.
Once you install Windows and all that hardware on a Mac, it's not a Mac anymore. As it stands the main thing separating Mac's from PC's now is the OS. since Mac's use Intel processors and all. And I'm sorry, but OS10 is just awful to work with from just about any standpoint.
God I really hope the "console wars" come to my beloved computer gaming : /
I like Mac OSX a lot, but I guess some don't. It's alright, opinions are opinions.
Pretty cool that they are getting games finally though.
Explain hackintosh, then.
My MacBook Pro can run a all of my games on high settings smoothly btw.
Not having to switch between windows and OSX whenever the gaming urge hits is going to be nice. And I agree with everyone else in hoping we get to keep our accounts/games.
… seems to imply Steam is coming to Mac as well.
As for this news…BOOOOM!
yeah I am a PC fan ,but I own a mac.
Macs are more than capable of playing your video games.
I have seen a lot of people use VM fusion that emulates windows in Mac and have had little to no problems.
Macs currently have up to date dedicated GF cards now.
Being able to run shell scripts natively is quite nice as well.
Don't know what line of work you're in, but from mine the Mac is pretty much Ok. The sysadmins seem to like the platform as well.
Consumer loyalty is fun and all but YOU ARE FUCKING IDIOTS!
Overall, excited, woo!
Not really sure why this statement is supposed to be true. I can see somebody very knowledgeable in the field decide they hate macs for very specific reasons.
Personally, I don't hate macs. I'm well versed with Macs (Have had to fix many many Macs in my day). I just don't understand what people are so up in arms about. They're just computers, like a regular PC.. intel processors, Samsung harddrives, nvidia video adapters, and now they all run Windows. But, for some reason.. it all costs a hell of a lot more.
Like I said, I don't hate them. I just don't understand what the fuss is about. It's just a computer. Yet, people pretend like they're some sort of way of life. They wear them like necklaces or name-brand clothing, which I also don't understand. To me, Macs = bling ... and I think bling is ridiculous.
I work professionally on both PC and Mac, both are more than capable of doing the job adequately.
Guess why I use a Mac at home? I HATE THE HEADACHES OF OWNING PCS.
I like to point, I like to click. I like internet. I like porn. I do not like pop ups, I do not like exploits, I do not like viruses. I avoid all of that by not using a PC. I get all of what I want out of computing on a Mac. Now that it does games too with Steam, it's like a giant thank you for putting up with the no games on a mac policy.
FYI, Macs ran UT, Doom 2, and UT2K3, so all you bitches whining can go suck it. I was playing the same freaking game at the same time as a PC person, and doing it just as well.
When PC gaming still mattered to me, it worked. When I started on consoles for gaming, I never missed the endless parade of upgrades to keep up on PC minimum specs. or the NoCD cracks I'd have to go hunt down so I wouldn't have to keep up with a 9CD installation copy of game XYZ. Feh. Consoles were so much simpler to deal with and since Apple hated on the floppy so much, most early Mac/OSX games were already on CD Rom. YAY!

I love how in the first line, you say that people that hate on mac speak from lack of experience (which is obviously a false statement).. then EVERY single thing you say after that makes you sound about as ignorant as my grandmother in the PC world.
You see, I actually have worked on and fixed both Macs and PC's for 20+ years now. And I say with complete confidence that the differences between them is minimal at best. It's all PR and marketing and you, who claims to be well versed in the field are willing to fall right for it. Sad.
"Once you install Windows and all that hardware on a Mac, it's not a Mac anymore."
A Mac is a Mac. Shut up.
And I think Necron117 just single-handedly proved that you're trollin'. Macs can obviously kick ass at games. Keyword: CAN. I hereby redirect you to his original reply to you. That's better than most PCs. Besides, it's not like the usual PCs you find in stores are great for gaming either. Computers in general are weak out of the box. Keyword: IN GENERAL.
it doesn't matter how specced out your mac or hackintosh might be, you didn't play crysis on OSX. you played crysis on windows. why is that? because microsoft develops the most capable graphics API going. it's called directx, and it shits on openGL.
