Confirmed: Sakura Wars is blatantly better on the PS2 photo

The other day I told you all that the patently awesome Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love for the PS2 and Wii would be arriving on store shelves in February, two-thousand-and-ten. I also told you that people afraid of cheesy English dubs would not need to worry, as all copies of the game would come on two discs: one with English voiceovers and one with the original Japanese voiceovers.

Apparently NIS-America is intent on making me A DIRTY LIAR, as the game's confirmed release details retroactively make much of what I told you the other day utterly false.

The less-bad news first: Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love will not be coming in February, but instead on March 23rd, 2010. That's OK, just a few weeks' difference, and finally a hard date. However, the worse news is that Wii owners who don't like the dub won't be getting that second disc, the one with the Japanese voice acting. You can take comfort in the fact that the Wii version will launch at the considerably lower price point of $29.99, versus $39.99 for the PS2.

Which brings me to the better news, reserved for PS2 fans. The PS2 version, while more expensive, will come with that second Japanese-language disc alongside a bunch of extra goodies, including an art book and poster.

Frankly I'm glad that we're getting a Sakura Wars game at all, much less a Wii port (since the original PS2 game came out before the Wii even existed), and that they haven't cut out the language option entirely, but I'm a little saddened by the fact that I'm now a liar, destined to burn eternally in Malebolge, the 8th Circle of Hell. For disappointed Wii owners, all I can do for you now is offer the picture below, which is of Gemini Sunrise cosplaying as the girl from OneChanbara.

Which version will you be getting? Is ten bucks worth the loss of a language to you?

In before "Its more meaningful to me in Japanese."

Oh, loots like the weaboos already beat me. Guess I'm an "idiot" for enjoying Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell in English.

Its not a point I care much about unless the English dub is so atrociously bad on classic Resident Evil/Shenmue level, if its on a Persona or Disgaea level, I can deal with it.

I'm getting the PS2 version more for the other extras, couldn't care less about the JP track, though it is puzzling why its not included in the Wii version. Did this also not happen with Phantom Brave for Wii?

Even more puzzling is that you can't change the language tracks for the PS2 version on-the-fly, your save file is restricted to one language or the other. Sega's coding, FTW

Don't understand why they are gimping the Wii release. The game looked interesting and I don't own a PS2 anymore. Sure I could easily run it on my PC via emulation but theres usually some kind of glitch so not really worth it.

I don't think I'm stupid for thinking Black Lagoon is far superior dubbed. And this is coming from someone who mostly watches subs.
Anyways... I need info on how good or bad the dub happens to be. Whether or not the English voiceover is decent will be the clincher of which version I get.

dubs always depends on the actors and directors. Akira (streamline pictures= awesome!

Akira (pioneer)= embarrassingly bad

PS2 it is.

If I get this it'll be for the PS2 anyway. If I only had a Wii, I might pass entirely. My ears are still bleeding from that god-awful cowgirl voice in one of the trailers.

Pay less, get less. Makes sense, I guess. Still a kick in the ass, though.

I really could care less about the Japanese track, but I also hate buying inferior versions of games. Actually what will really make the difference is if the Wii version looks on better on my HDTV. PS2 games tend to look pretty bad on it, and while it doesn't stop me from playing PS2 games I like, it does lessen my enjoyment of them, moreso than the lack of a Japanese track ever would.

Considering the Sakura Wars franchise was built around the Japanese voice acting, there's a very good reason why you SHOULDN'T miss out on the JP disc. That would be like going to a movie and coming back out having not watched it. You don't know what you're missing out on if you only listen to the dubs.

Honestly, Wii owners are missing out big time. Kind of a shame, I think they should have gotten the the Japanese disc instead if NISA had to only choose one to do. Very unfortunate.

And that's what subtitles are for, you know. Honestly, if you wanted a Western RPG, go play Mass Effect. There's a reason this was aimed at a Japanese audience, and not us. Because of people like you who don't like subs.

So far Amazon is still saying both games will get the Japanese voice track.

Also Amazon has the PS2 version going for 39.99$ and the Wii for 49.99$. Both games are showing a March 31, 2010 release date. This is the same info that was up the other day when you made your other post about this game. Hopefully this time your info is correct and Amazon is wrong.

"You don't know what you're missing out on if you only listen to the dubs."

I listen to both, both English and Japanese has there ups and downs. Anyone who thinks one is completely superior to the other is simply put, an idiot.

That being said, I tend to prefer English dubs, since it's my native language, meaning it's more comfortable to listen to. If given the option I generally end up sticking with the English unless it's really bad.

Look, I'm one who supports both dubs and subs equally as well, but in this case, it's special. Now you honestly can't tell me that you enjoyed Gemini's voice in that preview video? Because while I thought it funny at first, and rather enjoyable to an extent, after listening to that again, it got to me.

Well that bullshit that the Wii won't get Japan's voice acting. Seriously it can;t be that hard to have two different dubs on the same disk.

@htrain400

It's the info NIS-A sent us earlier today. Like Gamestop, Amazon tends to give ballpark estimates until details are fully confirmed on yet-unreleased games.

Killatia, that's not it, they can't fit it all on one disc, that's why they're only giving Wii owners one, even though I don't know why they couldn't have just made the Wii version "premium" as well. I'm pretty sure they would have liked that idea. Most people are going to be willing to pay extra for this title. Some even mentioned they would buy more than one copy of BOTH versions.

"Now you honestly can't tell me that you enjoyed Gemini's voice in that preview video? Because while I thought it funny at first, and rather enjoyable to an extent, after listening to that again, it got to me.

It was a little annoying, I'll admit, but I've heard her Japanese voice as well and I wouldn't say it's significantly better, especially given that she's supposed to be American.

"Seriously it can;t be that hard to have two different dubs on the same disk."

Except it is. Why in the world do you think they would make two separate disks if it was that easy? There really isn't that much space on a standard DVD, and it's not like Japanese developers leave room for dual tracks, they just make sure their version of the game fits on the disk, and localizers have to work around that.

I've heard her voice in Japanese as well, and at least it's not cheesy like the actor was trying to fake it. The same can't be said about the American VA, no matter how much I DON'T hate dubs.

fawck...Voice Acting isn't mandatory for me as I can immerse myself in silly voice acting as long as its not Chaos Wars bad. The main issue is that with this I won't be able to choose. $30 for a brand new SRPG is nice though. I don't have any Wii SRPGs outside of the overhyped gamecube version of Gladius. Now that had some bad voice acting.

I'm on the fence until I see the first ten minutes feature done on this.

I'd be getting the PS2 version anyway. A JPN language disc is great, but I'd just rather have this type of game on the PS2. Artbook does more for me than a JPN language disc, honestly.

@Silent Protag
There are times when the dub is great, but it's just not something you want to bet on. I played through Persona 3 in Japanese and I loved it. I played through it for like the third time in English, and the voices just grated on me. Most of the characters sounded a little too old (most of the core cast), while others sounded way older than they should. Fuuka especially stood out as a whipper-snapper with the voice of a Golden Girl. If I had the option to play the game in English with Japanese voices, I would have gleefully taken it.

You know, its funny to me that people even take the Japanese voice acting bit seriously for this title seeing as, you know, this game doesn't look like it's taking itself very seriously.

Its set in America, albeit parts of it looking very Japanese for New York. Then it has mechs and musical numbers.

Am I really supposed to take anything about this game THAT seriously?

I was leaning toward the PS2 version anyway, but this cements it. The better box art helped too.

Strange decision by NIS though. I wonder why they did that...

Theory: NIS chose the PS2 version to become the sole premium edition due to the install base of the console and its history with these types of games. Furthermore, perhaps Phantom Brave on the Wii sold extremely poorly, and this is what NIS considers the best method of obtaining sales of the Wii version of Sakura Wars.

Anyway, if I were going to buy it then I would definitely choose the PS2 version. 10 more bucks for a handful of goodies is hard to top (unless the game performs worse on a technical level than the Wii version).

Guess I'll be getting it for PS2 then. Hate having to dig that thing out of the basement again but I'll take those extras/artbook/sub for the extra $10.

Anyways, concerning the unfortunate subs vs. dubs debate that has appeared here. I say either extreme is ridiculous. If you honest to god think EVERYTHING from Japan sounds better in Japanese, you're either a pathetic weaboo or you've never watched Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Black Lagoon, or Ghost in the Shell in English. Or even worse, you've never played Persona 4 or Disgaea in (their amazing) English.

On the other hand, if you think English is always the better option, then you definitely need to watch more anime...or your ears are made of steel.

It's not so much the language. It's the lack of the extras that sucks.

Still this is pretty odd. Usually Wii and PS2 multiplatform games are better on the Wii.

I kinda wanna get the PS2 premium copy and then also get the Wii version as well. Yeah I think I'm ok with that, I can justify it down the road for redundancy sake in case a narwhal shatters my game disc or if my PS2 or Wii are unreachable and that day I happen to be jonesin for some Sakura Wars... yeah I think I'll just keep telling myself those reasons...

Unbelievable, the version on the older console is more expensive. Then again, I guess that's because of the greater install base.

Gamestop has the pricing of these games altogether different. Take a look here.

As you can see the PS2 version is cheaper than the Wii version. Also the Wii version is 49.99, where the PS2 version is 39.99.
