Confirmed: Mass Effect 3 has multiplayer photo

Australia's PC PowerPlay magazine said that Mass Effect 3 has multiplayer. We've heard something like this before. Some questioned this blurb from the latest issue:

"That’s right – Mass Effect 3 is getting multiplayer! We travel to BioWare’s office in Edmonton for hands-on time with the series’ first foray into online gameplay, and chat with Mass Effect Series Producer and Mass Effect 3 Project Director Casey Hudson about the decision to go multiplayer in the epic battle for the galaxy."

Casey Hudson, big man over the Mass Effect series himself, made it all real with one little tweet today:

Yes, co-op MP missions for #ME3: they're real, and they're spectacular. Rest assured it's nothing of what you've feared. More soon...

It's real! PC PowerPlay, you may begin with the I told you so! chants.

I know you have strong feelings on this.

Maybe some side missions that are not on the single player, but that are canon? I'd be alright with that.

so Co-op only right???

no DM or anything??

i just hope they won't cut content for single player and release it bits of pieces in DLC

An interesting development to say the least. I hope it's legitimately good missions that add to the game and not just EA-mandated bullshit.

If it's like the co-op missions in Modern Warfare 2, and hasn't detracted from the single player, it could be alright.

Even though I have some nagging questions like if the co-op missions will be entirely seperate or if they will go with the main story, at least it won't be the tacked on competitive multiplayer that I'm sure most people like me were fearing, I think this may be a wait and see at the very least.

Better be some couch co-op in this as well.

I do not support this so I will be pirating it. Yes, I'm still going to play and enjoy the game but no I will not give them any money.

BioWare is no longer on my Day 1 list >:O. I hope DA3 is as good as DA1... get back to form!

Co-op missions? That's great news! I thought they would have gone the competitive multiplayer route, which would have been stupid as hell.

Now I just hope it's actually good, rather than some tacked on bullshit.

I am suddenly exponentially less excited about this game. If they just have to sell out and try to be like everyone else, then they better not have put a lot of effort into the coop. If it is merely a simple, effortless addition such as letting a second person control your squadmates, then by all means, do it. However, if they poured a significant portion of the games resources into making a series of coop exclusive missions with no local multiplayer, then fuck them and fuck this game. I'll buy it when it's discounted for 30 bucks.

I personally hope that the multiplayer is in no way connected to the main game, but if it has to be, considering that Shepard's the only playable character, the co-op features a schizophrenic Shepard teaming up with himself (and herself) in his mind after a Reaper attack drives him crazy. Insert gated dreamscapes the wonder team of personality facets have to fight through to regain sanity, and once Shepard wakes up with the team looking down at him all concerned-like he can just shake off the whole silly thing and never speak of it again, cus I sure as hell don't want to carry other losers into my personal trilogy.

My thoughts exactly. He makes it sound like they are side missions, outside of the campaign, which sounds very tacked on, to me. I'm sure they gave them all the love and care they needed to make them great, but it definitely sounds like they were thrown in after the fact for the sake of EA's online pass. I bet this is the entire reason the game was delayed in the first place. One reason they gave was to "tweak the game for a larger market." I'm sure that's what this is.

SIGH.

I don't play your games to interact with other people, BioWare. I don't NEED to, and I don't WANT to. If this is somehow NOT siphoning time and money and content from the SP campaign, if it's a completely separate and non-essential component of the story, and if it's good, I MIGHT put some time into it. At least one of those is very, very hard to do, if not impossible, though.

It doesn't annoy me that you want to expand your player base; it annoys me that you think co-op is the way to do it.

But, who knows, maybe I'll be proved wrong and it'll be amazing. God knows I want it to be.

I wont judge it until I try it, but Im not very optimistic about it. Most recent Bioware RPGs could be really really good with a co-op multiplayer, but they could also be very very bad if EA is involved at all(which they are).

In any case, Bioware has been off my "Day-1 Purchase" list since DA2.

Remember all the other times when devs shoehorned Multiplayer into exclusively Singleplayer games. Like what EA did with Dead Space 2, 2K Games with Bioshock 2 and Ubisoft with Assassin's Creed:Brotherhood.

All those games had one other thing in common, the Multiplayer sucked. And I have very little doubt that this game will buck the trend.

Co-op has worked great for other third-person cover shooters. If Bioware puts the effort in this could be quite popular. Can't understand why some posters are comparing it deathmatch shooters though. They're not the same thing.

ok co-op is cool. a versus would not be.

i tend to call it either co-op or multiplayer(for versus)
so when i hear or read multiplayer, i tend to think its VS.

If they do it right, then there's no problem here.

I, for one, find this silly. People wanted co-op in Fable, and they got it. Why? What's the difference? Sure, they're very different RPG's, but with Mass Effect's tactical style, I've found myself saying "man, if there was someone else controlling Garrus that could actually follow my spoken words to the letter, then this wouldn't be so damn impossible!"

Wasting company resources and development time? How long do you think this feature really took to make? A couple of programmers could have this hammered out in a jiffy, not to mention that Mass Effect is considered the killer game by BioWare, seeing more fans than even Bauldur's Gate. Do you really think they'd screw this up?

Granted, Mike Laidlaw dropped the ball on Dragon Age 2. I personally liked Dragon Age 2, but it's obvious to see what was wrong with it--it was rushed. Buggy as hell, repeated dungeons, lack of dialogue--all the pieces were there. Dragon Age: Origins was released in November of '09 and 2 was released in March of '11. That's a 16 month difference. While working on Mass Effect 2, one of the biggest games of this generation, they hammered out a game in 16 freakin' months.

Mass Effect 3 is coming out in March of '12, if all goes according to plan. Mass Effect 2 was released in January of '10. That's 26 months of development time. Ten extra months. Do you really think that they're wasting resources? I'd say the Kinect functionality is a bigger waste of resources. Our human communication protocols are developed throughout our entire lives, but translating that into working with the game itself poses more barriers.

So now I have missions that I can do with a bud. A bud who actually understands what I'm saying, so long as he/she isn't a prick. If this is done right, and if this doesn't detract from the single-player campaign in any way, then I don't see how this could possibly be a problem.

Hell, it might even enhance single player somehow. How? I don't know, but anything's possible.

People need to chill the heck out, yo.

if it even takes one day to develop these levels, that's one day they could have spent polishing up the single player.
