Activision has just release a new trailer for Guitar Hero 5, this one spotlighting some of the game's new features.
So what are they? Well, to start, there's the "GH Jam" feature which appears to be a new mode along the lines of the GH Studio from World Tour. The video also shows off the much-talked-about drop-in and drop-out feature, that will you jump into any song on any instrument on the fly. You can even switch from one instrument to another in the middle of the song. Bored with drums? Press a button and hop over to the guitar!
Not mentioned in the video -- but you can clearly see it -- is the game's graphic overhaul. It looks, to be quite honest, a million times better than Guitar Hero World Tour.
Oh, and the game will feature Blink-182's "Rock Show." That's a new feature.
Dammit, I keep saying 'no more chances, I'm done with Guitar Hero'...but then they get these random glimmers of redemption that make me reconsider. Is it too early for me to compare the GH franchise to Sonic in terms of constantly thinking it might redeem itself then constantly being disappointed?
Besides adding features the game hasn't changed in anyway. Why do you think it sucks? Because if it is because of how it plays that you are a backwards kinda guy.
The sensible reasoning for disliking the franchise would be for it becoming stale after the countless copy-cats and sequels.
Seems like they're finally polishing the title, let's hope so.
I'll have to check it out, but i'm probably gonna wait ''till next year and this year buy the beatles one. And possibly DJ Hero.
The drop in/out ability and the ability for 4 people to play the same instrument is pretty cool. But, have they said if the songs from WT will port into this one, like how RB1 and 2 work together?
I don't think the core mechanics suck, I think the series sucks now and thats because...
Activision are whores. Once Guitar Hero got really popular they just flipped the "release new game every year + who the fuck cares new features = $$$" switch. How many guitar hero games are being released this year? Metallica, 5, Band Hero, Van Halen, Smash Hits, On tour Modern Hits.
Neversoft did okay with Guitar Hero III because it remained at its core what guitar hero I and II were. Anything from there is just a cash in piece of shit in my opinion. World Tour was just a mess. The note charts were terrible, the note time windows were inconsistent. the menu system was shitty, and quite honestly the track list wasn't all too good.
Everything Neversoft and Activision has added to the game past Guitar Hero III I couldn't care less about. The only thing that is of any merit is GH tunes, but only insanely detailed people with large amounts of time will produce anything worth playing in that feature. Other shit like "ooooh battles with this guy" or "OH LOOK WE BROUGHT BACK HENDRIX FROM THE DEAD!" stuff like that, so passable and gimmicky.
Now stuff like drop in drop out co op, okay... so? How many times do you really think someone is going to walk by mid way through a song and be like "OH MAN LET ME GET IN ON THE MIDDLE OF THAT" play for a bit, then leave. Then with stuff like "now you can play as four drummers!" again, so what? Who would even want to do that? Who HAS four drums sets to play as. even with say four guitars, would you really have that much fun having everyone play the same guitar part?
I just stick with harmonix now. Rock Band is just a whole lot simpler, has a better team behind it, better songs, better note charts, and so on. Sure, due to EA's influence Rock Band has gotten to the point where its started to be exploited but the only three Rock Band games coming out this year are Unplugged, Lego Rock Band, and Beatles, thats still half of the Guitar Hero franchise. And aside from Lego Rock Band (which is for kids anyways) they're not shoving unnecessary gimmicks in there.
the only thing that i think remotely cool is the ability to join/switch instruments mid-song. then again, i would still rather play the whole song, not just half. wooohooo they finally caught up to Rock Band in graphics, took them 4 games. its possible, but i doubt they will allow GHWT's setlist to be played on it or any GHWT dlc. i'll just wait for rock band 3 (and beatles!!!)
I'll wait for Rock Band 3. I'm sure all of these features, regardless of the fact that I'll never use them, will be implemented in that game, but will be done so in a much better way. Neversoft has a habit of taking great ideas and fucking them up.
New features are fine and dandy however I'm more concerned with the setlist GH provides it's consumers. The fifth installment's song choice is promising and providing a bright light for the franchise. Sure I'd prefer Rock Band over GH but any game that is in the Music Rhythm genre I'll play (with the exception of Rock Revolution...Nice job Konami!!!) The ability to play two drums/guitars/etc. looks fun and eliminates the irritation of fighting over who plays what instrument online.
Ah, DTRiiX mentions online, I can see where redundant instruments might make more sense there, but I never play music games online myself - it can't compare to playing with friends in the same room.
IIRC however, the jump-in/out and redundant instruments modes are only availible in 'party mode' or something like that, so don't bet on being able to do them online with the scorehero mentality that holds court on Live and the PSN.
Ugh! I hope these features (well feature as I do not care for jumping in/out of a song) make their way online. I'm happy for the folks associated with ScoreHero but they do not have to ruin it for the casual gamers who like to jam out for fun and not score (unless it's for achievements he he) I'm not trying to 100% FC every song on expert, would be cool but no thanks.
why is it that everyone on this site hates guitar hero yet it demolishes rock band in sales? Don't give me brand recognition, because it doesn't get more recognizable than The Beatles. If rockband does not outsell guitar hero in their next iteration don't give them that excuse.
Does everyone seriously play these games totally alone? Surely not always? The amount of times I've come across someone else playing, or have been playing and a friend comes in the room, I've wanted drop-in/out for a while. Of course, I want it in Rock Band. I hope Harmonix take note, although I dont doubt they've thought of it themselves.

I mean, obviously other people seem interested, but they seem like shitty pointless features to me.
Anyway yeah I share the prevailing sentiment of Guitar Hero being lame now.

I think it's obvious that regardless if GH sells more, RB is the better game between the two. GH established the genre and RB revolutionized it.
Well, if we'll just take a look at how many games each franchise has...
Rock Band: 2
Guitar Hero: 9
Guitar Hero games would have to complete shit to not sell better than Rock Band.
