Confirmed: EA teams up with Steam for PC game distribution photo

You may have heard rumors, but a press release that hit our inbox just now confirms it: Steam has teamed up with EA for PC game distribution.

Valve announced that the following titles are now available in the United States and Canada via their Steam service:

  • Spore
  • Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack
  • Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning
  • Need for Speed Undercover
  • Mass Effect
  • EA SPORTS FIFA Manager 2009
And that's just the start: in the coming weeks, other EA hits like Mirror's Edge, Command & Conquer Red Alert 3, and Dead Space will be added to the catalog of EA's titles available via Steam.

"EA is one of the industry's largest publishers," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "The EA titles coming to Steam this holiday include some this year's top PC titles."

"We are pleased to extend our holiday titles to gamers worldwide via Steam -- a revolutionary technology that is one of the game industry's most successful digital distribution services," said John Pleasants, President, Global Publishing & Chief Operating Officer.

And Steam becomes even more awesome.

I hold my applause until I find out how DRM-infected EA's titles will be on Steam.

I don't know whether to be saddened or amused by the fact that the immediate concern seems to be if they'll still include DRM. That was my first gut reaction too.

EA's Global Publishing & Chief Operating Officer sure has a funny definition of worldwide.

Good thing they started using a good distribution system. The EA downloader has fail written all over it. Too bad steam just made their pricing a lot more expensive here in Europe.

Looking at Spore's Steam page, for example, it makes no mention of third-party DRM (while the pages for Far Cry 2 and GTA IV do).

Is it me, or have EA and Activision suddenly switched places?

so, for those of us who have shit in the EA download manager, can we get it on steam now instead?

no, i didn't buy anything... i got dead space for free when they messed up an order of mine (didn't send my my preorder stuff)

also, will retail-purchased games be able to be added to steam by putting in the CD key (i hope so, more games need to do this)

Considering EA was publishing valve's games at retail store i was wondering when they would go with steam. Better late then never i guess.

Nice EA things are going to Steam where the download/purchase process isn't a total pain in the ass.

I have to say that I never thought this would actually happen, so I'm plesantly surprised.

Oh wait, it's only for North Americans..... again. Consider me completely un-surprised.

PS: Steam store and website unavailable for anyone else?

I've always wanted to play a Football Manager game. I may have to try one, finally. I *heart* nerdy sports simulation and strategy.

Yet, the NFL Head Coach games fail to ring me in. Strange.

Am I the only one surprised that they didn't mash the logos together and make it StEAm?

Kool, If EA sees a way to profit they will go for it. Anyways those two have worked together in the past before, so at least its nice to see EA backing a very prestigious developer such as Valve.
