Confirm it already! Far Cry 3 briefly mentioned again photo

There seems to be this great divide when it comes to Far Cry 2. A good portion despise the game, while another crowd can't stop raving about its greatness. Where do I fit in? Nowhere. Right now, as I wait for my copy to arrive in the mail, I couldn't be more indifferent.

Whichever category you fall under, we can all agree that the game isn't perfect. Perhaps a sequel, using the same engine, could address these flaws? Now you're starting to think like Ubisoft.

A scriptwriter at Ubisoft Montreal by the name of Kevin Shortt has told Official PlayStation Magazine that while he isn't personally working on Far Cry 3, he knows "the team are and what I've seen looks pretty exciting."

Tell me, anyone who's played the current installment -- what needs to be addressed in the next game? Alternatively, what was done well, and shouldn't be altered?

The stupid enemy checkpoints were annoying as hell. Also, I hope they actually do great work on the enemy damage this time around, and not have them take 5 shots to the face to actually die. Oh, and if you're going to make an epic, open-world game, at least fill it with more interesting destinations.

Fucking loved Far Cry 2. Favorite non-handheld game this generation. I have a strong suspicion that those who hated it didn't play it on Infamous difficulty, which completely changed the game for me. What they need to do with the next one is add the ability to fire while driving, give you more buddies and allies that actually fight with you, more bus stations (just a few more, not like 20), and make shadows not look like shit on anything less than high quality. And airplanes or helicopters. That would be completely awesome.

Far Cry 2 got downright boring halfway through so I never finished it. I loved the graphics and the look of the game, but the repetitive mission structure got old quick. Even more unforgiving was the amount of time it took to travel between point A and B. Along the way anyone you meet on the road would chase you down and murder you on sight. If Far Cry 3 removes these annoyances I might give it a shot.

I really liked the Far Cry 2, but I think it could do with more variety (like Assassins Creed). The graphics were beautiful. The vegetation and weather patterns were very immersive. I really enjoyed the combat, but if you didn't the enemy checkpoints could become annoying. The voice acting of the main bad guy was just horrible. There should be a mechanic for outrunning enemies in vehicles.

I didn't enjoy Far Cry 2. Mainly because the setting was so bloody DULL. Browns and yellows do not show off your awesome graphics engine like the greens and blues that Crysis had.

...but I didn't like Crysis either. Neither did my PC, hah.

I don't think FarCry2 really had much I would change. It got a bit repetitive if you tried to do as many missions as possible before advancing the main story; if you didn't, however, the game could play pretty damn quickly... that sorta, make your own pace feel was very cool. I've played it twice and both playthrus were very different and very worth it.

Honestly, I hope they just make the next game as best they can and don't try to take every critics advice in an attempt to make it a perfect game like what seems to have happened with AC2.

This game which initially frustrated and confused me has become one of my favorite single-player games of all time. I have no issue with those who take issue with the game. I see where it could cheese off some. To me it's all in how you approach and play it.
If you need in-game story and if the term "repetitive mission" makes you queezy then thar be dragons here. I hated the first 2 or 3 hrs of the game (HATED!), but at some point I just "got it" and made it the game that I wanted. I figured out how to play it and what kind of loadout I needed to survive. It's a big "here's some targets now go forth and kill them in whatever way makes you most happy" guerrilla warfare simulator. It's a sniper's wet dream.
It all changed for me when I realized that the checkpoints weren't keeping me from the game - they WERE the game.
First item to change is how quickly they respawn they should be cleared for a decent amount of time or until you are far away.
Second, varied missions that really encourage you to use different loadouts. I found three weapons with which I could take on any mission. A few more types of mission shouldn't be too hard. Give us something to transport across the map while being pursued or something. The jungle is fantastic, but maybe some slightly different environments once in a while.
Third, the console version needs a better saving/checkpoint system. I'm not sure how well I'd deal with the game w/o my Quick Save.
Fourth, improve enemy AI (can always be better). More variety in enemy. Have some "Badass" enemies like other buff'd mercs.
Just a few "quick" ideas. Sorry to go on and on and on. There's an article that really mirrors my own experience and opinion here: http://majorslack.com/pc-games-strategy/having-fun-playing-far-cry-2/

Malaria: Dumb. Let me run ALL THE TIME. If you need to have a sprint, make the run speed the new walk speed, and make sprint a stamina based movement or some crap.

Stealth: Why the hell can an enemy see me while I'm hiding behind a tree, in long grass, at night, 800 meters away?

Respawn: Longer than 20 seconds would be nice.

Vehicles Made of Wet Paper: Got shot twice, SPLODED. Nice :/

More Colours: Yellow gets boring after 40 hours.

Probably other stuff. I dunno, I gave up after a few missions. Way too slooooow and clunky to move about, and having enemies see me with their super fucking laser vision when on my screen they were 2 pixels tall was RETARDED.

The game just felt clunky... clunky animations, clunky gun combat, annoying respawns, annoying mission structure, annoying travel mechanic... it all just felt sort of rushed and cumbersome, like the developers made an awesome engine and then realized late in the game they needed a game too.

Clunky.

It doesn't help I find it impossible to maintain a solid framerate on the game, which is odd for a computer with my specs.

It is an awesome engine though. I hope this time they put more effort into gameplay and amaze us, it would make me very happy.

As it stands though, Crysis is the far superior "opene enviornment shooter" at the moment.

Here's what they can do to fix the next Far Cry Game:

1) Give it a story that's worth a damn
2) Put actual CHARACTERS in it, not NPCs who just give out missions while breathlessly talking
3) Actually make the game non-linear and have your choices mean something other than "kill A or kill B".
4) Make the environment interesting.
5) Give the towns some character
6) Actually make a game with some soul in it, not just a sandbox where you shoot people in the face over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
7) No more of that "It's a secret mission mate so our guys will shoot at you too!" nonsense.

If they do that then Far Cry 3 might be worth something to me.

being a sniper was pointless in the game, as once you fire from atop a mountain, behind bushes, the enemies immediately spot you and shoot with amazing accuracy of their sub-machine guns. than of course there is suddenly a kamikaze jeep appeared behind you coming from the last checkpoint you cleared 5 minutes ago.

also dont do stupid multiplayer. wtf made the decision to let the host boot players during a match!? it was ABUSED CRAZY. just do matchmaking. i dont give a shit about pc gamer crybabies and their ways. oh and when you see multiplayer stats that show everyone getting kills with one weapon (grenade launcher)than fix it.

I really wanted to like FC2. Too bad their was zero stealth or sniping options really despite giving you lots of silenced guns and scopped guns. Even the DLC gun pack (which I bought when it was on sale) and its awesome silenced shotgun that looked cool but seemed to alert enemies as much as a clip of AK-47 fire.

Respawning checkpoints really ruined immersion for me. I mean, I kill like 20 guys infiltrating this building, drive back 3 minutes later, and there they are again?

Maybe it was my playstyle. I really wanted to use finesse and stealth options since the game was billed as a "however you want to play it" kind of thing. But in reality, the game seemed to only reward very direct aggressive attacks with heavy weapons. Get the biggest machine gun you can, a rocket launcher, and a pile of grenades. Meh. I wanted to stalk around the bush with a machete and silenced pistol!

I agree completely, & it's bloody annoying. I didn't see any infrared or nightvision goggles on the enemy, but they had they all had the eyesight of an eagle. To be fair, this happens on quite a few games, but it was a lot more noticable on FarCry2, especially with those blooming checkpoints.

I kept thinking that I should like this game, but in the end I just kept looking at the %age complete, & played it to the end just so I could trade it in for something better.

Oh, & the ending was weak.
Oh, & the driving was weak.
Oh, & the map was weak.

I get why people like it, but I just don't.

Hopefully FC3 will be a less yellow & brown, & less repetitive game

Far Cry 2 was a beautiful looking game.
Beyond that, there was nothing exceptional about it, and anyone who disagrees doesn't know shit about games.

Aside from fire (which was ace), gun jamming and vehicle maintenance were about the only 2 mechanics FC2 brought to mainstream gaming, and they weren't great. The world was so damn barren and lacking in design that map traversal was never fun, even for a moment. Enemy respawn and AI was atrocious. Diamond hunting was a bunch of bullshit, as was the plot. Stealth was completely broken, and the health system was silly (how many times can I break my arm in the same place with no consequence?).

I think Far Cry needs to shit or get off the pot. That is, it needs to fully embrace realism like STALKER did, or else go back to being a more linear arcade shoter with feral abilities and such.

And for fuck's sake, don't make me have to keep traversing the same damn empty landscape trying to outrun respawining enemies in a vehicle which is somehow magically never as fast as theirs (even though it's identical), to do missions which never vary from one to the next and ultimately don't change the game one iota from beginining to end.
I fail to see how Assassin's Creed got shit on so bad for being repetitive when FC2 is the absolute definition of the word. At least AC was fun. This is just a sandbox with a bunch of cunts who talk too fast.

I enjoyed the game, it was a solid first person shooter, but it was not without it's flaws. Which were many.

1. Fix the enemy AI in two ways. First, fix the stealth engine so that the camo actually does something, dont make the enemies unbelievably smart and super accurate, make them a bit less perceptive. Second, make it so that not everyone outside of the towns wants to kill you. Have some be friendly, and some be aggressive. Dont make me have to fight every 30 seconds of driving because of annoying enemy respawns, vehicles and checkpoints

2. This brignts me to 2, please get rid of the checkpoints, yes, I know they were there for restocking and shit, but they were mostly a bump on the road to annoyance.

3. Bus station NEXT TO the bar, that was just a pain in the ass

4. As others have said, Fix the enemy damage. It was a pain to down some people.

5. Side missions, there has to be other ways of getting guns, you had an airstrip, have us assault it for unlocking guns, there were lakes, bring guns in by boats. The convoys system was weak

6. More buddies, more allies. Make the world feel more alive, not just people talking in rooms, but also people out there fighting. It was a bit lazy to put two factions there and not have them fight. It seemed more like one faction with you as the only enemy. If it is going to be set in a warzone, how about you not only send us on missions where we are the only one. It was fine for a mission or two, but not the whole game. Also, the buddy system was great, but give us some more mercs, and that twist in the end at the helicopter crash site? Yeah, that was awful in terms of story, and downright unfair to us as a player who enjoyed the buddies.

7. Vehicles, more of them, and allow us to use a sidearm while driving. I actually didnt mind the vehicle damage system as much, but I can see how some did. Give us some more cars with some oomph, not just shitty trucks, shitty cars and for some reason new goddamn jeeps. And how about driving missions where you drive and someone else shoots, or rail shooter missions. I'd be OK with that and I was actually surprised there werent any in game.

8. Might be tough, but add the possiblity of a fully integrated co op story, so we can do missions, even if theyre just side missions, with a buddy, maybe make these the drive/shoot missions. Or just have a persistant online co-op world for up to three or four different mercs. If done right, think of how amazing that could be.

I know it sounds like I didnt like Far Cry 2, but if they fix these things (especially the Stealth system), you could have a hell of a game. I really liked 2 and thought it amazing potential, but despite these flaws was still fun as hell and one of the most solid shooters of a year full of shooters. For more suggestions Ubisoft, PM me and hire me and I will write and design you a new Far Cry game :P

I loved it, loved it, loved it. It's a game that has a very special place, in that there aren't very many games around like it. It was beautiful, but some variety would be nice.

You know what bugged me? It's a stupid thing, but the damage modelling on the characters was poor, and a regression from the original Farcry. It wouldn't be too hard to leave some decals on the bodies (the game was an 18/M+), and in a game like Farcry2 which strives for realism, having this 'just stepped out of the shower look' to the various corpses that were strewn about after a successful raid or whatever, really pulled me out of the Zone.

I'm excited about the prospect of FC3. That said, FC2's redeeming features are few and far between. Eye-spanking visuals. Nice weapons+customisation. I count two then.

FC2 was a fucking sterile, wholly unsatisfying romp through a landscape void of character.
Granted, the graphics were impressive enough to keep me coming back, but on each visit my hopes of discovering something beneath the pretty surface were dashed. I found nothing more than a bloated world [that might as well be the size of an entire fucking world] severely lacking individuality.

In FC3 I'd kill for a smaller map with the sort of ghost village locations that GTA:SA allowed us to stumble upon. I appreciate that GTA's map was huge, but that isn't the point. It was positively crammed with interesting locations. I don't care if its a sodding elephant graveyard or just a massive weird tree, something UNIQUE would actually give me reason to enjoy and explore the environments. Let it be know that randomly placed briefcases are not a suitable alternative.

It'd also be nice if every mission wasn't handed to you with a clumsy 'oh, everyone in the world is going to shoot at you btw, because... er.. you're our little secret'. Are you kidding me? Who wrote this gash?

Hmm.. Perhaps a redeeming feature that I overlooked comes by grace of the voice talent who, generously, deliver their lines with such fucking haste that I don't have to listen to their samey drivel for more than 3 seconds at a pop.

I say they drop the whole sandbox idea and take the focus back to what the original PC version offered: individual and unique levels that are self- contained sandboxes that would allow for a lot more variety throughout the game, take away the need for sensless and boring travelling and remove the terrible 'checkpoints' with respawning enemies that you had to fight through 50,000 times throughout the course of the game.

Give me different (slightly smaller) sandbox levels throughout the course of the game for some variety, take away the need to drive for 10 minutes in order to get a mission, and fix the aiming/shooting mechanics and maybe Ubi can come close to what Crytec originally offered...as it stands FC2 was bloated, boring and annoying.

I really liked this game, but I'm mostly with Arctic Fox and ChaosTeaCup on suggestions.

Enemy damage modeling, hit animations could be a lot more satisfying and if I head shot somebody they should go down every time.

I wouldn't do away with the checkpoints altogether as they provide the only non-mission fighting in the game, but respawn time could be tweaked and also I would like to see a more random number of enemies at any given checkpoint or safehouse. It would be cool to roll up and not know if you were going to go against 2 guys or 20.

The realism of traveling from point to point was great, but it did get to be a chore. Some kind of auto travel feature could be worked in.

Still, if they're basing the sequel off FC2 you can count me in. Ubisoft is good about creating awesome concepts the first time around and then fixing everything people bitched about in the next iteration. I'm looking at you Assassin's Creed.

Weren't the checkpoints the point? Without them you have a driving game
with bad driving physics.

The checkpoints made it fun to go from
one point to another on a map, figuring out the best way to go, and how to fight/sneak past each point. Granted sneaking was impossible but I did have a lot of luck sniping.

In my opinion the game was pretty boring. By not giving interesting leads or main missions, you keep pretty much doing the same thing: driving to a location (after eliminating 10 guards posts along the way) and killing whatever there is to kill there. The firefights weren't much excting, though the guns and vehicles are rather nice and the landscape is beautiful. If you think Assassin's Creed was boring, you're probably gonna hate this one too.

So, I really hope they focus on this: making the game interesting. Make primary missions that feels diferrent than the side missions, a good storyline, do something to make the firefightings more interesting, like allies or even destructable buildings.

If you kill people at a checkpoint, they should stay dead...at least for a little while. I don't like killing everyone, driving around a bend, turning around and going back and having to kill everybody all over again.

Also, the malaria thing sucked and was pointless.

The side missions were repetitive.

Good story. Good voice acting. Beautiful to look at. And it ran almost flawlessly on my system, which is OK, not great.

I really liked playing it. Looking forward to 3.

Far Cry 2 was pretty great in the gameplay. Just needs more variety in the bad guys, better AI and more of a story.
But even then, story was good enough since this was closer to Borderlands in as far as the gameplay is the real star, it's not a story driven setting.
And AI was never horrible, just semi-retarded half the time. But it's better than average and I'd buy, while maybe renting first just in case, a sequel.

I'm with the group that likes Far Cry 2 and knows only too well about its faults. People who comment on here have brought a few good issues to sort out;

- If there is to be any respawning, at least let enemies respawn the next day/24 hours from when the checkpoint or route was cleaned out.

- Shooting from cars.

- Improve the stealth. Faultymoose is right, you get spotted a little too easily.

- Make the buddy-system a little more meaningful than improving the rep to get items for your safe house. I loved the idea of a buddy that helps you, but I can't help but feel the system needed much more put into it.
