Concept art from EA's canceled Road Rash and... Oliver Twist? photo

By all accounts, it appears that Electronic Arts had intended to bring the Road Rash franchise back from the dead. Whether or not that's still in the cards is unclear, the only true evidence we've seen so far a proof of concept video that leaked to YouTube.

Freelance illustrator Ross Dearsley has now revealed (via superannuation) a slew of character concepts for this next-gen Road Rash sequel. It doesn't show much outside of the style EA was potentially aiming for, which apparently included samurai swords. Yes... samurai swords.

Perhaps more interesting are the concept sketches Dearsley shows off for another Electronic Arts title that may never see the light of day... Oliver Twist. Yes, the Charles Dickens novel. The art shows off images of both a young and teenage Twist, as well as the villainous and sinister Fagin. One particular image shows a young Twist perched upon a rooftop, overlooking the London skyline, perhaps hinting at Assassin's Creed-like environment navigation.

We won't be posting any of the art here, but you can check it out over at Dearsley's blog, where you can also find art from another potentially canned EA title, Gun Head.

When i read Gunhead, I was thinking one of those Japanese manga.

In any case, if Oliver Twist is anything like Dante's Inferno then No Thank you, EA.

i know that they ravaged dantes inferno and some people are pissed off at that. But how could they possibly turn oliver twst into a game, how would that work. Would it be like a sandbox game set in a smokey victorian london where you have to complete mini games involving sweeping chimneys and pick pocketing people. Hmmm wait i guess it could work....

Assassin's Creed 3 looks like it will be as disappointing as 2, then?

I'd like to meet the genius who thought Oliver Twist would be a good game. Seriously, EA. For a brief, shining moment, you were cool. Sure Dead Space was derivative but it was cool, and Mirror's Edge was cool, and then you decided that, rather than be cool, you'd make games about famous books that didn't have copyrights anymore because you fired the creative part of your staff or something.

Though Gunhead. It could bring the lols.

EA needs more road rash. If Outrun Online has shown us anything, it's that big long roads are still fun.

I liked the concept art for Oliver Twist. And for the whole Dante's Inferno thing, they HAD to take liberties--you're making a GAME out of it, not a MOVIE. Liberties have to be taken for the sake of interactivity and making a storyline that drives the game. (The demo and the developer diaries caught my attention for that game, and it's gotten my FPS-fanatic friend interested in it. LocoRoco and Brutal Legend have had the same effect on him as well. XD)

Gun Head looks tight. EA should get these projects going after they make money off of Dante's Inferno, Dead Space 2, and Bad Company 2.

Interactivity doesn't mean it has to be a derivative Devil May Cry clone that bares only the most tenuous relationship with its source material. I'd actually be interested to see Dante's Inferno and Oliver Twist adapted into games, but not if they are just going to be used as careless backdrops for cloned games.

Would Oliver Twist have involved battling your way through the 9 circles of poverty to rescue your large breasted girlfriend?
