Comparison shots illustrate Rockstar's dedication to accuracy in GTA IV photo

I know what you’re thinking — “Goldarnit, another blasted GTA IV comparison post?!” (And if you are thinking that, well, the 1920s called; they want their mild oaths back.) But I’m happy to report that this post has nothing to do with differences in how GTA IV looks or runs on the PS3 and 360. Instead, it’s about Flickr user Matthew Johnston, who has done a bang-up job (there we go again with the anachronisms) on a set of comparison shots featuring photos of real locations in New York City alongside images from GTA IV.

The Flickr album, entitled “Sightseeing in Liberty City”, features 29 images. There’s also a simple cover with the following text: “Liberty City vs New York City: A photoset showing the similarities between Grand Theft Auto 4 and real life.” If you can’t tell, the image above features New York’s Manhattan Bridge on the left, and its digital doppelgänger, the Algonquin Bridge, on the right.

Johnston explains that he took the original photos of New York about two years ago, and simply took pictures of his TV while playing GTA IV to match the photos. And the side-by-side shots show just how impressive Rockstar’s reincarnation of the Big Apple in GTA IV really is. In particular, check out the picture of the Hearst Tower and the striking wide-angle shot of the Statue of Liberty/Happiness with Lower Manhattan/Algonquin in the background (it even includes fog in both instances!).

You might do a double take or two — that’s how accurate some of them are. The resemblance between Liberty City and New York is uncanny in many of these images, and it really illustrates the tremendous effort that Rockstar put into researching this game. As a New Yorker, I think this is especially cool — in fact, I might even go as far as to say that it’s the bee’s knees. Wouldn’t you?

Is this really that impressive? PGR4 did a better job of most of the downtown stuff and gave a better "feeling" of Brooklyn many months before.

Yeh but PGR4 wasn't fully explore-able. Im pretty sure most games that involve racing round a specified track will excel compared to a free roaming game.

I don't know why game developers can't do anything original anymore. All they do is copy.

The only thing that isn't really close to lifelike in GTA IV is Steinway street. The opposite sidewalk of Jr. Rays (Dr. Jays) and Jizzy Jazz (Jimmy Jazz) is an empty sidewalk, wherein there's a block filled with stores. The Hudson River strip, the Triboro Bridge, Astoria Pool and even the big ass building across the street from the pool are all in it. The Steinway Beer Garden looks true to life to the Beer Garden, it's one of my favorite places to go in real life, the only real difference is that there are picnic tables instead of round tables.

I know Dukes (Queens) like the back of my hand, it's my home, and Dukes comes pretty damn close.

I saw this yesterday and was amazed. I can't wait until I actually go to New York. It should be a mind trip walking around a place where I once blew people away in :).

As impressive as the city is and the game itself I can't help but *sigh* and think if only they spent just a fraction of their time on in game content like unlockables and actually rewarding the player for doing side missions besides worthless online achievements.

Has anyone seen this video comparison? Maybe it's me, but things do look kinda sparse. I guess because it's at night or something. See for yourself!

never let any one say that their anal retentiveness to detail hurt this game. Impressively great.

I saw this in Digg yesterday myself. Almost C-Blogged it bwaha :)

If you've read a lot of the articles that go in-depth into how the UK and NYC Rockstar team traipsed through NYC, Brooklyn and even made it out to Jersey you'd expect no less than the level of detail and realism they've brought us.

Heck 5 months ago when screenshots were just surfacing my brother was remarking how close the architecture was in the Hoboken sections.
