Commence frowning, HD DVD owners: Warner Bros. to support Blu-ray exclusively photo

You read that headline correctly; Warner Bros. has announced today that it's going to side with Blu-ray exclusively and drop all support for HD DVD. However, we will continue seeing HD DVD releases from Warner until May of this year.

"The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers," Warner Bros Chairman and Chief Executive Barry Meyer said in a statement.

Quite a shocking development in the ongoing format war if I do say so myself. The recent rumors about a new Xbox 360 with a built in HD DVD drive only make this whole situation even stickier.

For those of you who have invested in either format, how does this news affect you? As someone with an HD DVD player, it's pretty unsettling, as Warner Brothers has some highly anticipated movies coming out later this year (The Dark Knight anyone?).

The way I see it, this announcement is all the more reason to get a PlayStation 3 sooner than later. What do y'all have to say on the matter?

I'm pretty surprised because I neither believe that Blu-ray nor HD DVD are the future.

Would be interesting to know more about the background deals between Sony and Warner?

You really have no choice. Blu-Ray is taking over like it or not. Less and less new movies will be coming out on DVD. Even the ads for new DVDs end by saying - "Available on Blu-Ray!" Nobody wants ancient DVD garbage! Don't worry either. You don't have to start your collection again, as Blu-Ray players play that old crappy DVD format as well. That fuzzy looking piece a shit. Blu-Ray is so sharp! Ever see those comparisons where they split the screen. DVD on one side, Blu-Ray on the other. No contest. DVD looks pathetic. It's so late 90's

Damn, I just got the 360 hd-dvd player... it bums me out to think it won't play the dark knight, I absolutely loved Batman Begins, it was the first movie that I bought.

It doesn't matter, ten years from now HD-DVD will return, but as a codec to steal movies online and get revenge...oh like Divx hehe.

"Dident they also have Dvd's vs. Digital Lazer discs."

The former came out in 1996. The latter was introduced in 1979, so there was not such format war.

Shame that HD DVD isn't winning this, I liked the idea of no region locks. Apart from that, they are basically the same.

That's because people are poor. If they had the choice, they would take a HDTV.

I feel that blu-ray should win this one, mainly because nowadays larger means better, I want to be able to put lots of stuff in a blu-ray.

No hd-dvd´s or blu-ray´s here in Latin America yet, so my HDTV is not beign used at its best. Over here Blockbuster is going to be the decisive source for HD content, and Blockbuster is going to stick to blu-ray.

The bulk of my movie purchases are still on DVD; however, there comes that special time when Blu-Ray is my format of choice.

28 weeks later, Planet earth, phantom of the opera and 300

lol?

I still wouldnt waste money on a ps3. And the only reason I buy movies is if I REALLY enjoyed it or the extras are totally bitchin. Ive been torrenting movie in HD and think Ill keep doing that, with a spare external hard drive.

Well, I’m happy about this because (A) I own a PS3 and like 7 things on Blu-ray, (B) I would love to have Batman Begins and The Matrix in HD, and (C) this brings us ever closer to the end of the format war, which is good for everyone.

That would be awesome, I'd buy a second 360 if it had integrated blue-ray. Then I could just plug my HD-DVD drive in the back and be set.

HD-DVD is better for me. I have both, and I prefer HD-DVD because it works, no 1.1 compliance bs, it just works. Plus, I hate Sony. I hope Sony dies in a fire along with their piece of shit machine. I am really disappointed about this news. I have a PS3, and I regret buying it. Wii60 is better for games, and DVD/HD-DVD is better for movies. I really hope HD-DVD has a comeback for this news and can pull something out.

1.1 can be had through a PS3 update...that's not too hard. And as far as Blu-ray goes it's pop and play like DVD or HD-DVD. And when directly compared how is HD-DVD better for movies over blu-ray? They both offer Hi-def? Im my eyes they are the same, except for the fact that blu-ray is the larger media device.

If you hate Sony why'd you buy a PS3?
Corak's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/04/2008 20:54

PS3 owner here, and to be honest I didn't really care what format won. Yup I own blue ray movies and an hd tv to watch them on, but I've grown so tired of this format war I could care less at this point.

And while dvd movies do look good, if none of you have seen what a blue ray or hd-dvd look like at its full capacity then you really are missing out. Its not a "ok it looks a little better" if you compare the same movie side by side with the high def version the level of detail you get with blue ray or hd-dvd is astounding, the standard dvd looks so much fuzzier.

Also standard hd sets are already obsolete. Sony has a laser tv of some sort, resolution, 1990x1080 or something like that, 90% of the color the human eye can see, supposdly a 3d type experience. But I'm waiting for a full holographic type setup, get them bullets to fly out of the screen at you.

I'm a lil upset to be honest. I have the HD-DVD add-on for my 360 (a gift last year for Christmas) and have enjoyed the movies I have gotten on the format. I recently took advantage of some of Best Buy's crazy 'buy one get one free" (and similar) deals to expand my collection. I can't usually justify $30 for a movie in HD even though it looks far superior (anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves... "just fine" doesn't cut it in my opinion) but when I can spend an extra couple bucks to upgrade the disc to HD, I'm all for it.

This pisses me off. But whatever. Just looks like I'll buy the cheaper Dark Knight disc and Warner will make less money off of me. Their loss. Dark Knight would be one movie I would DEFINITELY justify paying $30 for. I mean, otherwise, Batman would kick my ass.

PS - Fuck digital download. Until the US expands their broadband capabilities it will never become standard. There will always be physical media until then. That time is years off. The entire backbone of our computer networks would need to be replaced. You're all kidding yourselves on that one, too.

I was going to end up owning both eventually, anyway, but I have to say my blu-ray experince was less than spectacular. I had a PS3 with an HDMI connection to a Sony Grand Wega, and we did the pepsi challenge with 300 on HDDVD and Blu-Ray. Everyone who saw it agreed the HDDVD was clearly better. If the quality is the same, then I don't care. If all BR vs. HDDVD is going to be like 300 was during our trials, then I'm disappointed.

Still getting a PS3, though.
