There is a lot going on in the above dev diary for the upcoming Command & Conquer 4. The short video takes you through most of the new changes in the game and talks about what they were trying to do this time around with the franchise. I find the class structure interesting and possibly a good way to gain replayability, but I'm not sold on it really being an actual change to the game.
What I am sold on is EA's devotion to live action actors. It is now years past using live-action cutscences was in vogue and yet here we are getting C&C 4 with full live action cutscenes. If someone hasn't already started a slow clap over this, it needs to happen now. I shall wait for the thundering applause. Sadly, this is the end of this storyline, and with Red Alert also wrapping up it may well be the end of live-action cutscenes in games as we know it. We can hold out hope that the next game in the franchise stays so ridiculously true to its roots, but the sad truth is is that it is not likely.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Too bad about the gameplay though. Why they keep changing C&C's gameplay from what once worked well enough, I don't know. Starcraft 2 can't come fast enough.
The only difference is a class system? Sorry guys, COH had that shit years ago.
I hear there's little base building in this one - that could be a massive problem for me as I'm a turtler extordinaire, I just love to build a highly defended base, build up a massive army and head in for a big co-ordinated attack.
Been playing Generals at the minute and loving the Terrorists, they're possibly my favourite C&C faction evar.
"release the SCUD"
Who asked for one of the main RTS genre franchizes to go from being an RTS into some wierd domination-gameplay class-wannabe-rpg-look-at-modern-warfare-they-managed-it-so-can-we piece of junk?
Who EA? Who. Tell me. I'm your potential customer, friggin tell me WHO asked for that?
Nobody. Thats who. Nobody.
We played the C&C and Red Alert games because we loved them, as rts games.
We didnt play them because "oh it would be cool if we remove all these buildings and strategies, and add some preset classes instead".
No EA, nobody did that.
If Starcraft 2 fucks up, the RTS genre is as good as dead (with very few exceptions such as Supreme Commander and, well, i cant think of any other RTS these days)
Its a sad day to be an RTS fan.
sort of, after all, what did you expect? a 15 years old franchise have just been destroyed
its a shame really, i'll pirate this game, play the campaing, some co-op campaing and unistall it forever
I have been playing C&C since the beginning and have always liked the story. *spoilers* Seeing Kane at the end of the Soviet campaign in Red Alert was a crowning moment of awesome for the franchise; it bridged this timeline gap and really showed how far this lore/alternate timeline story could go.
Even with that said, however, I cannot stand to look at that gameplay. C&C3 was terrible. Any more games even similar to that are not on my list of purchases for the foreseeable decade.
And i quite like the RTT - the fact people are still calling it an RTS is rather the reason people are not happy... ITS NOT AN RTS - ITS AN RTT
