Coming to America: Square Enix looking for US partnerships photo

First Capcom, now Square Enix. This generation is seeing some big westard steps taken by Japanese publishers eager to lap up some of the creamy monetary goodness waiting on the other side of the globe. Its not a surprising situation, all things considered. With the Xbox 360 devouring wallets everywhere except Japan, there's a veritable dairy farm over in the west just waiting for the plundering, and by staying focussed on home, Nippon companies are only ever going to miss out.

In the case of Squenix, it's also a matter of content. Speaking to The Financial Times' Web site, Senior VP Michihiro Sasaki explained that in order to maximize profits, the company needs to branch out from its core product-types and start publishing more traditionally western-ccentric games.

We need to seek co-operation with a US publisher - we need local content. Our strength is in role-playing games and fantasy titles, so it is a bit difficult to appeal to the US market.

While that statement is probably inciting groans from those of you who remember when Square turned the SNES sequel to Front Mission into a platform shooter, at the moment it seems the company's intention is to aquire western content rather than to fill Final Fantasy XIII with equipable baseball caps, life-restoring phoenix burgers, or any other anti-American clichees you might care to hazard. The company's current internationally-focussed effort The Last Remnant is actually looking pretty damn spiffy too, and anything that gives the company more cash to spend on projects like that has to be a good thing.

Hey, hey, hey. Gun Hazard is probably one the best mech games I've ever played. Let's not say things we can't take back!

That's good to hear. I bet EA's ears might have pricked up to that news, as EA had a previous alliance with Square back on the PS1. Could a reunion be on the cards or will Sqaure look elsewhere.

I've always thought it quite risky for Square to stick to rpgs all the time. I think perhaps they should look at making a Front Mission action game, in a Lost Planet like vein, it has so much unexplored potential. Technology is on theirreally their side now that their imagination is the only limit.

What else? I'd like to see Parasite Eve and Vagrant Story get more exposure while FF gets scaled back a bit. Break from the rpg shell a bit, learn from others and grow. EA or whoever will surely support you.

Gawd, it's about time. I was just wonderin' when they would finally run the Final Fantasy bit dry. The fact that about 50% of those games are good doesn't change anything. Kingdom A is having Problem A which Heroes A, B, C, D decide to fight for very little reason in particular.

I didn't really enjoy KH or KH2 too much, but their exploration into online is something that I would like to see expounded upon.

Now all they have to do is find a publisher/developer who's wearing one of those "Looking For A Japanese Girlfriend" t-shirts and they're in business!

You know what? I'd love to so Square hook up with Bioware. Between them they could make some truly awesome games. Bioware know what we like, Square have the cool catalogue just waiting to be exploited and both are greatly talented.

Hey if they put baseball caps and burgers in FFXIII Earthbound fans might buy it. The stupid bastards at Nintendo disowned us a long time ago so we'll take whatever we can get.
