So I must say that I'm digging what I've seen of Sony Online Entertainment's DC Universe Online. This is coming from someone who does not really play massively multiplayer online games, having only dipped my toes in the waters of Azeroth.
We had a chance to see the game in action at CES a few weeks back, and on the surface, it looks to be shaping up pretty nicely. Well, at least it looks better than this trailer, which doesn't really do the game's visuals any justice. But then there's all of that comic book fanboy service in the trailer, flashing pages of the amazing Batman story arc "Hush" and name dropping Jim Lee, the game's Executive Creative Director.
DC Universe Online is coming to the PC and the PlayStation 3 sometime this year, with plans for cross-platform play. This makes the game even more appealing to me -- play seems designed and adapted for the PS3 controller, with actions mapped to the pad's buttons in a workable fashion. It'll be possible to use a mouse and keyboard or the Dual Shock 3/SIXAXIS, whether you're playing on the PC or the PS3. In the demo we were shown, the player switched between the controller and the keyboard/mouse setup on the fly, and the in-game icons changed accordingly with no manual settings changes. Very cool.
We'll have more of DC Universe Online from New York City Comic Con, which runs from February 13-15.
I've probably said it here before, but the DC universe, to me, never really lent itself to having a glut of random superheroes that aren't part of the Justice League.
Marvel, by contrast, is sickeningly RIPE for a "plausible" Massive overflow of costumed heroes.
I'm interested to see how it does, but I'm way more interested in Champions at the moment
I don't think it's nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be, I don't think the fluid motion will be a difficult fix as it has still another year in development. The screenshots if from the PS3 are in fact an amazing level of graphics for an MMO especially on a console. Take Cryptic Studios benchmark graphics as a comparison and you can see CS set the bar low. To point out CS set its bench according to the Xbox360. I'm not trying to start a flame war but you can see a clear difference in the limitations.
Like I said, I don't think this video does it justice, really. The game looks much better running when you see it in person. Anyone plan on hitting up NY Comic Con? I'll be there, and we can all check it out together.
You know that me and the a lot of Dtoid NY members will be there. I am looking forward to playing this and a ton of the other titles that will be playable at the show.
New York Comicon takes place the 6-8, I'm definately going to the panel.
I'm also curious why the videos keeps saying that Jim Lee is doing the art and has no mention of Geoff Johns writing it, Geoff Johns is one of the best comic book writers around.
And Tubatic, do you actively read DC? There's thousands of superheroes that aren't a part of the Justice League. Hell, the Green Lantern Corps. alone has over 7200 members. And that is combined with that fact that there's actually going to be a comic book arc in the DC Universe that explains this massive influx of superheroes from the game.
Anyway, I'm pretty pumped for this game. The only downside for me is that you can't be A Green Lantern/Yellow Lantern. You can be like a Lantern, but not really BE a Lantern.
I look forward to being a Speedster and hopefully something akin to the Shazam! family.
I think that's fine. Otherwise only one lucky person could be Superman or The Flash and pwn everyone else.
Not to mention this game is essentially going to be canon alongside the DC Universe. So people being allowed to play as the characters wouldn't be fair for the writers or the story of the game.
