Comic-Con 08: Play Spore forever and never see everything photo

At Comic-Con this week, co-founder of Maxis and The Sims creator Will Wright revealed a bit about Spore's depth during a large demo of the game. According to Eurogamer, Wright claimed that players would never see the entirety of the game, regardless of how long they play. Considering the nature of the title, Wright may be correct in that regard.

He then went on to debut “MashOn,” which is a tool inside of Spore that will allow players to create their own comic books with both digital images and videos. The idea according to Wright is that videogames should be “tools of self-expression.” The showing of MashOn only punctuated his point earlier during the demo, in which he stated that most games will put you in the shoes of “a Luke Skywalker or Frodo Baggins” but Spore will allows players to be “in the role of Lucas or Tolkien.”

Honestly, as time goes by, I’ve become less and less enthused about what Spore will bring to the table. Sure, creating phallic monsters is an awesome pastime and enjoyable to boot, but how long will you have to play to really get the full experience of the game? Regardless, it looks as though Wright is certainly excited about his product. How about you guys?

I think Spore will be amazing. I just wish it wasn't revealed 5 years ago because the magic of Spore is certainly wearing off as it nears its release date.

I can't wait to put Ikea furniture in my planet, dress the creatures with H&M clothing and help them become pop stars.

By contrast, the more I hear about it, the more excited I am to see how thoroughly he's expanded the concept of what players can do and get out of a game. Obviously, it's not everyone's cup of tea, but you can't please everyone.

Also, "seeing every piece of content" is a far cry from "fully experiencing the game," so I'm not even a little worried about that.

I think it will do Maxis rather good to be under-the-radar regrading Spore updates until it's launch within the next few months.

If they keep on spitting out "Oh hey, Spore's a pretty cool game, heres more footage" constantly, I think the Spore "craze" will die off and we might find ourselves going "Hey, I remember seeing this in the video's" and getting bored of it quicker.

After all, Spore fans are currently 38% of God :D

I guess I still just don't "get it" yet. This much coverage and I still don't know how the game works. It's a creature based simlife or something? I haven't heard of any objectives other than "do what you want and watch yourself evolve"

It still looks like a 21st century version of "evo."

Not that that's bad, but everyone makes it sound like Spore is this totally unique game. The scale may be unique, but the game itself isn't.

I'm sort of on the fence about what I think about it. On the one hand, I love the customization and creativity. On the other, I worry it will have so little in the way of objectives you sort of just, float around and then the game ends.

I still think I'll get bored really fast, with going through the same Era's/Ages of your creature over and over again. Just because the creature looks different, doesn't really make me want to play through the whole thing again if it's basically the same. Then again, we still play SimCity and Civ over and over again and those games are pretty much follow the same structure everytime you play them.

To be honest I wish they made it a bit more freeform. So far it looks like you'll only be able to make terrestrial carbon-based animals with spines. Still I'm sure it'll be awesome.

sSpore is one of the most creative games of all times. i never expect to have an idea similar to tamagotchi at this level.

My only hope is see how much the replay value will be

I think the titles Wright makes tend to have a different definition of "winning". Is finishing the game really just about getting to the Galactic exploration stage? With titles like the Sims, there really isn't a way to win determined by the game: You create your characters, build their houses/neighborhoods, and play it how you want: Advancing their skills/career, raising several generations of families, finding inventive ways to kill your characters, watching the soap opera of virtual relationships, or just putting it into cheat mode and making comics/machinima out of it.

The full experience of the game is whatever the individual user determines it to be. That's what I find most brilliant about Will Wright's games.

I think people are wrong in expecting this to be a finite game which is 'completable' or one that even has an ending. Its more like Elite and Frontier type games in that it gives you a massive world to explore and things to do (and in the case of Spore things to create). Like Little-Big-Planet its as much creation tool as it is 'game' - Its going to be a true 'sandbox' title that literally lets you play with it and explore/make/do what you like.
I am looking forward to Spore (hopefully without the draconian DRM).

I only got as far as "mildly interested" in this game. Now I'm like just get it over with.
