Comic-Con 08: Old Achievements earning bonuses in Gears of War 2 photo

During the Gears of War 2 presentation at Comic-Con, Cliff Bleszinski unveiled an interesting and new twist for Achievements. Apparently, Gears of War 2 will feature “linked Achievements,” which depending on what you accomplished in the original Gears of War, will unlock playable characters in the upcoming sequel. Kotaku was present when Cliff announced the new system and jotted down a list of his examples.

  • Complete ‘Act One’ in Gears Of War, unlock a playable Anthony Carmine in Gears of War 2
  • Find 10 COG tags in Gears Of War, unlock Minh Young Kim in Gears of War 2
  • Kill Raam in Gears Of War, unlock a playable Raam in Gears of War 2
In addition to the Achievements announcement, journalists were also told that Steve Jablonsky was at the helm for the soundtrack of Gears of War 2, and is nearly finished with his work. Jablonsky is the man responsible for the Command & Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath soundtrack, as well as films like The Island and Transformers. While I don’t mind Jablonsky’s work, I’m more excited about the retroactive Achievement bonuses. It gives me a reason rekindle my chainsaw lust. Anyone up for some co-op?

While I appreciate anything that makes achievements less pointless, as someone who didn't own the original it is annoying that they couldn't make these normal unlockables. Still, I suppose the characters won't have any significance to me anyway. I'm just nit-picking due to my completist nature.

Face, why would you be getting the sequel without the original, anyways? It's only 25 bucks on Amazon. Just use a free games site or something.

Also: this is awesome. Though I hope they make use of harder achievements than these. Beating the game once shouldn't unlock you everything.

I hope they make use of Seriously. That's the only one of the original 1000 gamerscore achievements I've yet to obtain. It'll motivate me to go back to it.

People with the Gears 1 achievements will probably be awarded the characters as soon as they play the game but I'd imagine the people playing for the first time will have to unlock the characters through the Gears 2 achievements. It would make sense.

It's a nice bonus, I suppose, and I'd like to see more sequels do stuff like this. I know some DS games gave bonuses if you put their prior GBA game into the slot when you booted it up.

Finally, some use for the achievements. Don't me wrong, I like the achievement system, gives me something to do the with game other than stashing it or play it online for a week or two.

Dude, if you're serious about playing online, I've actually been wanting to play some Gears co-op for a while. My GT is Adversarius. Let me know if you want to play.

This is pretty cool. I like the idea.

Why... whay link it to the last game??? its kind of stupid either they are just trying to fuck you or they want you to get the old game if you don't already have it.

I wonder what other examples they might have, this implies that more Gears 1 achievements are connected to GoW2.

I have 52 in GoW, everything but the annex stuff, hope I'm covered.

That's kinda cool. I hope there's nothing for the super hard achievements like 10,000 kills or whatever the one was.

Nice to see devs using them more creatively.

I don't have a problem with it; it's actually really cool. Of course a few people are complaining, but developers and game companies should reward those who play their games by offering things like this to loyal gamers.

I think it's a great idea. One complaint; for the first 3 weeks after this game comes out, squeekers are going to be inceasently whining/asking, " how do you get that guy?!? how did you get that guy? , what did you have to do to get that guy?!?"
