When I saw the debut teaser for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Fusion during E3, I got pretty excited. The teaser said that we'd be able to fuse Marvel's greatest heroes powers together. As it turns out, Activision meant something completely different from what people were probably expecting.
All of the attacks shown in the trailer have nothing to do with fusion. What's really happening is "team attack". THE HULK PICKING UP WOLVERINE, SPINNING HIM AROUND AND THEN THROWING HIM IS NOT FUSION. Now the Hulk receiving Wolverine's claws (albeit pretty pointless) would be fusion.
When I think fusion, I think of Dragon Ball Z where Goku and Vegeta become one body (this is where I would link to a clip of said fusion except everything on YouTube related to DBZ is a sh*tty AMV set to Linkin Park). Hell, even the Fantastic Four 2 movie had a fusion deal at the end where the Human Torch absorbed Mr. Fantastic and The Things powers to confront Dr. Doom.
Ugh. I'm going to go fuse a knife into my eyes now.
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

Meet the rest of the team
As a Marvel fan, this trailer was exactly what I thought they would do when they're talking about fusion. I even guessed the Hulk would throw people at other people.
As big of a Cap fan as I am, I just couldn't get into the first Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. I just got bored with the game, like the LEGO games. I hope this one bring some more exciting/varied gameplay to the table.
I feel exactly the opposite about this. I was relieved when I heard it wasn't a literal fusion of powers, as it would rob the characters of their individual personalities (kinda). I don't want to see The Hulk turn invisible or any other nonsense like that because then he would no longer be The Hulk. Superheroes are pretty much defined by their powers and mixing them up would throw all kinds of fuck into that equation...
I agree with heretrix, I'd much rather have team attacks than some kind of fusion. Also, I'm pretty sure this was cleared up before E3 in GameInformer. I don't usually read game magazines, but I happened to flip through one and read about Alliance 2's fusion attacks a few weeks ago. From what it described, I might give it a try.
I can't believe people thought that "fusion" would mean two super heroes (or at least their powers) actually and literally "fusing". Thats ridiculous. But what is also ridiculous is people thinking that the team attacks is something new. Xmen legends had it and so did UA. OPTIC CLAW! LIGHTNING SMASH!
The fusion is between the powers. Not the heroes themselves. I dunno why anyone thought it would be the heroes fusing together. I think that would have been lame.
For me the let down has nothing to do with the "fusion." Rather I don't want to believe that the enemies stand perfectly still in order for you to completely execute the attack. Also, the animation quality is a bit low :\
I just read about this on GI, didn't think fusion meant anything fancier than what's in game.
But then right before I read the chart that showed some examples of the possible combination attacks, the idea of actually fusing powers came to mind. Although it would only make sense in a game where they allowed you to makes your own superhero/villian. Then I thought that would be cool feature to include, but probably not gonna happen.
This is an upgrade to the Team Attack system in place since the X-Men Legends 1 game.
Except this time instead of having 'Optic Claw +2 Dam' show up on screen when Cyclops teams up with Wolverine it seems like the 'fusion' actually creates a new effect.
Look at the trailer, it has 2 examples...
Sue Storm creates a force field, Iron Man fills it up with energy.
So we have one defensive move: The Force Field
We also have a single target damage power: The Energy Bolt.
Fuse them together, what do we get? A throwable object that explodes to create an area of effect bomb.
The other example...
Spidey ties up a few bad guys and 'roots' them into place.
Iron man zaps the webs and they become electrified.
This is a bit gimmicky, I'll agree. It's not meant to be the second coming of Christ, it's a upgrade of the previous system. It just seems that this time we will be able to create different game effects/mechanics instead of just getting a Damage increase.

A bit disappointed on the reporting of this story, the X-Men and Ultimate Alliance games have always been well made and well received critically. Nothing in these games can really qualify as UBER innovative or awesome, but the design, visuals and gameplay are solid.
I was more afraid they actually fuze the heroes into one. That'd suck. Maybe they improved team combos. Here is just look like it is a cinematic. Maybe that's it.
What the fuck is the point of hyping up a game based on fusion when it's just team attacks. Sorry, I don't want more of the same as the last game. I actually want to see the Hulk and Spiderman or whoever to fuse together for a short period of time. I still want this game, but it's not what I was expecting.
I thought they meant that as well. You know, like fusion cooking, etc. I don't know what else they would call it, but I understand why people are upset about the use of the word.
If you were hoping Wolverine and The Human Torch were going to FUUUUSEEEE TOGETHERRRRRRRR - that would have been the gayest thing of all time and everyone would have bashed it. Why can't fusion be combining powers to make more powerful attacks.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Also, can't stand AMVs with Linkin park soundtracks. I dare someone to edit a DBZ video to Sigur Ros.
I'm suprised people took it as literally fusion.

Literal fusion of heroes? Come on...

This should be no exception.
Who wrote this article? Oh, Hamza.
Par for the course, fail.
So what. As a comic fan, they had me at Marvel.
RobotFart: I love you.
I guess 'borrowing' is underwhelming?
I completely 100% agree with KGBrAm
