Comic-Con 08: Microsoft will 'explore' the Halo universe, not 'exploit' it photo

Eurogamer had a little chat with Microsoft Game Studios' Frank O'Connor at Comic-Con 08 and got some choice quotes about the direction Microsoft wants to take the Halo franchise in.

"We have a really detailed story bible, we do really have it all planned out. There are so many areas of the universe to explore, the real challenge is picking which is the most exciting area for people."

He's got a point there; how many Halo books are there nowadays? On the other hand, just because there's ample source material, that doesn't necessarily mean the world needs twenty games to fully explain it.

Frank goes on to say that "we have a well defined, carefully orchestrated, properly planned universe to explore not exploit, and that's the tricky part: what are the things people want to do?"

With 3 seperate Halo games in development, I find it hard to believe that the series won't be exploited. Then again, if the games are good enough to please the fans, you won't see me starting up an Internet petition.

You know what, I think this is a shame as I think the much joked about 'Halo Kart' could actually work given how many vehicles are in the game now.

I really think the idea that Halo or any other Microsoft property is made to be exploited is two parts Microsoft/Halo hate, and one part reality. You have the people who have a rabid, seething hate for Halo (lets face it, moreso for the wads who scream in your ear online). These people hate Halo so much they have to cheapen and villify Halo in anyway they can. What better way than to imply that Halo is going to get completely strung out by a money grubbing corporation.

But, we can look at Viva Pinata...exploited with a saturday morning cartoon show. Not explored in the least.

On the other hand, search for the Halo 3 Believe commercial campaign. Then look at the video shorts they made for the defunct movie. There is some serious art and consideration there.

It's going to be a matter of perspective and hearing what you want to hear. It's easy to say something is being cheaply exploited if that is what you WANT to see happening. And that my friend is a certifiable break with reality...

The halo games were fun but i never found the "universe" to be all that captivating.

I don't consider myself a Halo "hater", but I do believe it to the most grossly overrated game series ever made. I think MS just needs to quit now while they are still ahead and come up with a new idea.

i just don't like halo because i hate space sci-fi shooters. i'm not even buying the conduit, which does look amazing for a wii game. i think its the aliens that really turn me off. i guess i like shooting people more.

All I'm going to say is that I'm excited for a Halo game that isn't Halo 4.

I know we're not allowed to like Halo here on Destructoid without being labeled a an idiot or a college jock.

The more the merrier, until an abnoxious horribly drunk person joins in.

They certainly need to make more Halo games and cover more story and more multiplayer experiences, but they certainly should never exploit it. Remember when Lucasfilms Games exploited Star Wars with Star Wars Chess and Star Wars Racing?

Yeah. I don't want to see Halo Chess.

@AlucardX24 - Halo Chess? That actually doesn't sound horribly awful.

Because I do not fear ridicule, I will come out and say that I am a big fan of the Halo franchise. For my money, there has never been a better console multiplayer experience (except Rock Band, but that's a game you have to gather a bunch of people to truly enjoy) and the number of hours I've plugged into Halo multiplayer make it the best entertainment value I've ever seen.

That said, unless one of the new games is Halo 4: DO NOT WANT. The Halo universe is garbage. Master Chief is a shallow character, the storyline has been done 100x before, and I really don't care about the plight of the Covenant Elite. Halo is consistently a Day 1 purchase for me because I absolutely love the feel and competitiveness of the multiplayer. Instead of play a whole suite of different Halo games, give me another game with that same multiplayer feel in a universe that doesn't suck. Sometimes I feel like Bungie and Microsoft believe that if they keep telling us it's a "rich universe" we'll eventually believe it.

Star Wars has a fully developed universe as well, which is why we have literally dozens of games, movies, and books set in it. And while there are complaints that Star Wars is being exploited as well, it's nowhere near the level of dissatisfaction with more Halo games incoming.

I for one think the Halo source material is quality stuff. I've played the games and read the books, and there really is great material underneath the obvious flaws. I wouldn't mind seeing some of that mythos brought to life.

So there you have it: My name is MechaMonkey, and I like Halo.

I honestly think it is too soon for Bungie and Ensemble Studio's to start releasing new Halo games. Halo Wars will be a great game by the looks of it but releasing it just a year after Halo 3? Yeah I suppose you could get away with that but announcing two Halo games in development NOW as well is kind of ridiculous. Each Halo title needs its own breathing space before another one pops on shelves.

I am looking foward to any new Halo books or games but they seem to be trying to get as many games out as possible right now and it feels like (too early to say yet?) they are starting to exploit it

Why are you people making such retarded assumptions? He's explaing they have a plan, that doesn't mean we'll see dozens upon dozens of Halo games ala Madden.

And its so funny to see the hypocrisy of people, Nintendo can dish out as many Mario, Metroid and Zelda games it wants BUT BUNGIE BETTER NOT FUCKING MAKE A HALO 4 CAUSE ITS OLD AND OVERPLAYED AND SHIT.

And less I forgot Mario Whatever since the plumber seems to be a multitasker, from baseball to soccer, AMAZING.

But Bungie is a douche for trying to expand their universe, fuck them for wanting to make money.

Also, I LIKE HALO, Its the best multiplayer around, perfectly balanced weapons, loads of vehicles, good maps.

GUESS THAT MAKES ME A 12 YEAR OLD/FRATBOY DOUCHE.

Go play your award winning games then you elitist pricks. I'll be over here along with my friend having FUN.

@ Edge of Blade: I wouldn't call Viva Pinata "exploited", since that series was pretty much created for the sole purpose of trying to replicate the success of Pokemon. A saturday morning cartoon is a natural result.

@Kyousuke Nanbu - Whoa man, calm down. For once this thread isnt constant hate on Halo. I agree that its the best console multiplayer fps (mostly because of the vehicles, and becaise COD4 is much better on pc) EXCEPT that most of the people who play it ruin it (ironically, ditto for pc COD4 - TF2 all the way!).

Id like more games in the Halo universe. Its not perfect but after three fairly epic campaigns (not always great, but always impressive and epic in feel) ive been drawn in fairly strongly. Not to mention, the games are generally fun to play, even when the story is lacking.

I still think theyll exploit it eventually. However, not immediately making Halo 4 is a good start.
