Comic-Con 08: Could there be a 'HaloCon' in the future? photo

Recently, Eurogamer had a chance to speak with Microsoft’s community manager, Frank O’Connor after the HaloWars panel at Comic-Con. O’Connor is most notorious for his work with Bungie as the content manager, which he left in May to take up his new role at Microsoft. During the interview, O’Connor floated up the idea that Halo may just be big enough to have it’s own event, much like BlizzCon.

You can do a HaloCon. Nothing on [the scale of Comic Con], but you could bring a few hundred people just to see a Halo thing. We're really not worried about Halo's ability to stand out and shine in the future. There's plenty of stuff coming.
O’Connor then went on to try to explain the teaser pulling at E3 this year, which may have led him to think that a HaloCon could be an apt place to announce a few Bungie titles. He said that the missing announcement issue at E3 was “complicated” because “there was a ton of stuff. And someone, somewhere decided strategically that another time is better…”

Was O’Connor speaking as Microsoft community manager, or Bungie content manager when he said these things? It’s interesting to choose this wording when you work for the publisher that pulled the footage. Regardless, while a HaloCon may never happen, at least we keep getting reassured about this awesome new trailer that was missing from E3. Hopefully, whenever it is actually released, it will knock our socks off.

Halo is going to become another sonic at this rate, pimping a game will only go so far, they should hold back a little, tooo much Halo is not a good thing.

We all know what happened to Sonic, let's hope it does NOT happen to the good 'ol Chief.

Will it be overrun by frat boys and racist 12 year olds, like the online version?

Ya know, for the sake of authenticity?

Correction, any Halo is not a good thing.

Bungie/Halo has not achieved nearly the same level of respect Blizzard has. There's no way they should have there own trade show.

Negativity anyone? I wouldn't mind another con, god knows we don't have enough events to look forward to already.

I only want this if they take Halo in a new, interesting direction. Different genres, different stories, different characters. I need more variety, if they want to keep me interested in this series. I trust Bungie, but I don't know if I trust Microsoft.

Halo-Con will be the perfect venue to announce Halo Jai alai.

@Sharpless - And that's really the beauty of it. I think a Halo-Con would be awesome, as long as the overbearing mentality of selling the game just because it has "Halo" in it isn't present. I realize the idea is always to make money, but publishers really take the fun out of it.

I hope there's a HaloCon soon in the US. I've thought about trying to start one of the grassroots level. I'd like to see something sanctioned by Bungie.

I'm a fan of the Halo universe, even at it's unpopular state here in this community. As long as this doesn't turn into another Mario Kart or Sonic type of thing I'm OK with it.

Answer: No. I want Destructoid to get a convention first.

It's interesting to note that they are willing to call it HaloCon rather than BungieCon or something.

Wow, all the angry halo hating kids are out in full force today. Well it is sunday now that I think about it.

Anyway, this would be neat, it would be interesting to see what kind of stuff they would offer there and what they would show.

@Nihon

A D-toid convention? Will it be full of people bowing at the feet of the editors and morons at every corner? And the really smart people with something to say given a tiny room with no windows and they are constantly silenced by the droning of the retards?

Ya know, for the sake of authenticity?

Why are people so against this? Even they said it would be a very small event, Bungie is one of the nicest companies out there, don't demean what they've done simply because you're to close-minded to enjoy their game.

Oh and keep generalizing the people that play Halo, that makes you so smart and really helps your argument, so witty to, its not like anyone else has ever made those retarded comparisons before.

halocon could work...

if they would get some really sweet competitions going there... with halowars, halo 3 and "the mystery halo-project from Bungie", they can basicly have competitions in 3 genres of play :)
