Come be amazed by Valve's lifetime retail sales figures photo

Valve is one of those select few companies in the games industry that, for one reason or another, you just want to succeed. We're not talking purely about the rampant fanboyism you see for the big three, either.

Valve's become a force to be reckoned with, and there's a simple explanation for why that is: the company produces stellar games, its founders are vocal and speak out against DRM, and there's a massive amount of fan service being thrown about.

How then, does this positive attitude translate to actual sales? Valve has finally decided to release the retail sales figures for the vast majority of its games (no Steam sales included, sadly), and the results may surprise you.

Gamasutra has got all of the numbers, but here are some of the more interesting ones: Half-Life (9.3 million units), Half-Life 2 (6.5 million), Counter-Strike (4.2 million), Orange Box (3 million), and lastly Left 4 Dead, which is estimated to fall between 3.6 - 3.9 million units sold.

Remember, this data does not include digital download sales which, judging by how popular Steam has grown to be, would have a significant impact. Still, it's always neat to see companies give out the raw data like this, isn't it?

No surprise here. You literally can't go to any gaming site on the net without hearing fans talk about how great Valve's games are. Like the old cliche goes, "Build it, and they will come."

Read their history on Game Informer. It's really good to hear a developer doing things right getting the success they deserve.

And they deserve every single one of those sales and more. Don't ever change, Valve.

I think you forgot Valve's most important quality is that they provide endless support for games post-release. The amount of content TF2 will eventually have seen is incredible and would of been sold as a shitload of "Expansion Packs" or some other fucking trash by nearly any other company.

Valve, tapping into our wallets and the high sales numbers club, both tappings are fine by me. (terrible pun is terrible, I know, shut up)

Valve. Yeah, they're that good.

Also, you have to assume that every one of those sales turns that person on to Steam. I know I used to buy their games retail, but once Steam went into full swing, I haven't touched a retail PC game in quite a while.

All the people using SecuROM need to take a lesson from Valve. Here are the games I've pirated or will pirate in the near future that have SecuROM or some similar DRM: Mass Effect, Far Cry 2, Spore, GTA IV, and Fallout 3.

Valve games I have pirated(I like Valve games a lot):

At this point it should be very clear who is pursuing the correct strategy. And I'm not abstaining from pirating Valve games on purpose either. I just like to be able to play on Steam servers, and their games are cheap enough so that pirating them just isn't worth it.

I really do wish that they would release some sales numbers for titles on Steam though.

Its simple.
Valve give the players what they want. We get great games constant free content and automatic updates nearly all the time. No stupid drm.

You mean only 0.001% of the human population has played Half-Life 2? We need to get these figures up and spread the awesome.

Valve requires Half-life games to be activated on Steam, which is DRM of a sort, and you can't play the campaign without an internet connection because of Steam. They're not really against DRM

I still thing Half-Life was a much better game than Half-Life 2...and that goes someway to proving it

This site must be the gathering of every last Valve fanboy out there. Blizzard to me is the only company that seriously never has made a poor game. I feel Valve rarely makes games themselves. They take mods from the community and sell them as retail products, while there is sort of a honorable side to that, I don't feel Valve themselves should be applauded as great developers. They have a great community that they exploit to the nth degree

This was in Game Informer a couple of months back. They did a huge article on the history of Valve. If you have not read it, it is a quality read.

CloneTrooper: It doesn't prove anything. HL has been out for 10 years, HL2 for only 4 years. Also HL2 can be bought on Steam, which is not accounted for on these figures. And finally HL2 has higher system requirements than HL.

Totally agree, I do want to see Valve succeed. I loved HL1 and HL2, and so I'm about to purchase L4D.
