I don’t even know what to say to this story. I love how the New York Post just took a quote from a dorm-mate and ran with it — so he used to play Counter-Strike? Come on...let’s go with the obvious and much more recent cause: going off his meds. Jeez, they’ll do anything to sell papers.
"See how the crime rates in Canadian are significantly less than the US? Do you think that has anything to do with the fact that people can't buy guns instantly up here? I mean, hardly anyone has a firearm for their own protection and yet our crime rates are far lower than many cities in the US. I mean you guys can buy guns at Walmart for chrissakes."
What would you do if your government just all of a sudden decided take all of your personal freedoms away? What would you do to defend yourself when debate fails? Would you fight the government with a baseball bat versus their guns?
What you said they would never do this? What would stop them? They have the guns and you don't.
Can you see the parallel I'm trying to draw?
"Which leads me to what always confuses me about the United States, that they don't seem to focus on those problems enough, and instead focus on spending even more on their military."
Well that's because our gov't is full of morons who focus on grabbing votes by giving people what they think they "want" instead of what they "need"... Unfortunately, the average person does not want to hear that issues are very complexed and would take a LONG time to solve. they want to hear that the issues are simple and that the solutions are simple. And thus, the gov't takes the wrong actions to solve the problem.
Perfect example is the whole video game issue. No one wants to hear about the mountain of factors that could play a role. Having one scapegoat and saying that it's the source of evil and that getting rid of it will solve all of life's problems is that kind of idiocy the average person wants to hear...
unfortunatly, it's gotten so bad that politicians focus their careers around this flawed reasoning, whether their liers or actually believe that kind of BS, and use this to gain popularity and get votes... most any politician that might know what NEEDS to be done, might get pushed aside cause they aren't giving people what they want to hear...
but honestly, EVERY boy from the age 15 to the age 30 has played a video game, even if its in passing
so when one of them kills people
its all video games fault...
if video games are the cause of these things why aren't there like 95000 murders per day from these crazed video game trained killers? if anything its the fact that its easier than ever to get a gun in this country. he bought two guns a few weeks before the shooting legally, and he had been in a mental institution briefly when he refused to take medication for some disorder. people that have been in mental institutions shouldn't be given access to guns. problem solved. in fact, no one should have access to guns, if that happened no one could shoot each other. most murders solved, was that so hard?
It's news. It's video game related. It's new related to video games. That's what Destructoid does. If you don't like it, go read the New York Post.
Television is losing large swaths of the younger audience to new media. They can do nothing but hope parents keep their children away from video games so they can watch more TV. There's nothing beyond it than that.
@ Jack - "This is Jack Thompson. I wonder if you e-tards could pay attention to some facts. Besides owning FNC and the NY Post, Murdoch also owns a number of video game industry properties, including pro-game Internet news sites. "
Yup, we covered that.
"We need to get you sociopathics kiddies off these murder simulators and back to doing your homework."
I'm 26. Why don't we all let Mr. Eater-of-Sorrows know that a surprising few of us are "kiddies."
"I know facts are inconvient [sic] things for e-tards, but there they are, and here I am, right, oh so right, yet again. "
I know facts are inconvient [sic] for reactionary ambulance chasers who seek to profit from the deaths and dispair of others, but there you are, lapping blood from the gutter to quench your own thirst.
If it is, wow. The best this sack of megaton douche could come up with is e-tard? Oh, you've pushed me, Jack. You've pushed me to my limits and I can't stop myself. I'm going to say it.
You're gay!
I know that'd hurt any closed minded conservative. The thought of gay, I mean. You can blame gayness on video games.
Compare that to countries where you don't have the right to own a gun, and you find something 'surprising'. Many less people killed a year by guns. Do you think there is an inherent violence in the US which is manifested in gun crime, and the statistics would hold without guns in the mix?? Or do you think maybe giving anyone who can breathe a gun may not be the smartest idea??
I agree, someone could go crazy with a knife, but working in an emergency dept, I can tell you a lot of stabbing victims survive, unless it's a particularly brutal (read multiple wounds) attack. Gun shots can't be outrun quite as easily.
I'm also a liberal person, I believe in personal freedom. However, I do not agree that my personal freedoms extend to the right to end you life at a time of my choosing.
But again, this is a simplified argument, the notion of removing guns from the US is laughable even when you ignore the large lobby groups. The actual process would be entirely impossible.
I don't know. If that's WiiSucks, then he's doing an impressive job. Jackie does tend to troll around in blog comment threads, so it's entirely reasonable to think that he'd eventually find his way here. If so, Jim, we've finally arrived. :)
Incidentally, I realize that gun control is a tough issue. I hate guns (REAL guns, not digital guns; I know the difference) and I think they should be outlawed, but to do so would give the criminals a huge advantage until we could effectively crack down on the illegal acquisition of guns. It's a tough problem to solve.
In the army, soldiers use no money to get shotguns, pistols and other equipment they need to move around a country in which they're constantly under threat of being killed by roving terrorists.
I have the paper in front of me, the article itself doesn't actually focus on games. Just the title and the copy pasta. The rest pretty much tells you everything else you've already seen on the news, with absolutely no analyization of his gaming habits and the like.
It's pretty tame compared to Jack Thompson's appearances on TV. Only the title is really causing a problem with me, as the article does not try to sensationalize anything. It just says he played the game and figured you'll make whatever connection you want with the information that has been provided.
In short, relax and move along. Nothing to see here.
Im unsure what you mean by this question, but I'm more than happy to answer it if you clarify.
I live in a country where the 'right to bear arms' involves a licensing process, and not carrying a concealed weapon.
We don't have need for a lot of body bags.
I'll be glad to see that you're welcomed into the Destructoid community as a man befitting your prestige.
People like you are so busy pointing fingers at petty things like music with dirty words or violent video games, that you essentially strain at a gnat and swallow a whole fucking WHALE. The bottom line is that ANY of these shooters whose coattails you just LOVE to ride on, they're the ones to blame. These guys commit murder - SEVERAL times over, in many cases - and what do you do? Do you use that as an example to show people how murder is wrong? How your god says "Thou shalt not kill"? No - you use it to attack nitpicky things in video games.
If you don't fit THE common stereo type of a lawyer, I'll eat my hat. NO crime is ever the fault of the person who actually pulled the trigger - it's the video games, it's the music, she was dressed like a whore so she was asking for it, blah blah blah blah. Nothing is EVER simply the fault of the person who committed the crime. And it's people like you who are sending MY country straight to hell in a pretty little handbasket.
If there is any, ANY, justice in the world, it won't be long before you're disbarred.
Video games do not turn people into killers. People turn people into killers. At the risk of sounding like a hippy fuck, we'd have far fewer killers, and potential killers, if people were more considerate and acted less like assholes to one another. If you'd direct your efforts in that direction, Jack, you might actually be able to do some real good.
As a life long gamer I figured it was only a matter of time before the good old scapegoat and hearse-chaser entered the picture, I had just hoped it wouldn't. Unfortunately Jack was right on cue. Steve Kasmierczak failed to take his medication and that was the sole reason for his actions. People with mental disorders going off their prescriptions do erratic and harmful things. Trying to assign blame to a form of media when there are legitimate psychological causes for such actions only highlights how out of touch these moron pundits are.
The whole surrounding communities have been so deeply affected. Everyone can't seem to shake the feeling of utter weirdness permeating the town. DeKalb is a relatively boring town in the middle if miles of cornfields. Wal-Mart is a hot spot in the area for Christsakes. The residents of this community weren't ready to deal with this is kind of tragedy.
That being said, everyone had come together and supported one another. And blame has not been thrown around with abandon either. In fact I have even heard some offer sympathy for the gunman's father and sister, who so deserve it. They lost a son & brother and have to reconcile his terrible actions. All the victims and their families continue to be in our thoughts. They will all be missed. The best way to honor their memory is to not blame convenient scapegoats, but to deal with the real problems we all face. Mental illness is common and the warning signs must be observed. Be there for your friends and loved ones – listen to them and help them when it is needed - don’t ignore warnings signs.
Pretty spot-on, I think. While this guy's actions certainly aren't JUSTIFIED because people were assholes to him, the argument can be made that a mentally ill person can be pushed to his limits by cruelty from his peers. And who would really know which particular person is mentally ill vs. another? If it's plainly evident, then those who mock or tease him are all the more douchebaggish for it.
Reminds me of a lady I saw at the supermarket today. I was browsing around the chip aisle when she comes shuffling along. She looked to be in her mid-40's, maybe early 50's, and her body had a marked slant to it when she walked. She was also very wan, and her face looked . . . almost blank. You could tell she was there, I don't think she was impaired mentally.
I couldn't help but wonder what her story was. Am I looking at the products of a degenerative disease? Or at someone who used to be wheelchair-bound who can now proudly walk? Was she born that way? Did this come from some sort of abuse, even? There was no way to know.
My heart kind of sank, too, because I'm fairly certain she received her share of mockery from younger, more able-bodied people with no maturity and nothing better to do than pick on someone who had done then no harm. But that's how it is when anyone is ever different. Anything different or peculiar or unfamiliar must be bad or weird, or to be mocked.
In my opinion, Mr. Thompson is in no way different from those kinds of people. Just pick up rocks and start throwing at whatever scares you.
Actually, I give him credit for trying to dialogue with the general gaming public. Unfortunately, I then have to subtract a lot of points, since all he ever seems to do is insult gamers and spew the same recycled, barely-accurate "facts" he utters on television. Way to be professional, Jack.
@Bioautographical
Good observations. I like the way you think. I've been an "outcast," or "fringe," sort for most of my life. While I've never had the urge to go on any kind of rampage, I can certainly understand where their pain comes from. Sorry to get all super-cereal here, but there's a lot of hurting people out there. Everywhere, really. More than we realize, usually.
@Rational_Jesus
Thanks for posting. We need more people like you to stand up and help silence the Thompsons of the world.
The real issue with this person is he tried to break an addiction he was forced to develop. He was forced to take drugs because some "doctor" felt it would help him not feel so down. MAO inhibitors anyone? I wonder how many of you take them? Do you need them? What happens if you quit taking them? I got sick for a month and easily could have been capable of the actions this person carried out. I assure you, I am not kidding. I wanted to die, its as simple as that. Thankfully, I was under the care of people that knew what I was in for. This is what happens when you let the doctors drug you with anything that gets them closer to that free week in the caymans. The more they prescribe, the more they get rewarded. It has nothing to do with your mental health. It has to do with the greed of others. The doctor that puts you on this prescription gets perks for doing so and the company that makes the drug has a customer for life because you will go batshiat crazy if you quit taking them.
The story about violent video games doing ANYTHING bad is usually a cover-up so the drug companies don't get investigated and can keep making billions on drugging all of you. Creating unwilling addicts that will destroy themselves (and others) if they try to quit the drugs.
What I'm asking, is that instead of allowing a fellow countryman to defend you with lethal force when confronted with lethal force, you would prefer the Police come by later with a piece of chalk and trace your outline on the ground before hoisting you into a body bag and hauling you off to the morgue? Police are absolutely powerless to defend you against violence, random or otherwise. They only exist to pick up the pieces and MAYBE arrest the guilty.
Another reason gun control will have no effect on crime: Many guns used in crimes and murders are simply passed on to the next gang-banger and used again. Low-level thugs aren't buying new guns; they're using the same one they always have, and the same one that the guy before him had. In many cases, a suspect who is incarcerated and charged with murder usually gets charged with several more murders and shootings because, although he wasn't there, and didn't perpetrate the crime, his gun was. How exactly will banning private ownership or requiring registration stop those crimes?
The fact remains that every municipality in the United States that has passed enforceable, regulated concealed carry laws have seen a dramatic drop in violent crime, providing further proof that criminals prefer an unarmed populous. Notwithstanding the fact that private ownership of firearms deters an overeager head-of-state from declaring martial law. While the threat of gov't oppression and nanny-statism is relatively low, now, it's certainly going to be more of a concern if the west is unable to curb the tide of global terrorism. I'll be damned if I'm going to give up the right to own a gun to stay in a christian police state.
Dear Mr. Thompson,
I somewhat familiar with your work. I actually think I agree with you on one of you main arguments. Minors shouldn't be able to buy mature rated games.
Why is that what your hanging your hat on? Kids shouldn't be allowed to buy playboy, jack daniels or diet pills either.
They do though don't they. Why don't you go after these other "ills of society"? That is why I don't pay attention to you.
You see, there are HUGE companies out there who's soul goal in life is to create and maintain addictions in every person they can. The government is KILLING THOUSANDS of our own citizens based on mis-information and the idea that we are doing the country we are invading some good. Our schools teach to the dumbest kid in the room thus making every other kid a little more bored with school and a little dumber. there are large business that want to steal as much money from as many people as possible before they get caught because the punishment for them is far less than the profits from committing the crime. We have huge issues with sexual predators in this country and the ways they are being improperly sentenced and dealt with that enables them to keep committing atrocities. Theres more, I could go on for hours but this is enough for my point.
I applaud you for doing something. You, unlike most, are not sitting on your hands. However, I feel like your arguments are trite and obviously meant to do nothing but keep your name buzzing. Hooray for you Mr.Thompson. I hope you achieve what ever it is your trying to do (what is your goal again?).
I would like to propose this to you good sir. The amount of buzz you could create if you were to say "Phizer want to make your kid an addict" would be ten times what your getting right now. More people of BOTH sides of your moral fence would be willing to listen to you. As you are right now? Well, I don't care. I am a father of 2 (home schooled) gainfully employed (not a lawyer however) married (to a woman) I vote (not telling, go make up your own minds!) and I couldn't care less if 14 year old billy is allowed to buy Gears of War. Its his parents fault and that is that. If my son showed up with GTA4 he would lose his xbox and he knows it.
Good luck with whatever it is your trying to do and I wish you well sir.
I agree, you can't take the guns out of the US now, I actually said that at the end of my original comment, the notion of removing guns from your country is laughable at best, I understand that people are not just going to hand them over and then stop thinking about them.
However, the notion that having guns is saving lives is also laughable. The US has the highest homicide rates by both gun death and non gun death in the developed world. You can't tell me giving people guns has helped with this rate of your own people killing each other.
@Tehboognish MAOI's?? They're like a last line antidepressant with a fucking tonne of side effects (including bad reactions if you eat cheese or drink red wine). I would hope you had at least been tried on other meds before these, and failed treatment, otherwise I agree, your doctor is taking kickbacks, which is grossly unethical in most health systems.
While I feel similarly to you about taking medications, there are some people who need it to function/live a normal life.
Why would you insult people when you're trying make them take your side on an issue? If you're going into a room with a hostile audience, you don't start out your introduction by insulting them. Grow up.
Good response! He acted like a kid in his post. Sure we all swore and what not but we are e-tards he's supposed to be the pro here.
...
E-tards.
I'm amazed you can figure out how to work a keyboard, let alone create an account to post with.
Oh what a society we live in. First amendment in full effect.
There are crusades worth pursuing, but this isn't one of them. You have a knack for turning these kinds of situations into media circuses and that's a gift. Why don't you use it for something that matters? You know, instead of your usual shameless self promotion while taking advantage of other people's personal tragedies.
