Collective sigh: Xbox 360 set-top box doesn't record television photo

Anyone thinking that the recently announced partnership between Microsoft and British Telecom would yield a new, interesting way to use the Xbox 360 might be a bit disappointed.

The new Xbox 360 service will launch this summer, and will only be available to BT Broadband subscribers. The service will feature access to on-demand movies, "near-live" sporting events, and "other content." What it won't do is record live TV, a feature that will be found in PlayTV, the personal recorder service being launched in Europe for the PlayStation 3

That said, Microsoft has contacted Eurogamer in an effort to clarify the situation stating that the "Xbox 360 is able to offer the complete Microsoft mediaroom experience, including both live TV and VOD, when delivered over an Internet Protocol network." Additionally, "customers can transfer live television content to their Xbox 360 that they have captured on their set top box."

So in other words, the new service is essentially an enhanced Video Marketplace service, right? Maybe? Yes?

A picture of win right there. But seriously, the service is being underpinned by BT. I didn't exactly have high hopes.

Fuck that DRM shit, sticking with my tivo. Tivotogo encodes all my stuff onto my ipod so I can watch tv while taking a shit anywhere!

@AgentMOO:

TiVo is epic. People don't understand how much better it is than the free DVR you get from your shitty cable/satellite company (generally, there are a few exceptions).

Sounds like a gimmick. MS is disguising a 360 for people who don't and won't buy consoles.

If you don't watch that much tv this obviously isn't something that you really care about. But for those that do, myself not included, its probably something that you might think about using but probably won't. Unless it trumps tivo, not bloody likely, it just won't be worth using. I'm not paying for an inferior service.

I'd like a console that has dvr capabilities. I'd love to take my psp to work and have all of yesterday's programs already on it for me to enjoy later.

The TV signal is being fed right into the Xbox, yet you can't record TV with it? The signal is even being delivered over the internet! It shouldn't be diffuclt to implement!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I think Microsoft's "big" announcement just gets worse as more information comes out. I think Nick hit it on the head; Enhanced Video Marketplace is pretty much what's being offered.

The Xbox 360 can record live IPTV streams. The problem is BT Vision doesn't actually use live IPTV streams. It uses Digital Video Broadcast Terrestrial (DVB-T, otherwise known in the UK as Freeview) for Live TV, and uses IP for pre-recorded video on demand.

I'm guessing AT&T Uverse users will be able to record live TV on their Xbox 360s, whenever AT&T gets around to supporting the 360.
