Codies: Natal won't replace traditional controls photo

At E3, Microsoft proudly showed someone using a system of mystical motions in order to play a racing game, but despite Project Natal's promise of a brave new tomorrow, genre staple Codemasters remains skeptical, believing traditional controllers are the way to go.

"The complexity of control for a racing game, certainly for a core racing game like ours, requires a controller," explains game design manager Ralph Fulton. "It requires feedback, and I don't think waving your hands around and pretending you're steering a car offers you the precision or the feedback that racing games require.

"That's not to say that I don't think you could do some really cool things, particularly with Natal, which can function as additional control over and above the controller in racing games. But I certainly don't ever see it replacing the wheel or the controller as the principle controller method."

That said, Fulton is excited to get kits for both Natal and the Sony Wiimote, although he believes Natal is more exciting because Sony's little wand doesn't look as new. Fair point, really.

I don't care what you say.

Everyone is stealing ideas from Nintendo.

Aren't Microsoft bringing out a WiiMote as well? It's just stupid.

Also, yeah, controllers are still the best way to go, IMO.

You know, I'm sure people said the same about games going 3d. All it will really take is one killer app to get people really excited about this, and then hopefully developers will run with the new hardware. Mirror's Edge, for instance, would rock with Natal.

On the other hand, we might get Wii-esque shovelwear. Which wouldn't be good.

I still see potential in Natal, hopefully you are right Uzzy. If Natal works almost as advertised and no good games come out for it, then we'll know devs are not very creative.

BTW, seriously, is there a way to block Sexualchocolate's comments? It is just spam.

Can you elaborate on that? I'm not even sure how one would run forward in that game using Natal let alone pull of any other moves. Unless you mean using Natal in addition to a controller for some reason.

The thing that makes me sceptical about Natal is that is seems like nothing more than a next gen eyetoy. Now the eyetoy was kind of fun but nothing groundbreaking was ever produced for it so I'm struggling to see how an, admittedly more advanced but similar product has got so many people so excited. But hey, I'm no games designer, I hope to be proved wrong.

And I agree comradetrotskii, I can't see how a game like Mirrors Edge could be improved with Natal? The idea of me running round my living room and leaping onto the sofa fills me with dread, I'd probably break my neck!

I don't its gonna amount to anything really. I only see it as a way for MS to get some of the hype the Wii is getting for so long, as well as trying to go for the "casual" croud that has probably never held a controller in their lives. Not to mention that it was anounced at a time where MS was desperate to remain relevant, having nothing big to show for some time now and without anything big on the horizon either. It was the same time Kojima's new title was anounced... They need the attention...

I fail to see the use in Natal, I see it as Microsofts attempt at "me too! but we can make it even more rediculous!". whats the point of using motion controls if it will always be limited by the physical ability of the user. I mean unless I can do a triple roundhouse backflip followed by a 100 hand slap and have Natal track all of it perfectly, then why the hell would I care about flailing around like a zombie moron in my living room.

I think that it'd be possible to translate Mirror's Edge into Natal controls. Running on the spot can translate to forward movement, you jump for jumps, stretch your arms out to reach for something. That said, I'm not an expert, and it would certainly take a few attempts to get a control system that works well.

What Natal needs is a 'Super Mario 64' game. Something that shows how gaming with Natal can work, and how good it can be. I hope the developers are up to the task of it

LOL. Sorry dude but I'm pretty sure everyone when tasked of thinking how Mirrors Edge could be controlled with Natal instantly came up with those ideas. One microsecond after that instantaneous response they then realised how ridiculous that would be.

Would trying to scratch my arse while driving in Natal completely flip out my car and boot me into last place? This is the most serious issue that needs to be answered right now.

Natal LOOKS new?

A 2 year old can see all Natal is a freaking eyetoy! GAH!

I'm not saying sony's option looks new either but what WOW'ed me about Sony's tech is that it actually looked like it would VIABLE for gaming.

I have a coffee table, so Natal can't see my feet. Am I supposed to move my table everytime I want to use Natal or am I just shit out of luck?

I'm really tired of these new fangled control systems. I mean it's a neat concept but really, it's so un-needed.

No thanks, chicken spanks, army tanks, money banks and major ranks.

I never use my Wii, I never bought the PS3 Eye thing so this isn't in my league of interests at all.

Sure, I'll add one objection at a time.

How would you turn your character or look up or down?

I don't see this replacing the controller, but an alternative? Possibly, just like you can buy a racing wheel for racing games, you could buy this instead for your racing games or other...games? I mean, definitely it could be used as a new tool for communication, and interaction out-of-game, allowing for a kind of PlayStation Home (or whatever it's called. Sorry, I don't have a PS3 XD) to be more interactive. Perhaps rather than avatars, it'll create a rough 3d model of you... I don't know, but shooting games just won't work with Natal, how the hell would it detect you firing your weapon? Props? OH GOD!
