I was considering buying DiRT 3, but with what happened with the online pass and this news of closing servers... yeah, not happening.
First off shit not shot. Second off my first comment is just my knee jerk reaction, I'm sorry to those of you that still play, that sucks. Is there no way to p2p?

Did you mean the other way around? By way of dedicated servers, I'm still able to play Unreal Tournament, a game from 1999, with other people online.
It's because of reliance on half assed shoddy match-making that consoles have an online shelf life of about 1-2 years, now.

I hate seeing this. There are games from 15 years ago I can still connect to a buddy of mine and play on pc. I wish developers would leave us with this option to host a game ourselves when it's time to shut down the online
Yeah, I'm getting pretty sick and tired of developers (or whoever controls the development money) not future proofing their games.
MS holds himself servers for xbox live(they're not cheap as Sony who demands from developers to hold servers for their own games).
I hate to agree with sofik, but he's right. MS allows play through XBL servers, ie 'that thing you pay 60 bucks a year for,' so online play is rarely sacrificed unless it's an MMO-style game that uses it's own servers.

They allow matchmaking through their servers, not actual play since virtually everything is P2P on 360.
Thankfully the xbox version is still playable online, I still play michigan demolition derby regularly, closest thing to actual demolition derby available this gen.
I don't know if this is still true or not, but doesn't Microsoft itself host the servers for all of the games on Xbox Live? For the PS3 and PC dev's have to host their own servers. So I guess the Live fee is also there to cover for those costs so the developers don't have to pay for that. That might have something to do with why the xbox multiplayer is still active.
I think the problem is all the Elite ranked players, vote-kick anyone that hasn't reached Elite rank (aka new players). New players get sick of trying and quit. Then eventually all the Elite ranked players get bored and quit. Then there's not enough players left for them to warrant keeping the servers online. Vote kicking was a stupid thing to have, and abused to hell.
why the hell would they kill pc multi on this game, just let people make their own servers for the pc
