Codemasters' CEO thinks the PS3 can set a new trend photo

Sony has said all along that the words "future proof" were etched into the PlayStation 3's master plan from the onset, and judging by the complexity of the hardware, that case can certainly be argued. If you think that it will be enough to extend the competitive life of the console to around 10 years or so, well then, you are in good company. Speaking to Next-Gen, Codemasters' CEO Rod Cousens echoed that sentiment:

"I really do think it's going to be a ten year cycle and I do think that's something that's been overlooked when people are fairly dismissive of certain hardware platforms."

More on this (as well as my opinion) after the jump.

He reasons that Blu-ray's recent edge over HD-DVD combined with the historical evidence that Sony's successfully traveled down a similar road with the PS2, shows that it would be unwise to underestimate the house that Kutaragi built. In the words of Cousins, Sony is on the cusp of going on the offensive and taking back what they consider to be rightfully theirs:

"I certainly think it's premature to dismiss Sony because I believe that they're only now showing signs of ramping up and that shouldn't come as any surprise to people given the trail of to be released dates of Wii and 360 and given the price points that they were coming in at, and given the lack of software supporting the format. I believe all those ingredients are starting to merge and I would expect Sony to have real momentum over the coming years."

Will the PS3 enjoy a longer life than the PS2? It certainly could, but it would ultimately come down to two very important things: the future cost of the console, and the continued availability of games for the system that people want to play on it; taking into consideration they are made to begin with.

The major point of contention is whether or not it will even matter four, eight, or more years down the road. Microsoft and Nintendo will certainly have introduced newer hardware long before this ten-year span, and it would be laughable to think that Sony isn't also hard at work on the PS4 at this very moment. It would be prudent for Sony to focus with laser-beam precision on the present.

The strength of the PS2 was undoubtedly reflective of the competitiveness it showed all along, and was not due to the "just wait and see what we will do in the future" mentality that Rod Cousens is talking about. MS and Nintendo are more than formidable at this point, and the PS3 has the most to lose right now. Tomorrow will take care of itself.

And if Sony produces as many good games as it did with the PS2 it isn't unreasonable at all to expect a similar lifespan, if not longer.

I like the people at Codemasters. However, I think it is stupid to see the PS3 going anywhere but up based on the fact that Sony has too much money invested where they wouldn't all of a sudden just drop support of the machine now. Maybe 6 months to a year ago one could definitely argue that the PS3 was dying a slow death, but something simple such as one good title (ie Uncharted) and a price drop was just about enough to ensure that the least, we will not be living in a 'one console world' as envisioned by.. eh.. who was it, EA that had made the statement not too long ago?

Wii wins this gen with last gen insides. PS3 and 360 already have their user bases with enough fanboys on each side that neither will die out or anything. Lets all stfuajpg.

I wish the PS3 would hurry up and die so I can get a real PS3. The PS3 right now is just a clone of the Xbox (a house sized console packed with new technology at a high price), but I want a clone of what the PS2 did (tech in between what the Xbox and Wii has, price in the middle of the two). Kill the PS3 and give me my real sequel to the PS2 Goddamit.

Just because a console might be in manufacture for 10 years doesn't mean it won't be replaced by a newer model. The PS2 probably has another 2 years or so (maybe more if the PS3 doesn't get its PS2 chip back), so the PS2 will likely meet the 10-year lifespan. The PS3? Er, maybe.

i'm not trying to start shit, but do those that say "in 'x' years the next console will be out" really not think about the ps2 and how it is still selling after the ps3 was launched. i means sure. microsoft ditched the first xbox like a prom night baby, but sony has proven you don't have to just to stay ahead.

Sony blew their load as soon as they committed to Blu-Ray technology. So much of their capital has been spent to woo studio support that they doomed their money making gaming rig to 3rd place throughout the rest of its lifespan. That's not to say that it won't get its act together or not have any worthy games to play. It just means that they will effectively lose (if not already lost) at least half of its install base from what they had with the PS2 and in turn, competition (Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii replacements and the possibility of a gaming newcomer -- Apple or Google, perhaps) of will force their hand to bring out the PS4? sooner than they intended. Hell if their done licking their wounds, they'll get that new system out 6-12 months in advance of the next Xbox.

@qo_op:
If the PS3 had any special powers I don't think Sony would be keeping them secret.

The PS3 needs more games and a reduced price point if they want to gain some momentum. Until then, the PS3 will have mediocre sales at best.

But thats not stopping me from buying one :P

Sony just needs to do what it's doing now. Bring out the good games and keep lowering the price point when it needs to. What's the 360 gonna do? Keep breaking down on people? NEWSFLASH:360 Owners..they're not fixing that problem. You think their going to redesign their Circular Red Light Generator before they put out their new machine??

Naw..they'll just keep sending coffins and eventually people will wake up and say Fuck it after their fourth one or sixth..everyman has their different bottom and resent the hell outta them and check out the other sise of the field.

All Sony has to do is just keep on bringing more games and refining their free online structure. The rest will take care of itself.

Not sure where the Xbox bashing comes from, but they have already had a hardware revision where they reduce the die size of both the GPU and CPU, which should reduce heat and bring the RROD's down. Next year or thereabouts there will be another revision to switch to really small dies which could in theory make it failproof.

Just thought that I would put that out there.

Not "Ummm yeah well if you bitch at customer service you get your coffin faster.."..WTF??

I was the BIGGEST ADVOCATE for the 360!! Until it died on me FOUR TIMES. After that when I got it back it again I just gave it to my kid more or less. ... If only the 360 didn't have the best games and best online support of all the consoles, I would easily give up on it.

I have sent back 2 consoles. Maybe when I am on my fourth one I might re-think staying with the Xbox, but again, they have the best of everything else except working hardware, which as far as I can tell has been fixed.

@ Yojimbo

99% of those Xbox's that died were from the first version of the console..before adding heatsinks and before the first hardware revision that occurred last fall.

So they have already updated the console as a countermeasure against RROD, and are also most certainly going to do another revision in approx. 1 year. I will bet my e-cred on it.

I'm just responding to your assertions that Microsoft would never redesign their consoles to make them more stable. Wouldn't want people to get the wrong idea.

Why is it that gamers just simply can't accept more than one console in the home?

If you can't deduce that the PS3 is a superior media machine than any home console at the moment, than you seriously haven't owned one recently.

It's a nice console, as I've recently discovered over the weekend, but it's not supplanting anything in my home, I have all three consoles and they all serve their purpose for me. I enjoy all three of them.

Yojimbo, so yours has broken 4 times. Mine's broken twice. I never had to pay for the repair and I always had it back less than three weeks later with a free month of Xbox Live Gold strapped inside. I can only hope that this is the last time I have to get it repaired. If not, hopefully next time.

I'd certainly like to see longer lifespans on -- hell, ANY piece of entertainment technology, be it a PS3, Xbox, or even PC. I honestly have a hard time believing that Sony will make it their console of choice for ten full years, though. Especially if Microsoft manages to put together a good follow-up to the 360, which will surely be out in less than ten years. Still, it's a nice thought.

As for the 360, I'll still side with it, based only on personal preference. The hardware is disgustingly shitty, but I could never leave behind their game selection and online service. The PS3 still has yet to entice me. Be offended by that, if you must.

yojimbo, lmao! the easter bunny and santa, that reminds me a lobo comic i have. but seriously if ms had "any" quality control they wouldn't outsource their product to the lowest bid as i believe sony partners with companys like nvidia, divx, ibm and more. they have better quality control as they make the consoles to work. hell my ps2 used to mess up, guess what fixed it, a hard smack on the side and whammo....its alive! my ps3 already got dropped about 3 feet 7 months ago and not a problem just a little ding in the surface. i payed once, i play everyday,no sending anything in to get fixed. that's unacceptable in my opinion and just to beat sony to the market. here's your taco bell sir, i'm eating don paublo's. here's your regs, i'll take the chronic. everybody gets what they pay for i guess.

I don't think the PS3 will be the key to a 10 year future. Competition will make that hard. There will always be a bigger and better.

And ultimately, it doesn't even come down to the hardware. It comes down to the games. Sure, the hardware will help sustain an influx of games but it's not necessary.

Realize that all Sony consoles have been built for ten year lifespans. The PSone had its games dry up in 2005, a decade post launch, and the PS2 will continue to be supported for the foreseeable future.

Just because the PS3 has a ten year expectancy, doesn't mean the PS4 isn't coming four years from now.

The PS3 was dead on arrival. By the time they would fix all the serious flaws, it wouldn't be the same console anymore, it would be the PS4. My theory is that since Sony doesn't seem to be taking kindly to the idea of failure, they will keep attempting to fix it and when they're done, still call it a PS3. They're silly like that. But I don't think people will take kindly to them making this such a slow process. If they don't do better on their next gen console, they've pretty much officially screwed themselves over. I wish I could still be a Sony fangirl. The PS2 is still my favorite system and I still buy new games for it on a regular basis, but I would really like to be able to use some new technology every now and again, and the way it's looking, I'm probably going to just skip this gen. I'll probably buy a Wii and a 360, this summer though. (2 systems for the price of one!)

If sony keeps up its' current trend with the PS3, I think they could easy gain a lot of lost ground and meet a ten-year lifespan. The console obviously has a lot of untapped potential, and lately even appears to becoming a little more friendly to developers (or at least they're getting used to the architecture).

I don’t see how the PS3 can ever be as successful as the PS2 was. I own one, and I love it...but you know why Sony has sold over 120 million PS2s? Because they were first to market, had a relatively cheap price point, and had a fantastic library of games. The PS3 didn’t qualify for either of the first two criteria, and while it’s getting there, it still doesn’t have the library that the 360 has. There are plenty of great games, but the 360 already has a huge install base. Sure, the PS3 might be around until 2015 or something, but I’m sure the 2160p-compatible PS4 will be out by then.

If anything is going to have a longer than five-year life, it would be the 360, due to its large user base and a constant stream of games. I could easily see it having golden years similar to the PS2. That is, if MS doesn't completely drop support for it like they did with the Xbox.

I really hope this is going to be a 10 year console cycle. I've had a Wii for about a year and a PSTriple since November, but I'm still catching up on PS2 games. I won't have time to get through even half of the games that will need playing for this generation by the time that they start talking new consoles in 3 years or so, or 2 years in the case of microsoft.

I can't possibly be alone in thinking that the slow start to this generation is a good thing.
