CoD5 wants to 'redefine' WWII shooters

CoD5 wants to 'redefine' WWII shooters photo
     Activision

When the first details of Call of Duty 5: World at War were revealed, there was much talk of the unique new features that were promised (flamethrowers for the win) and just as much chat about the World War II setting. Treyarch is not deaf to concerns about returning to WWII, and aims to smash any doubts about the decision.

"Modern Warfare opened the door to so many people new to Call of Duty," stated Senior Producer Noah Heller. "The game built great fertile ground for us to start on and if we're going to say: 'Look it's Christmas, here's another Call of Duty as you loved it last year', then we need to make sure the game is high quality or people won't trust what Call of Duty is."

"This has to be the best shooter and has to redefine the World War II genre."

Kudos to Treyarch for ambition, but a lot of gamers are skeptical of the studio after its prior efforts in the Call of Duty franchise. Treyarch has a lot of proving to do and it seems the team wishes to rise to the occasion. Good for them. Here's hoping they can provide something fresh and exciting in an otherwise stale genre.

I’ll reserve judgment until the game is out, but at least they understand that the onus is on them to follow up the amazing CoD 4 with a game that’s as good (or hopefully, better).

CoD4 opened so many people up to the Call of Duty series.

CoD5 is going to slam the door back in their faces again.

I don't want a redefinition of WWII, I DON'T WANT WWII thats the issue. CoD5 is just going to be such a huge step backwards.

Here's a crazy idea - do another fucking war. Who the fuck decided it was the only war in history? How about World War 1? Vimy Ridge, Paschendalle, Hill 60, etc. I'd love an infantry combat game about that. Show what it's like to match in line with 10,000 other people, and have 800 of your survive the charge.

The number of people who've bitched "Not another WWII game!" surely exceeds the number of people who actually died in the war.

Yeah, this will be a big step back for the CoD series. To be honest, I probably won't have any interest in any further games in the series unless Infinity Ward makes another one (i hear they aren't working on a CoD game right now).

Infinity Ward did such a great job by taking the CoD series to the next level and Treyarch is just going to take a giant leap backwards. Just a little bit of news to the developers, people are sick and fucking tired of having 10 WWII games every fucking year.

And aside from having a lot of WWII games, there have already been some really good WWII games. Treyarch will really have to do something amazing to top the previous CoD games as well as the amazing series that is Brothers in Arms.

What about a different area of ww2?? Pacific has been done, but what about the russian front, or north africa??

In the end it's all ww2, and I guess thats the problem.

Stupid, just stupid.

They were going in the right direction with COD4; why the hell start going backwards again? Even if it's not being made by Infinity Ward, they can't think of anything else to use in a FPS? As a game scenario, WWII really needs to take a long break before going back to the same battles known through its history. Again.

I'm sure it will still sell like hotcakes though. :(

I heard that Call of Duty VI will take place on Mars, and then Call of Duty VII will take place during the Roman Empire, and then Call of Duty XIII will take place on Deep Space 9. Call of Duty IX will, of course, take place in Fantasia and the final battle will be at the Childlike Empress' castle.

The Korean and vietnam wars are two that are relatively untouched by games, why couldn't cod5 have picked on of those?

@deanhatescoffee: Hm, Call of Duty IX sounds endearing and potentialy awesome. Say, are there fairies in Fantasia? I'd love to shove an M16 grenade into queen fairy's throne room.

There's only one wish left for the habitants of Fantasia. A death wish.

Treyarch has already provided the low points for the CoD series. Why even give them another chance?

I think the correct term would be re-re-re-re-re-define. I've heard this one too many times before. No thanks, Treyarch

"They were going in the right direction with COD4; why the hell start going backwards again?"

This game was commissioned by Activision and was in development before CoD 4 was even released: Activision didn't know how people would respond to a "modern" CoD so they had a WWII version in development as a "safe" game to go back to if CoD 4 flopped.

And why do people rip CoD 3 so much? It had a very rushed development cycle (less than a year) and still turned out fairly decent.

As for the "Treyarch can't outdo Infinity Ward" sentiment, that's false, since they already have: remember United Offensive for the original CoD? That was superior to the base game in nearly every way.

I think it's a ballsy move, I'm sure the moving backwards idea has cross through their heads, but maybe if they can succeed in taking all the great elements in CoD4, and put better, more, nicer looking: maps, story line, game types, but weapons will be limited. I think it would fantastic to pull a GRAW, squad command with your group. Take the movie Saving Private Ryan... and make it the game. Also what would/could majorly add to the concept of the game is if it were based on true events.. some of the other games had far fetched levels and after web searching found some to had never happened. How can you make up WWII?

Listen to ElfShotTheFood. There's some sense there. I can't say anything about the new CoD (yet), but man ... wait until you at least see the game and know more about it before you tear it a new one.

CoD: United Offensive was a Grey Matter game (expansion) to CoD which was clearly superior to the competing Medal of Honor franchises. Later, Grey Matter was folded into Treyarch.

Good point, I suppose. I just think it's a bit early to dismiss the game as garbage. Spacecat was impressed.

Sorry, I played CoD1 and UO less than a month ago, and UO is shit. I gave up when I realized the developers didn't have any actual content, so they'd just have you defend the same are for 10 fucking minutes.

Oh, and I assume CoD5 will be console only coming from Treyarch, so I don't care =D.

"I want a World War 1 game, trenches, crappy planes, trench raids, biological warfare and the introduction of tanks onto the battlefield, what more could you want."

See, that's what I was talking about. WW1 has so many unique and fresh ideas for a first person shooter, yet is virtually untouched (except games like Red Baron... 15 years ago) by studios.

Figure it out people! There are many, many other wars you can beat to a pulp copying eachother with!

the crappy thing is that WW2 has only crappy guns and WW1 wasn't much better... just give us the NOW or near-future to fight in, at least we've got decent guns!

Or, even better, the civil war! Treyarch can go nuts with QTE's. Each time you fire your musket, you get to execute a sixteen button press QTE that takes almost sixty seconds!!!
