When the first details of Call of Duty 5: World at War were revealed, there was much talk of the unique new features that were promised (flamethrowers for the win) and just as much chat about the World War II setting. Treyarch is not deaf to concerns about returning to WWII, and aims to smash any doubts about the decision.
"Modern Warfare opened the door to so many people new to Call of Duty," stated Senior Producer Noah Heller. "The game built great fertile ground for us to start on and if we're going to say: 'Look it's Christmas, here's another Call of Duty as you loved it last year', then we need to make sure the game is high quality or people won't trust what Call of Duty is."
"This has to be the best shooter and has to redefine the World War II genre."
Kudos to Treyarch for ambition, but a lot of gamers are skeptical of the studio after its prior efforts in the Call of Duty franchise. Treyarch has a lot of proving to do and it seems the team wishes to rise to the occasion. Good for them. Here's hoping they can provide something fresh and exciting in an otherwise stale genre.

CoD5 is going to slam the door back in their faces again.
Infinity Ward did such a great job by taking the CoD series to the next level and Treyarch is just going to take a giant leap backwards. Just a little bit of news to the developers, people are sick and fucking tired of having 10 WWII games every fucking year.
And aside from having a lot of WWII games, there have already been some really good WWII games. Treyarch will really have to do something amazing to top the previous CoD games as well as the amazing series that is Brothers in Arms.
In the end it's all ww2, and I guess thats the problem.
Stupid, just stupid.
I'm sure it will still sell like hotcakes though. :(
There's only one wish left for the habitants of Fantasia. A death wish.
This game was commissioned by Activision and was in development before CoD 4 was even released: Activision didn't know how people would respond to a "modern" CoD so they had a WWII version in development as a "safe" game to go back to if CoD 4 flopped.
And why do people rip CoD 3 so much? It had a very rushed development cycle (less than a year) and still turned out fairly decent.
As for the "Treyarch can't outdo Infinity Ward" sentiment, that's false, since they already have: remember United Offensive for the original CoD? That was superior to the base game in nearly every way.
@Nick: How many times does a horse have to lose before you choose not to bet on it?
Oh, and I assume CoD5 will be console only coming from Treyarch, so I don't care =D.
See, that's what I was talking about. WW1 has so many unique and fresh ideas for a first person shooter, yet is virtually untouched (except games like Red Baron... 15 years ago) by studios.
Figure it out people! There are many, many other wars you can beat to a pulp copying eachother with!
