By far the biggest new feature coming from the multiplayer in Treyarch's upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops is the new money system, which features fake money that players can earn (and gamble with) called "COD Points." It's a really intriguing feature, and looks like it will be a blast, but it occurred to me that Call of Duty is a yearly franchise and after spending so much time and effort earning "COD Points" it would be a real pain if they were just obliterated in the next installment of the game. Fortunately for my worrying mind we could be seeing our "COD Points" stick around in the franchise.
I put the question to David Vonderhaa, one of the lead devs on Black Ops's multplayer, and he responded:
Here's the simple way to answer that question -- though there's really no simple answer to that question -- but here's the simple answer: That we believe in general that a lot of the stuff that you're doing in the game could carry over to future games, but we have to establish something really strong and positive right now to be sure it's worth carrying over.
If we get this one in the box and people respond to it well then maybe we'll find some way of carrying it over. You know, maybe it's one-for-one, maybe it's ten-for-one, maybe you trade them in, trade them up, trade them over. Who knows. It's an economy so these are things that are possible. These are things that we've bounced around, but there's no concrete plans on what to do with this next ... We have to make this game amazing first.
I know that one of my biggest annoyances with any franchise is that you often have to start all over from scratch in the next game. With an in game economy running through the series, Call of Duty could definitely have something that really sets it apart from other shooters.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Wait, they're already doing that AND MUCH MORE? What a surprise!
...I'm so glad I don't care about this franchise.
This, 100%. Does anybody else think this is just a cheap scheme to keep people hooked? That's the impression I got when they talked about it on the Joystiq podcast.
oh, i get it now, they want to enslave us by thinking these points actually mean something. its like spending money on the xbla or psn store and don't want to lose what i have put in it. except these points are not currency but a dick measuring contest.
fuck activision.
This is the seed. They will monetize this. I can deal with that; but not a subscription fee.
shit, they'll monetize this and charge people to transfer them to the next cod game next year. BET!
Bet? Try guarantee.
I didn't realise that 10 years ago, stores were giving away food for free.
@brod: Game aren't free, either. This is a completely new world. At one point it was £1 per life and you had to wait in a queue, we're going back to a world that is similar, but ever so slightly better. I complain about Live Gold charging, but it's better than us all waiting around at an arcade. (Apart from the meeting people thing.)
There's supposed to be *ahem* semi-dedicated servers for the PC version... so far though, GameServers.com is the sole known authorized provider ($14.95/18 players ranked, or $0.99/player unranked), and it may use the "playlist" format again. No idea what will be going on on the console end.
