CoD 4 Variety Map Pack now out on PSN...but caveat emptor: it's region-locked photo

As promised, those of us who own Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on the PS3 can now enjoy four new multiplayer maps! I bet you 360 owners are all going, “Been there, done that,” but you’ve already been playing on Killhouse, Broadcast, Chinatown, and Creek for the past three weeks — so keep quiet and let us have our moment in the sun, okay? The map pack is now available on the PlayStation Network for $9.99.

But there’s an important side note to the map pack. In a post on his blog, fourzerotwo warns that the map pack is region-locked, so you’ll have to log in to your own country’s PlayStation Store to purchase the DLC that is compatible with your disc. In other words, don’t bother trying to download the map pack through an international friend’s account, you pirates:

If you have the GERMAN version of the game, you MUST purchase the GERMAN version of the map pack.

If you have the UK version of the game, you MUST purchase the UK version of the map pack.

Just make sure that the Disc version and the Map Pack version matches up. If you have an [sic] UK version of the game, DO NOT purchase a German version of the map pack. It won’t work. The same goes for any other mismatched version.

Apparently, Infinity Ward is talking with Sony to try and figure out a solution for people who have already spent the $10 on a non-compatible version. One more thing of note that the press release (after the jump) mentions is the release date for the PS3 version of the GOTY edition of CoD 4: apparently, it will be out on May 6th, and it’ll include the same free token for the Variety Map Pack that the 360 version does. Either way, I’m going to download the maps later tonight — who’s with me? Or do you have them already? Remember, the Double XP Weekend began as of 7:01 PM EDT, so hop on the PSN and get fragging!

The Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Variety Map Pack features four new multiplayer maps including “Broadcast,” featuring tight corridors and wide open parking lots where large groups will utilize close-quarter fighting and strategic maneuvers; “Chinatown” where night battles well lit by the full moon can play havoc against a backdrop of brightly colored lamps, antique shops and neon signs of the local district; “Killhouse,” a desolate warehouse under enemy attack where squads will need to move through building mock-ups and plywood walls in order to take control of the combat arena; and “Creek,” a wide open village in a heavily wooded area where battles are fought among high ridgelines and deep in underground caves.

Additionally, the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Game of the Year Edition for the PLAYSTATION 3 system will ship to North American retailers on May 6. The new title features the intense cinematic warfare of the original award-winning game and a token to access the explosive new multiplayer maps featured in the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Variety Map Pack. The game is rated “M” (Mature) by the ESRB for Intense Violence, Strong Language, Blood and Gore.

Why is French Guiana a different region than the rest of South America? I thought all of SA was Region 4? Or is that wrong?

Yeah, make sure that you are downloading the right thing. More importantly, though, is that it seems so far that the PSN is holding up well with all the downloads. It took only a couple of minutes to download and have been playing for the last few hours with no issues. Good job Sony.

What? I knew they were region locked but I didn't knew it was this bad. In other words, I thought I could download the UK version.

@Kif
I'm sharing my PSN game with a couple of other Dtoiders. So that way I don't have to pay ten bucks for the maps. But I'm in Holland and the guys I know are in the US.

@Shin, they are not, that's the weird thing. They shouldn't region lock the dlc if the game isn't.

Anyway, I'm skipping this DLC because in a matter of hours I'll be playing MGO and after that I'll be playing GTAIV, I'm pretty much done with COD4.

I'd be surprised if there is a legit copy of COD4 in the whole country of Ch1na, since you can buy it everywhere for about 80 cents.

Region locking maps isn't really a big deal and I guess it keeps the pirates away. Kind of strange though. I don't think I've seen a region locked map pack...

For a second, I thought the online play of these maps are also region locked, but I am guessing only the purchase and download is region locked.

Doesn't matter whether they're region locked at all as they're all out at the same time.

I don't really see the reasoning behind region locking the content. Are they just trying to even out distribution to take the load off their servers?
