Co-op RPG Neverwinter announced for PC photo

Atari and Cryptic Studios have today announced a brand new roleplaying game set in the Dungeons and Dragons world, Neverwinter. The relatively successful MMO developer has pegged Neverwinter as a "co-op RPG" and it's due out for PC in Q4 of 2011.

Neverwinter gives players one of five classic D&D classes to choose from. They can them team up with AI or human allies to create a co-op team of five characters. Players will also be able to create their own quests and stories using a new content generation system that has been given the working title of Forge.

This actually sounds pretty damn hot. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this one. Keep an eye on the game's official site right here for upcoming news.

I've actually been going through the original Neverwinter Nights with my brother. Still a lot of fun. Hopefully this one will be even better.

Only five classes though? :(

Sounds reasonably interesting.

I was like, "Neverwinter Nights? What?"
But I guess not. Just an unoriginal name. :-D ... Not that I'm complaining about an MMO. I'm still down. Lol.

I want to be happy about this, since I loved NWN. But Cryptic? I guess they are done befouling the Star Trek franchise with STO, so now its time to move on to another.

I'm also somewhat confused, since Cryptic has been primarily Atari's MMO sweatshop. Their involvement would suggest some type of online, fee based, instanced up the ass infrastructure.

@AfroWalrus

I'm thinking they distilled it down to five since 4th-edition's classes have a lot of overlap when thought about from a "videogame mechanics" perspective.

Hell yeah. I loved the other Neverwinter games, and if this one is based on 4E, I'll pre-order.

Wow. And people complained about Obsidian's sequel being buggy? Wait until they get a load of Cryptic's attempt.

Even if they overlook the shoddy production they'll still have to weigh their need for microtransaction content, which is to say most of the content made despite a certain monthly fee presumably entitling us to all of it.

I really wish I had been more patient with their City of Heroes game (quit at lv 20) but my attempt to remedy that with Champions Online and Star Trek Online have only made things worse.

This is going to be another Baldur's gate: Dark Alliance thing, isn't it?

Probably closer to BGDA 2.

Sigh, the bane of 4th edition crud is finally coming. Now I know how the old 2nd edition players felt about us 3rd edition players.

It's done by Cryptic so it will have ridiculous levels of character customization but no content.

The only thing that sounds reasonably interesting is the bit about making your own quests and stories. I wonder how in depth that will all be. Would be cool if it came close to replicating the Pen and Paper feeling of having a GM and stories and scenarios for a close group of friends... then I think that this could be a big hit.

@Nitex; NWN1+2 had Persistent Worlds, this is seemingly more like Guild Wars in that it's An-MMO-Sort-Of-But-Not-So-Yeah-Let's-Call-It-An-OMG.

Which ruleset are they planning on using?

I'd like to see a Stratgey turn based RPG (like FF tactics) using the 4.0 system....

I never played BGDA2, tbh, I hated the first game so much I didn't want anything to do with the second. It just seemed like an uninspired hack and slash with too few levels.
So now I ask, was the second lightyears better than the first?

Okay, cool. The MMO engine Cryptic uses is quite good--they just have problems getting content and balance right. Hope this works, and they keep adding content to Champions Online. I'm looking forward to this development too.

I don't know what lightyears means but at least BGDA 1 was trying something different, the sequel, along with Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, pretty much cemented the death of Black Isle Studios.

I think of Dark Alliance 1 as the "Survivor" of videogames. It was interesting and fun, but it also ruined video games / television. Worth it? Fuck no.

Neverwinter Nights 2 was nothing like the first one, and this one looks even more far away from the franchise's past glory. I am sorely disappointed.

I don't understand why it's a single word. Neverwinter Nights sounds like more than one person. Hell, even the 2 implies something.

In any regard, this should be good. This series changes every game, but always remains quality.

Still no word about what kind of game it will be.

Obviously that means it's going to be a third-person turn-based tower defense with cover mechanics and no reference to actual Dungeons and Dragons mechanics beyond iconic spells like "magic missile".

This would be very cool if the characters had more classes and were customizable.

I'd like something MMORPGish but limited to playtime with IRL bros. I hate most MMORPG communities because it seems you can never weed out people under 18 effectively. Even then, there's no guarantee that a 20 year old is going to have the emotional intelligence of a 20 year old.

Uggg. There's a 4E style tiefling in the shot. That means Neverwinter 4E. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Is the guy with the axe one of those goliath/half giant dudes from the new Players manual?

Oh well. It's coop and limited classes so that means it's Diablo 2 or Gauntlet inspired.

Neverwinter is the name of a city on the Sword Coast in the D&D Forgotten Realms setting. It's ruled by Lord Nasher. It's usually fighting the pirate/wizard city of Luskan for some odd reason.

@HombreGato

"Wow. And people complained about Obsidian's sequel being buggy? Wait until they get a load of Cryptic's attempt."

What's kind of humorous is that Neverwinter Nights 1 was equally as buggy on release but everyone keeps forgetting that because they're looking at through Bioware goggles.

Was it? I don't remember having troubles (certainly not on part with the Amie Fern lives bug in NWN2) but then again I didn't make it very far. Cleared a couple districts and realized there really wasn't much happening in that game. With only one NPC on my side without much of a story, and a lot of sidequests seeming totally disconnected to what I was trying to accomplish.

@triclops41
agreed. NWN1>NWN2

I only wish I had taken the time to learn the modding tools.

In an interview given about the new NWN title JE made the following comment:

"we made City of Heroes in about a year and a half, City of Villains in nine months. We made Champions in two years and STO in a year and a half, so we're an incredibly efficient studio, you obviously know -- there's no one in the industry that's as prolific as we are, it's not even close."

Woozers!!! I would not be braggin' about that shit to be frank; especially STO and to a lessor degree CO. It is exactly because of that the company is looked at so negatively by gamers. Prolific piles of hot steamy shit wrapped in silk coverings is still shit once one digs their hands into things. He should have talked about how they are implementing the new development "philosophy" into their existing titles.
