Bioware isn’t opposed to the idea of adding a cooperative element to later Dragon Age and Mass Effect games.
In a recent interview, part lord and master of the RPG stronghold, Dr. Ray Muzyka, told Video Gamer that Bioware would “consider” cooperative play in the said future titles, citing that they’ve done it before in other games and continue to do so with Star Wars: The Old Republic.
“Sure, we would consider it,” Dr. Muzyka said. “We haven’t announced anything on that front yet, but those are interesting ideas. They could make a great gameplay experience. Whether we’ll do them or not remains to be decided.”
Muzyka continued, stating that it’s not easy to “weave” single-player and multiplayer experiences, but its “not impossible.”
“We’ve done it, and we’re doing it again now in Star Wars: The Old Republic. But it is challenging,” he said.
More challenging than bringing down a dragon in Dragon Age: Origins, for sure, but I think the game would have benefitted -- or at least I would have -- from drop in- and drop out-style cooperative action. The game had me begging for another person towards the latter quarter of its experience.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
The issues I'd see with it are:
* How can the P2 add to the story? Can playing without them be fulfilling for one player and with them fulfilling for both?
* Would they be an NPC, their own character or a new character they'd have to make for co-op?
* As a lot of dialogue is used, should P2 be able to influence it and how? And if not, what do they do during all the lengthy dialogue scenes?
There's a lot of potential sacrifice to story when you make something multiplayer. I can't see Silent Hill being as effective if you're not going through it alone. Co-op shouldn't be added to everything lightly, despite co-op being awesome. As long as it doesn't diminish from the game or the story, then that's fine.
That said, Mass Effect is more a shooter with RPG elements, and it could work there on some level maybe.
Adding multiplayer may be the new fad, but I'd rather it not be done just because its popular in the market.
Blizzard's strength lies in getting the multiplayer experience down to the point where that alone can carry its game for years.
BioWare's strength lies in getting the single-player experience down to the point where its story and sense of immersion alone can carry its game for years.
Any attempt to ape the other guy just looks desperate.
it works quite well, specially with a builder were custom content can be built around the idea of multiple players
@ StingingVelvet
You could do co-op in many "Tales of" games (far from my favorite series, but it did have co-op), and it didn't change the story at all. It didn't change the mechanics at all. It was just "Oh, you have a second player - they get to control one of your CPU allies."
Demon's Souls is another example of co-op within a single-player RPG done right. Granted, there wasn't much of a story to muck up in the first place, but even if there was a story, it wouldn't have been harmed by having some summoned phantoms help you out for a little bit.
@ bagalot
Make Player One the only 'acknowledged' character. Player Two, as far as the story is concerned, doesn't exist. Player Two is only along for the ride.
