Co-op may be a threat in future Mass Effect and DA titles photo

Bioware isn’t opposed to the idea of adding a cooperative element to later Dragon Age and Mass Effect games.

In a recent interview, part lord and master of the RPG stronghold, Dr. Ray Muzyka, told Video Gamer that Bioware would “consider” cooperative play in the said future titles, citing that they’ve done it before in other games and continue to do so with Star Wars: The Old Republic.

“Sure, we would consider it,” Dr. Muzyka said. “We haven’t announced anything on that front yet, but those are interesting ideas. They could make a great gameplay experience. Whether we’ll do them or not remains to be decided.”

Muzyka continued, stating that it’s not easy to “weave” single-player and multiplayer experiences, but its “not impossible.”

“We’ve done it, and we’re doing it again now in Star Wars: The Old Republic. But it is challenging,” he said.

More challenging than bringing down a dragon in Dragon Age: Origins, for sure, but I think the game would have benefitted -- or at least I would have -- from drop in- and drop out-style cooperative action. The game had me begging for another person towards the latter quarter of its experience.

Yeah, I can see it in Dragon Age - "FFS, get on the right angle before using that Cone of Cold!"

I would adore this.

If done right, this would be very good. Previous Bioware games have certainly had this, all the way back to Baldurs Gate. NWN had multiplayer as well, so I could certainly see this working well. Just as long as they work at it, and don't just shoehorn it in.

The only problem with this is how to do it. In the Baldur's Gate series, having a second player character made them take up an NPC slot (slowing/stopping progression with NPCs and their plots), not allowing them part in the dialogue options and having them as effectively the NPC without any character.
The issues I'd see with it are:
* How can the P2 add to the story? Can playing without them be fulfilling for one player and with them fulfilling for both?
* Would they be an NPC, their own character or a new character they'd have to make for co-op?
* As a lot of dialogue is used, should P2 be able to influence it and how? And if not, what do they do during all the lengthy dialogue scenes?

There's a lot of potential sacrifice to story when you make something multiplayer. I can't see Silent Hill being as effective if you're not going through it alone. Co-op shouldn't be added to everything lightly, despite co-op being awesome. As long as it doesn't diminish from the game or the story, then that's fine.

As long as the co-op doesn't impair the single player experience in any way then it's all good.

You can't add coop without fundementally changing the solo experience... Resident Evil 5 is a good example... so as a fan of solo RPGs with great stories, I say thee NAY.

That said, Mass Effect is more a shooter with RPG elements, and it could work there on some level maybe.

I totally got a "MMO without the players" feel from Dragon Age. I could use having another player control one of my guys. Not to mention in Dragon Age you have your party members chiming in their opinions on a lot of decisions. If they could implement something like that into a co-op game, I'd buy it two times. I get dibs on Sten though, so I can be a douche about everything.

As long as it's done Halo-style as opposed to Resident Evil 5 style.

I second Charlie X. There's a reason RPGs and other heavily story-based games are single player. Crafting a story that doesn't leave one of two players on the sideline but can also be satisfying for a single player is a mighty task. It would require all NPCs to acknowledge two heroes as well as one, react accordingly, and a dialogue system where both players were somehow able to participate without screwing each other out of the choice experience in the process.

Adding multiplayer may be the new fad, but I'd rather it not be done just because its popular in the market.

A buddy and I were having a discussion about this at my local bar of choice this weekend:

Blizzard's strength lies in getting the multiplayer experience down to the point where that alone can carry its game for years.

BioWare's strength lies in getting the single-player experience down to the point where its story and sense of immersion alone can carry its game for years.

Any attempt to ape the other guy just looks desperate.

Co-op would ruin DAO on the PC as it is, but it would be fun as hell on consoles. Of course I may be bias because most of my friends are fucking retards when it comes to anything more than point and clicks.

Think of a consisted Mass Effect World...you have you fixed squad just like a guild. Everyone plays a specific character role for the whole game...but can make his own decisions...HIRE ME BIOWARE!!!

The only way it would work in DA as it stands right now is if every character is player controlled. Otherwise, you have everyone in a party getting their action paused every few seconds while the host gives orders to the bots. Not much fun to be had there. But a party of 4 player controlled characters would be pimped out.

it works quite well, specially with a builder were custom content can be built around the idea of multiple players

The title should read "Co-op may be a threat in future Mass Effect and GOTY titles".

I'm all for co-op games. I have bought many sub-par games simply because they allow me to play them alongside a friend.

@ StingingVelvet
You could do co-op in many "Tales of" games (far from my favorite series, but it did have co-op), and it didn't change the story at all. It didn't change the mechanics at all. It was just "Oh, you have a second player - they get to control one of your CPU allies."

Demon's Souls is another example of co-op within a single-player RPG done right. Granted, there wasn't much of a story to muck up in the first place, but even if there was a story, it wouldn't have been harmed by having some summoned phantoms help you out for a little bit.

@ bagalot
Make Player One the only 'acknowledged' character. Player Two, as far as the story is concerned, doesn't exist. Player Two is only along for the ride.

I pause too much to play Dragon Age in co-op, but I don't use tactics. Good tactics would definitely help make any co-op smoother though, like they can make the single player smoother. Maybe on a lower difficulty setting.
