You heard it here first. CNN has somehow managed to build a time machine that allows them to travel into the past. That's the only possible explanation for why they seem to think it's still 2009 and that RapeLay is news. It's certainly not because they are completely out of touch with this subject matter or anything. No sir.
To the credit of the news agency, at least some attempt to present multiple perspectives on the subject was made. There's a pair of British gamers on there who seem perfectly reasonable human beings who express a viewpoint of non-censorship and a representative of a women's group who wants Japan to ban the making of these games.
Even still, there's really no excuse for drumming up this controversy now, almost a year after it happened, suggesting that it's a new thing somehow.

Dtoid seems to be using their own time machine that ocasionally shows up, causing them to fall far, sometimes days, behind other sites in most News posts.
Or taking several months to send out prizes to Contest winners. Ahem...
This is disgusting...but its also Japan. I can't imagine these games being popular here in the State. Except for you know..the creepy guy in the pantry.
As long as there's a mouse, a monitor, and avatar in the mix... what's the big deal?
These are completely niche games, there's no way you'd come across them in your local game store or even a search engine unless you were really looking for it. Out of sight, out of mind.
Novels are more graphic than poorly animated pixels. Hell, movies and shows use actual people - why not ban a Clockwork Orange and such?
Do these people need to be reminded of a little game called Night Trap for the Sega CD?

Friggin A! Why does every news show talk about these "things"? I haven't heard of this "LapeRay" until now.......woe is my fragile little mind! CNN causes kids like me to go dumb!!!
Yeah, my first thought when I heard CNN had done a story about this was pretty much the sentiment Conrad expresses here. I mean, really? It's been so long since the whole RapeLay thing was news that it just makes me tired to see someone bringing it up again. I guess it must have been a very, very slow news day...
In other similar news, Hot Coffee is paying out to the class actions calimers. $5-$35 for being offended by hard to find hack uncover-y of commented out code!
Meanwhile No Russian happened, and no one freaked out...
@BrickRoadDX
I don't know if it's worse, but it's certainly more disturbing for a lot of people. Killing a human is, in many cases, justifiable for most people (self-defense, some people would say in times of war). For most people, rape is never justifiable.
Censorship is a bigger evil than a rape game, the problem isn't game-makers, it's consumers, people just needs more effective psychiatric professionals. Anyone who thinks this should be censored is a fascist, but I will defend their right to say their opinion.
anyway, hilarious things about the story.
1. how do they know that the game just continues raping, they would only know if they played the entire game, which is hilarious.
2. they couldn't show the rape footage, so they showed the non-rape footage with the rape sound-effects overtop, because they really want you to hear that shit.
3. they filmed the LCD screen image of the apple built-in camera of her, why not just use a skype call recorder program to record both camera feeds and edit them together, in addition to the regular camera watching her on skype, acknowledging that she is doing this over skype.
Earth to CNN: Japan's been doing rape fantasy crap for years. Where the hell have you been?
While it's disgusting, you can't really think that this kind of sensationalistic report is going to bring about it's end, do you? All you've successly done is let other perverts know of it's existence. Congratulations on showing where un-informed suburban-zombies (seriously, who the hell watches CNN? It's like Fox news round-the-clock) can gain access this kind of stuff. *facepalm*
I'm not ranting so much as I am loling at CNN's fail.
Ya know, this game NEVER had any publicity & most Japanese people, let alone ANYONE IN THE WORLD, never even HEARD of the game, let alone of the company that made it. & then what happens? One person discovers it 2 YEARS LATER & goes ballistic over it.
Also, there's no way to win the game, HAD THEY PLAYED IT & FOUND OUT. There's only 2 endings. You either get stabbed by the older sister (as I recall reading) or get hit by a train. Doesn't that show that there's consequences? LIKE DEATH?
Also, how the hell did they JUST find this out? No, I wanna know how the hell they even DISCOVERED the game in the 1st place. This huge controversy NEVER would've happened if they just let an (VERY) obscure game stay obscure.
Doesn't Japan already have laws against Rape in games now? The whole 'nobody from the japanese government responded' bit was kinda lol, I bet CNN didn't try corresponding in say, Japanese to get in contact.
I murder people in videogames all the time. Seriously. ALL THE TIME. I'd venture to guess that about 98% of gamers do. If I'm pissed off, I have digital killing or fighting that works as an outlet.
If some guy gets off on raping people in videogames, more power to him. If he can get his fix from raping girl-shaped polygons, then maybe he won't rape real girls. And that's a massive plus in my book. I'm sure some unlucky bastards out there can't get it up without rape fantasies being played out, and rape fiction works well to give them a (relatively) healthy outlet.
And there is no evidence that rape games promote rape in any way. In fact, look at Japan's crime rates. They have to be doing something right.
They say this, but they had to get a copy, meaning they bought it and played it, which pretty much means they support it.
Also the fact they had to webcam somebody in ENGLAND to make a comment is pretty freaking hilarious.
Ah well.
Kinda. There is an "Anti-rape Game" law, but it's barely enforced. The law essentially exists to get Americans to STFU. Basically, the changes since that law came out are:
1) Many doujin and eroge software groups refuse to export games
2) Many game developers use code words that denote that rape is in the game without directly saying it.
3) In one case there was a developer who used a disclaimer saying, "All characters in this game are digital actors specially trained to make it appear that they are being raped, but in reality, everything is consensual and entirely fake, so please don't take things so seriously"
Not sure if you guys have been following anything going on in Japan like I have.... Ok, I'll take that as a no but a ban has already been shot down for loli in all forms. Yes, a pure lolicon ban has been put up and denied to live. Now, they are still trying to get it passed but we will see on that. Maybe CNN should pick that story about lolis and go to Akihabara and uncover all that dirty dirty loli porn, games, hug pillows, god knows what. Really, this crap is moot I just laugh at people when they bring it up.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

You missed a spot...
And the question, "Did you feel offended as a woman?"... Way to promote unintelligent reactionary thinking, lady.
CNN wants your brains banned from generating thought..*
stupid CNN
Oh man, I laughed way more then I should have at that.
Meanwhile No Russian happened, and no one freaked out...
...so who wants to JPG, eh?
I don't know, maybe they've got one of those slow news days.
Also, rape games, hentai and vending machines that sell used panties are all things that make Nippon great! We cant get rid of them!
If I'm ever lucky enough to visit Japan, I shall buy a rape game in support of the country's freedom of speech*.

The last one is my favorite solution.
But wow, what a ridiculous article.
Custer's Revenge, much?
I fucking hate the American news media, "what's a pointless story about something offensive we can use to fill time and outrage losers?"
