Cliffy B wants Avatar movie quality graphics for games photo

Cliff Bleszinski, Gears of War creator and lover of blue aliens, isn't fully satisfied with game graphics today. They're good, but they're not Avatar good, right?

"I'm sorry, do you think graphics are good enough?" Bleszinski asked OXM in an interview. "No they're not! The Xbox 360 is great, we've pushed it further than we ever have with Gears of War 3, but I want 'Avatar' in real-time and beyond."

Woah. It sounds like Cliffy B has his Na'vi plugs in a tangle. But I get it. He wants our jaws to drop with games, much like they did when we first saw Avatar

"Do graphics make gameplay? No. But when I fire up my projector back at my house, put Avatar on - it still makes your jaw drop, it's like a giant portal to another planet. I think we still have a long way to go before we get there, and I want us to get there."

Cliff wants fully realistic CG for games. Do you want that in your games, though? Do you want perfect realism? Are you banking on a Na'vi plug interface for the Xbox 720?

Mr B has a point here. When you look at the 30 and the PS3, they're six to seven year old hardware. We've been pushing them as absolutely far as we can, pulling tricks and such to make the games looks better than they should and there's almost *zero* headroom. Not just for graphics, mind you, but also for gameplay. These systems are running at full capacity, and we need new hardware to free up room. So many current games are being limited by what the lowest common denominator (the consoles) can pul off.

Code for the 360 looking like shit, then? Yeah, hurry up with the next gen consoles already.

Gears 3 is beautiful. People saying this generation is dead already have no idea what they are talking about. Sure I want the next Xbox, but to play a game like Gears 3 and then say there is no life in the system is just dumb.

I want games to look better than real life, so we look at reality and wish it would look more like Gears of War 5

I don't want that, I want game companies to be able to make great games in less than a lifetime for less than one Scrooge McDuck Money Bin. Unless Unreal Engine 4 will conjure all the graphics from the ether so the developers can focus on all the fun bits.

I want this in theory, but considering the massive financial investment that current-gen games require to look decent, will there be more than a small handful of studios capable of creating games that hit this mark? And how many millions would a game like that have to sell just to break even?

As long as he doesn't mean all flash and no substance with future games, yeah, sure. Better graphics all the way (as long as better doesn't doesn't equate to half the campaign).

At a certain point we will advance so far that graphics will revert to minimalist Pong and we will start the entire cycle all over again.

Either that, or we will all just sit in bed all day, wearing a visor that simulates real life so we don't actually have to go outside and do any of it. The visor will come with exciting software like 'Depositing Your Paycheck' and 'Shopping: Sale on Isle 5.' Because what's more real than that?

As much as I'd love super realistic graphics, I don't want to pay for it. Simple as that. So unless all future games & systems will be the same price as they are now (with inflation added of course), then I'll stick with "good enough".

I was very, very young at the time but Turok 2 looked like real life to my overly imaginative little self, it was terrifying!

I think we should be pushing tech at a reasonable rate and as far as I'm concerned the 360 has had its run. Move over for something new, please!

Don't forget if you buy 'Shopping: Sale on Isle 5' brand new, you get exclusive access to the 'Everyday Items Pack' which includes extra items like milk, cereal, butter, toilet paper, soap and shampoo for the store.

Yeah, Gears 3 looks fantastic on the 360. But it could have looked so much better on the PC. Bulletstorm on the PC makes Gears 3 look pretty mediocre. Consoles badly need an upgrade.

The best thing Cliffy can do if he wants to put out better graphics is start developing more stuff for the PC and helping push some of that tech Epic was showing off last year. I'm ready for a game that looks like that damn Samaritan demo. That was pretty amazing.

Avatar wasn't even that great, it's looks are the only thing that makes it special. It would be nice for games to look that great, but they look fine now so that isn't really necessary. People who want to move on to next gen consoles for graphics are doing it wrong.

That isn't the real issue though, the real issue is will Cliffy B's next game muscular blue people? That would be pretty hot and innovative.

@TheNephilym:
I think we still have a ways to go before games look like the Samaritan video, even in the PC world. I believe that was running on an extremely high end quad SLI setup.

Why are so many people in such a rush for the next gen? Current games are great! What’s the worst looking current gen game? Fallout? I can live with that.

Actually no, Fallout could use some serious touching up, but still, developers might want the next gen consoles to come around already but gamers aren’t ready to drop all that cash again while we have one-two years of mediocre games while they try to figure the system out.

And art style will always trump graphical power anyway.

It was. And I agree. I just think that the sooner we drop the old tech, the sooner we'll be able to start working towards making games that look like Samaritan and play on modest machines. A man can dream.

I love how CliffyB doesn't acknowledge PC graphics in this. Just the 360.

PCs are far more capable of better graphics. Not Avatar-quality, but unless you have a farm of 100 servers with quad-core, top-end server-grade CPUs you're not going to get Avatar-quality graphics nowadays or in the next 10 or so years. Maybe something similar in 5 years but with plenty of compromises.

In any case, he sticks by his outdated console while yearning for something another platform supports now, but instead he chooses to disregard that platform and even curse it. Right now he's basically just publicly askIng Microsoft to make a better console. Rather than doing the sane thing as a game designer and looking for the best medium to realise your designs, he's just sitting there and waiting for one outdated platform to refresh.

And before anyone says we have something close and it's called the Samaritan demo, no. That is called compromising. Lighting is done on a more linear scale, environments are much smaller (the entire demo took place in one, dark, outside metro area) and all that required an insanely high-end setup. I agree, Samaritan is beautiful and possibly the best graphics on the PC gaming market nowadays, but it was also misleading as a tech demo, due to the above reasons.

How about we start on the little things like having games actually be in real 720p? Or having games with consistent a frame rate be the norm.
