i can understand that - the only negative thing i heard of is uneven campaign, but when you see mediocre crap like Killzone 3 getting 9s and 10s for atrocious and short campaign and shallow multiplayer. then we've got Gears of War 3 with long and good campaign, loads of content. seriously 10-12hour long campaign of Gears of War is longer than both terrible campaigns from both KZ games combined - both of them felt like they've been made by kid with ADHD.
When VG247 pressed Mr. Bleszinski to explain why he was getting so defensive, he put his fingers in his ears and stated "NA NA CANT HEAR YOU. TITTIES. TITTIES. TITTIES"
Gears 3 might be better than Gears 2 in every way, but if Gears 2 were reviewed today, it wouldn't get more than an 8/10.

I actually tend to gravitate towards 7 or 8 out of ten games. 9 & 10's tend to carry the stain of personal bias a little TOO much.

This is stupid, I wonder if someone will give Gears a REALLY low score, and what would happen then, 8 is an excellent score, just because a lot of people think the game is a 10/10 it doesn't mean it actually is
It is kind of disappointing. The whole "5 years ago, game X scored better than game Y, which was just released" statement is just dumb... the kind of argument I would expect from angsty teenagers with a lot of internet self entitlement; not from a grown up man who knows full well about how the industry works.

Amazing. It makes sense to complain when one of the best of the genre (Tactics Ogre PSP) gets a 5 out of 10... but this is just absolute nonsense.
@IdlePye - That's the fault of other reviewers who are in bed with publishers for ad dollars. It's a very bad habit they've gotten into, giving average games a 7-8 and everything that has a AAA budget 9 or 10. If publishers don't like it when someone adheres to the REAL 1-10 scale, that's too damn bad.
Yeah, the actual article was much more interesting than this. It gave a lot of insight into where the man wants to take games, including more social integration. "Haters" may ruffle some feathers, but in context, that felt more like an off-the-cuff expression of his disappointment in the end of the trilogy not being received as its brightest moment than sincere bile. It was more of the boisterous frontman that Cliffy, not bitter resent.

I can see where he is coming from. Their team put more work into this game, and have added so many more features than the leap from the first game to the sequel. This is the better game, and it is getting lower review scores. Obviously though the reviews are just the opinions of those writing them, so you have to take them with a grain of salt.
I do find it odd though that Destructoid scored the game at an 8, and then also scored Dead Island with a 7. The strange part is the review of Dead Island had so many more complaints and negatives when looking at the Gears of War 3 review that the scores should have been separated by more than 1 point.

Ratings are supposed to be unbiased and that includes ignoring any personal or production background informationor history. You can aim for a ten, but you should never expect it.
I like that Jim's own opinions colour and inform his reviews. It's a subjective take on something and the written part of his reviews are always excellent, and even if I don't always agree with his final score on a game I can always see why he scored it that way. At this stage I think I know his tastes and personality better than other reviewers simply because his review style is so personal.
I loved FFXIII and Jim hated it, he loved Killzone 3 and I thought it was nothing more than a decent but forgettable shooter. I didn't feel the need to act like a complete moron like some others who post here. People need to grow up and not make fools of themselves.

As a dude who's only got a PS3, the Gears review is entirely irrelevant to me. That said, this post seems a bit self-indulgent. I don't think your reviews necessarily invite controversy, but posts like this (where you seem to want to fuel a feud) certainly do. I like what you do, Jim, and I think you're better than this.
I'd be upset too. Gears 2 was a solid 9/10 and Gears 3 seems to be everything but better, so yeah, if that is true then I would be upset that my previous game scored better too.

While I think its a bit lame for him to comment publicly on it, I can understand him being a little disappointed. As some have mentioned it is something he and the team at Epic have poured a ton of work into. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to playing the game! I just need to finish R3 and Deus Ex first!

I've often said to myself that there is almost no way that forty or fifty review outlets all honestly think a certain game is perfect (I mean, it happens a few times a year with movies, but it happens unbelievably often with games), and comments like Cliffy B's lead me to believe that a lot of reviewers don't really believe that these games warrant perfect scores, but are afraid to say otherwise. This turns me off from game "journalism" and, unfortunately, these big-budget games themselves, even if they are actually great games. Anyway, it's just good to know there is still somewhere to go for honest opinions.
