With any other videogame, scoring an 8/10 would be considered glowing praise. According to Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski, however, that couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, according to him, anybody who dares give Gears of War 3 a score of eight clearly hates it.
"Doing great, apart from a couple of haters," Cliffy told VG247, while talking about review scores. When asked to elaborate on the haters in question, he pointed to Eurogamer's 8/10 review.
"You know, I didn’t quite gather it. I don’t want to come across as defensive," he defensively said. "How do I phrase this properly? When people rated Gear 2 higher than Gears 3, it kind of upset me because I know Gears 3 is a better game on every level."
An 8/10 review for any game should be considered a compliment, and for a developer to complain about that is to take somebody's compliment and toss it back in their face. I find that unbelievably vulgar, and have to say that I am a little disappointed that a man who is currently swimming in perfect review scores is getting upset because he didn't get just a handful more. The sheer spoiled greed of that attitude is staggering.
I just recently wrote an article about how certain games are assumed to have a divine right to certain scores, and I'm pretty sad that Bleszinski is actively encouraging such an insipid attitude. I wish I could understand how someone gets so overwhelmingly entitled.

Frankly, if I was Cliffy, I'd find some of that pretty insulting on a personal level. Cocksure and combative? Thrives on the limelight? Forcibly occupied? Even I kinda wanna punch whoever wrote that in the face.
Point being, I don't know if that's what he was talking about or not, but it seems plausible and it's very understandable. There's room for benefit of the doubt here.
Throwing around terms like, "insipid" doesn't make you sound intelligent or impressive to anybody here.
The point is, it doesn't matter how much of his life Cliff put into Gears 3. That doesn't suddenly make people not entitled to their opinion. Jim's review (this coming from an avid Gears of War fan) was concise, well written, and fair. He gave it a GREAT score that anybody would be proud of.

I do find it odd though that Destructoid scored the game at an 8, and then also scored Dead Island with a 7. The strange part is the review of Dead Island had so many more complaints and negatives when looking at the Gears of War 3 review that the scores should have been separated by more than 1 point.
I loved FFXIII and Jim hated it, he loved Killzone 3 and I thought it was nothing more than a decent but forgettable shooter. I didn't feel the need to act like a complete moron like some others who post here. People need to grow up and not make fools of themselves.
As for CliffyB: Once you release the game you have to accept that people will have divergent opinions on it. It's childish to think you can protect it after it's out there. My immediate reaction to comments like this from devs is to wonder will they screw over outlets who don't give them the review scores they demand in the future?
