Cliffy B thinks a beta is a casual f*ck photo

I'm not sure exactly what Gears of War 2 designer Cliff Bleszinski has been taught about women, but according to him, videogame betas are like scoring with a girl and then throwing her away. Do you not follow? Allow Clifford to explain:

"A beta is like hooking up with a girl just to say, 'Yeah, I fucked her.' I know that sounds crude, but it’s the honest-to-God truth. Once you play a beta, you can check it off your list - you can say, 'Yeah, I played it.' Then you might not feel motivated to get that initial cherry popping from the proper, final game."

I personally don't know any men who check women off their "list" after a quick shag, but that's usually because I don't hang around with douchebags. Still, that's an odd analogy being employed to make a suggestion that actually has some merit. Of course, a good beta will make the player want to come back for the full product, just like a woman who won't take it up the arse on the first night. Jesus, now he's got me making sexist metaphors.

As for demos, Bleszinski is equally as contemptuous, stating that we wouldn't have had Gears 2 "until February of 2009" if Epic had spent time pulling one together. He had no sex-based reference to make for that subject.

It seems Cliffy has a lot to say today, along with the "Mirrors edge needs more guns" comment.

Cherry popping references aside I think there's numbers that support what he's saying though. Games that have demos or betas instead of just trailers seem to take a hit in sales. I think if the demo/beta is anything short of amazing it may work against the game.

COD:WaW? Yeah I played it. Stripped off the buy list now. People are total whores for betas, especially in gamer communities. A beta might be a good way to promote your game if it's a lot better than people were expecting in terms of hype and marketing though.

Knowing that there are guys that will get the reference says nothing about having to hang out with douchebags or being one yourself btw :)

Cliffy Blezzy has popped many a cherry in his day.

Anywho, isn't that what demos are for anyway?

Also, if it is a demo then they should be careful not to put out a demo that shows shit. But if its a beta then they should be careful to release a demo after they FIXED shit from the beta. So that people know they fixed the sucky parts of the game so they feel safe in buying it.

People just need to distinguish between beta and demo.

I wouldn't have bought the abomination that is Pain, if I had a demo or a beta, so yeah, I guess he is right. But pain is so bad, that I'd hide the fact that I f*cked Pain, I mean, played Pain. Don't buy Pain, or it's add-ons.

I am Emrah, and I approve this message.

God dammit! Quick! Someone hide that quote before the rest of the world sees it! Hopefully they'll understand that he's just a representation of the douchebags and not gamers.

Well now Cliffy B is higher on my hit list than Uwe Boll...

Also, I remember playing WoW when the first beta came out. I still bought the game after that. But that was because I was addicted. O_O;

Goddammit, (part of the) Destructoid community. We're really going to criticize Cliffy for making a crass sexual analogy? THAT'S WHAT WE DO! Also, Jim, you can't honestly tell me you've never encountered guys like the ones he mentioned. I think most of us have.

Anyway, he's kind of right. The WaW beta got me interested in the game, but I pretty much got my fill of playing it for a while.

The more I hear about Cliffy B the more he sounds like a douchebag.

@ Neiro:
I can see your concern for demos and betas potentially hurting the overall sales of a game, but I think most people who are satisfied with playing just the demo are just looking for some casual fun. For me, it helps me test the game and see if I like it. I'm glad Mirror's Edge has a demo available because I probably wouldn't buy it unless I have the chance to try it out for myself.

I don't support rental stores and I would rather not plunk down ten bucks to try a game out for three days if it has a demo available online. The benefit with demos and betas is that I basically get for free what Blockbuster and Videotron offer for eight to ten bucks.

I wish more games had demos/betas available actually, because I have a few shit games that I wish I never payed the money for. Doing this helps me sift through the shit that developers are releasing these days.

Also, XBLA offers demos for their arcade games. I bet less people would have bought Braid or Castle Crashers if the demos weren't released, seeing how they were the most expensive XBLA games of the summer.

Yeah, I've never bought a game based on a demo, but I've definitely not bought a game based on a demo.

But, wow, Cliff. Way to perpetuate that kinda chauvinist speak. Even if I wanted your game, I would want it less now. Cheers.

I wasn't even considering getting Resistance 2 until I tried the beta, which I just signed up for the hell of it. So in some causes betas/demos work. And in other cases...*remembers all his DC demo discs*...eh not so much.

But I did end up buying a ton of Dreamcast games but that wasn't till after Sega dropped out of the console business and all the games became cheap.

Brillliam I agree. The guy may make a great game. He also does a great job of perpetuating the juvenile immaturity stigma all gamers are stereotyped with. Now when I hear his name I'll associate him not only with GOW but with being a sleezbag. Way to go "Cliffy"

I'm kind of offended by Cliff's remark. His attiude reflects gamers to a certain degree, and honestly we don't need this person representing us.

A lot of us gamers get laughed at, even ridiculed by women for being gamers. I've dated women that would leave my house if I was going to play a video game with a friend. And it's not because we wouldn't let her play.. (my current lover loves it when I ask her to play video games with me.. she hearts LBP) it's because she "Hated Games".

Now we have this piggish guy making statements about how he would "screw a woman just so he could say he did" WTF, like that's going to get any gamers some points for being polite, considerate and preferable company. I was never a gears fan.. and after that statement.. guess who's telling his friends to "not buy". Another note about this statement comes to mind... "Hey, Cliff.. Were you getting mega laid when you weren't a game designer?"

Oh and should I mention that GoW 2 has a TOY gun made for it? O_o That will get you some points with the opposite sex!!

Something tells me the amount of females that at one time liked gears of war will probably never buy a game that has his name attached to it. Especially after that comment.

Nowadays, "beta" just means "exclusive demo." It makes the user feel extra special that they "got in" this special special demo. You're oh so special that you have an email address that lets you into this exclusive special club.

So instead of scoring with an easy chick, you score with an easy chick that presents herself as hard to get.

Yeah, because obviously gamers aren't into random drunken one-night stands.

Its a weird analogy to use, but its more representative of our society in general than gamers.

It allows people to try something before they buy it, like a demo. I don't mind it. I don't see the problem. As much as I love Gears 2, Cliff needs to quiet down sometimes. He's starting to act like Miyamoto.

Meh, I see where he was trying to take that but it's just a really bad analogy. It's like one of those bad jokes you would tell a bunch of guy friends when you're all drunk, not something you would say as a representative for your company in an interview.

Lack of professionalism.

I think a much more apt (and PC) analogy in the same vein would be that a beta is like a first date. It could either be amazing or a disaster, but after diving in you know whether it's something worth revisiting and what you need to focus on to make it work in the long run. Every relationship needs some load testing before you know it's solid.

I've gone on to play every good beta I have played for a long time after release, and I've completely given up on games that weren't beta tested well enough.

Cliffy B needs to realize that everything he says on the record now is going to be reported upon and picked apart. I've known he was a bit of a douche since he made some generalizations about the kind of music XBox players liked a few years back. The games he works on may be cool, but he tries too hard to be cool and fails.
