Cliffy B: the current PC model is broken photo

When one hears the name Cliffy B, the words Gears of War are most likely to follow it up -- and you really can't fault anyone for that association. After all, Gears was the first game that truly showed us that we had finally reached the next-generation. It sent message boards afire, and to say that it had each of us in awe is a gross understatement.

However, even as popular as Gears still is to this very day, both Epic and Cliffy B have been forever cemented in the minds of many gamers as PC developers first and foremost -- thanks to Unreal Tournament. That's why Cliffy may have caused some ire among dedicated PC gamers during an interview with MTV's multiplayer blog:

"I think people would rather make a game that sells 4.5 million copies than a million and Gears is at 4.5 million right now on the 360. I think the PC is just in disarray... What's driving the PC right now is Sims-type games and WoW and a lot of stuff that's in a web-based interface. You just click on it and play it. That's the direction PC is evolving into. So for me, the PC is kind of the secondary part of what we're doing. It's important for us, but right now making AAA games on consoles is where we're at."
Take a long, hard look at the state of PC gaming today, and tell me if you agree with him. When was the last time you were really excited about a game that didn't fit the mold that Cliffy just described? Fault him if you may for commenting about the numbers, but at the end of the day, Epic is first and foremost a business. Is PC gaming dead? Obviously not, but you cannot ignore the fact that consoles have streamlined the whole process, making it arguably a more enjoyable experience. So trace it back and tell us, fellow Destructoids...what exactly went wrong along the way?

Maybe PC is slowly going the way of Old Yeller in the States, but not in most of East/S. East Asia. I've lived in Thailand, S. Korea, and now China...and PC gaming is more popular there than console gaming. It's cheaper to pay 50 cents an hour(China and Thailand....$1 in Korea) to rent a computer and be semi-sociable in a PC Bar than it is to purchase a next gen console and pay monthly for internet (or Xbox LIVE)

Heck, look at Starcraft in Korea? It's like their national sport.

I'm with Mr Lazy on this one. Many games designed for PC are done so first with graphics over gameplay. This is a shame, because if there's one thing PC can learn from consoles is that this kind of approach doesn't always guarantee high sales.

Wii and DS get bashed a lot over their graphics, but look at the cool games coming from those systems, when effort is put into them and working around what's avaialble. I yearn for the day when PC developers wake up and realise this, and that there's still a lot they can do with current tech. It just a matter of them wanting to try.

By slowing and standardising the tech on PC a bit (say upgrade PC tech every 2 years, things would pick up. Unfortunately, due to hardware manufacturers this will never happen.

PC Piracy adds fuel to the fire.

Mouse & Keyboard > Controllers for FPS and RTS games. But even then, one can plug a 360 controller into their PC to play games that are better suited for a controller. I understand that Cliff wants more money so he can buy that nice gold-plated car he always wanted, but look at Valve and Blizzard and how well they're doing in the PC market. Maybe if Gears of War wasn't so crappily optimized for PC and maybe if they didn't use Windows Live then they'd sell more copies. Windows Live is a neat concept, but you can't expect PC Gamers to subscribe to a damn service when there's better, more stable alternatives like Steam.

So does being a big PC fan mean you lose your ability to read? Because that's what I'm seeing here from some people.

Cliffy is not saying that PC gaming is dying, far from it, he's just saying that PC gaming is re-focusing on another market as it where because that's what selling, MMO's always a big market and Sim type games are accesible to everyone, hell I don't like PC gaming but I still drop like 5 hours on the Sims 2, its a fun game, doesn't require my PC to be a monolith and its fun.

Look at the Wii, that shows you how big the casual market is, PC gaming is business like anything else, it makes sense that devs would move away from it if they saw more money in consoles.

Spore will sell well because its a sim type game that looks very accesible, see where I'm going with this? It has nothing to do with PC gaming dying, just a refocus.

And Guitar is also correct, all machines have their fare share of pirates, its a lot easier to do it on a PC though, all you need is a torrent of the game and the crack for it, both of which pop up within days of the games release, hell if I'm not mistaken, BioShock was easier to pirate on the PC than it was to buy thanks to the ridiculous security measures, that pushes people away as well.

There's also the huge drought of quality titles, moreso than with a Nintendo console, shooters, RTS games and maybe an RPG. Consoles have way more than that.

@Caffeine

Dude, take off your fanboy goggles and learn to read, its ridiculous that you would think less of what Cliffy is saying just because you assume that he's jealous over the sales of the Overrated box. Gears sold 4 million on the 360, he has nothing to prove.

Because of that box with 4 turds in it, it sold very well, why? Valve works with certain standards and doesn't require you have a powerful PC, they also run very well, they seem to be the only company that does such a thing though.

For me, playing FPS with a gamepad instead a mouse/keyboard setup is lol. Although, the last great PC exclusive (?) game I can remember is Civ IV. Though I wouldnt want to play my TF2 or Bioshock on a console.
I agree with the other guys, they stopped concentrating on gameplay stuff and started just making random nice graphic FPSs. That sucks, especially for a Hardcore PC gamer.

"it's not supposed to only be about sales numbers, it's about making fun games"

No, that's the point actually: if you make a fun game you should be able to have good sales numbers, since you make a living out of it.

The point of the guy is, at the moment, it's much easier to program a successful game (an "harcore gamer" game) and have proper recognition (in terms of copies sold) on consoles than rather than on pc.

The only hugely successful PC games are casual games and MMORPG, since they cater to different gamers and use different subscription models. I'm a veteran PC games and it pains me to see Bioware RPGs, Assassin's Creed and so on released several months later on PC , almost as an afterthought.

I think that consoles are popular because, face it, it takes no technical skill to set up and you buy just the console with the controller. For Pc, it gets technical if you want to have the latest and greatest. I'm sure for us nerds, it all comes easy setting up the PC, but for people that don't bother to think and are not willing to learn how to work on PC's, they have to go out and shell out money for someone to work on it for them.

So in their perspective, consoles are more attractive.

Consoles are more affordable and accessible. A strong high-end PC costs too much money, especially when something gets better every three months.

I agree with much of what has been said.

The ease of piracy on the PCs is leading to internet based authentication, whether an MMO (only able to use it on their servers) or through some form of copy right protection (Steam). While this is an unfortunate necessity (seemingly... *points to Stardock* My favorite people ever), I'd much rather plug a copy in my console, and play it. While I'm not a pirate, its just annoying (especially when my internet is down, I can't play my game... and I payed for it).

For the people who hold that for an FPS, KB+M is superior... I agree with you, in most instances. But... the PS3 does allow you to use a KB+M. And you can play it while sitting on your couch (a lot easier to set up too).

The cost of PC gaming is also something that keeps me personally away from it. I know that some people have the disposable income to upgrade their rig to play PC games... me, personally? I don't... I use my cheap laptop to play old PC games (not a lot of the non-console PC games appeal to me anyways... but I'm going on a tangent)

Consoles are not as easy to pirate (having to buy special equipment/mod chips/whatever), whereas a lot of people know how to run any of the popular virtual drive programs, or how to find keygens. while PC gaming is not dead, its a lot harder to turn a profit on it (unless you're blizzard... but they have WoW... they're set for life, pretty much)

and I don't understand why someone who represents a company is getting gaffe for saying what is a fundamental fact: PC games don't sell as well, on average, as console games do. Unless its the exceptions he specifically mentioned. Why is anyone arguing this?

As B-Radicate says, PC Gaming died when developers started concentrating their engines on the absolute latest hardware. Luckily, there are still developers like Infinity Ward and Valve who build games on top of extremely scalable engines, but for every Valve you have twenty Cryteks working with hardware that's not even out yet. Call of Duty 2 (and Half Life 2, for that matter) ran perfectly fine on my computer prior to upgrading, with its GeForce 5500, 1.8gHz CPU, and 512MB of RAM. The reason games like The Sims and WoW are doing so well is at least in part due to their massive scalability; developers for other games need to start working with that.

What went wrong is that fucking video cards cost $600 and you have to buy one EVERY YEAR in order to play new games.

It's too fucking expensive. Buy a console for $400 and it lasts for six years. I'd say that the cost to performance ratio is leaning towards consoles JUST A LITTLE.

@ flaming burrito: PC gaming is not just as successful or even close to being as successful as console gaming. Last year's sales figures showed that PC games were only 14% of the gaming market. The rest of the sales (86%) were all consoles and handhelds. The hard numbers are $910.7 million in PC game sales out of the $18.85 billion total games market. Don't just say how you "feel;" look at the numbers.

A lot of this article has been comparing new-gen consoles to PCs and saying the differences are diminishing, etc. etc. But, the average consumer does not care about what we, the hardcore, care about. The average consumer wants to play games to have fun, to relax, to escape. A console will always be the superior platform for this. With consoles there is no install time, no drivers to install, no need to update hardware, and game updates are seemless or non-existent. Further, console games are played on a TV from a chair or other piece of furniture with a controller in hand. How many people want to sit upright at a desk with a mouse and keyboard staring at a monitor during their "fun" time? For many people, this is what they do 8-9 hours a day--what they're trying to escape from.

Umm, nothing. I love my PC gaming. there's no Hentai/Dating Sims on 360, nor is there any piracy that doesn't require voiding your warranty.

Consoles are fun for some things, but I've never thought of my PC as second to a console. EVER.

Cliffy B can go fornicate himself, FYI, I HATED Gears of War, but I'm just not into FPSs, and I STILL love my PC for gaming, who freaking knew?

@HarassmentPanda: Those hard numbers don't include digital sales (ie: Steam). Heck, PC gaming is still very strong in Europe and parts of Asia, so little weight should be given to NDP numbers alone for an accurate representation of PC sales.

I actually have both my consoles and PC hooked up to the same entertainment setup, so I can rest comfortably on the couch while still using the PC (have myself a retro-fitted ironing board for k/m play). I'm sure I'm a minority in that department, but it's certainly not out of the question that a PC environment can be adapted to share the same setup a console uses.

I know NPD numbers are imperfect, but I will shit my pants and invest every dime I have into Valve if they did anywhere close to $18 billion in sales over Steam. Whether it's 14% or 20%, PC games are no where near "just as successful, if not more than consoles," which was the point of me bringing up the numbers anyway.

Either way, if you are paying more than 600$ for a new computer thats just powerful enough to play some casual games you've already spent enough to get a PS3/360 and a game or two. Or if you don't have a Wii thats enough to get one and every decent game thats on it!

The simple fact that the PC HAS separate components that can number over a couple hundred dollars makes it too expensive.
I love my PC and I built it myself about 4 years ago, but I don't use it for gaming though, I don't like MMORPGs or FPS's very much. But I do like to have my PC set up next to my console tv so that I can watch whatever while I'm playing a game.

Whatever makes the money is going to be the primary focus. They need to figure out how to make pc games that don't require ridiculous specs to play them. If the gamer has to spend 300 dollars every time a new game comes out, he's not going to buy as many games. PC will boom again once the average computer can play crysis, but until then people will always look at the console as the easier, more affordable, hassle free way to game.

Console gaming is the simple, smart, economical choice. It's more accessible. That's it, that's the bottomline. PC gaming will never again surpass consoles, as long as the consoles continue to provide the current level of overall quality. It's not really a matter of one being better than the other, though.

At this point, PC gaming is only for those who already have a predisposition towards the platform. Pulling in new PC gamers is going to be increasingly difficult, with consoles' dominance.

manta's Top 3 Reasons Why The General Gaming Public Prefer Consoles

1. People are naturally social creatures. Consoles allow you to be social. There are very, very few PC that allow offline multiplayer on the same computer.

2. The everyday video game consumer does not want to figure out big or how fast their CPU, GPU, or RAM needs to be in order to play their favorite game. A parent can go out, by a system, and know it will play all the games for that system.

3. Let's face it, having a top end computer will cost you around a thousand bucks. Sure, you can get a fine mid-range machine for a little less than half that, but you're not going to get the best graphics/performance out of your game. Most people want the shiny lights and pretty shadows. An XBox 360 or PS3 is not going to need to be upgraded in 4 years when new games are coming out for them.

I say all this as being a PS3/Gaming PC owner myself. I thoroughly enjoy both of my systems. My PC is near top of the line for bang/buck. Any more upgrades would cost a ridiculous amount of money for little performance. But I love my RTS, MMOs, FPSs, and western RPGs. With my PS3, I get awesome jRPGs, series that I love (MGS, DMC etc.), as well as new IPs that allow me to enjoy my HDTV to it's fullest (Uncharted, Warhawk).

PC gaming is just has different games on it, that's all. RTS will never work as well with consoles, neither will MMOs. FPS have been huge in the console market, but anyone with PC experience would tell you that a mouse and keyboard is a better control scheme.

And on the other hand, mouse and keyboard just doesn't work for action games like Devil May Cry or God of War.

Each platform has their own specialty, and I'm happy that they're both cranking out awesome games.

PC's work great for RTS, FPS.
There's this big hacking problem on PC fps's.

Sports / racing, platforms, fighting games are good on consoles. FPS's work ok, but I can never substitute a keyboard / mouse for the job. FPS's are much less prone to hacking on consoles, hence a more fair multiplayer experience.

Also, resolution is an overrated issue. It is as if every pc needs to run the games at 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF. What the hell? I can enjoy a game at 1024x768, if higher resolutions means lower frame rates.

Where do people keep getting the idea that PC gaming is SOOOO much more expensive than console gaming. I made my PC around the same time the current gen consoles came out, for about the same price as a 360 and PS3 and I still run Crysis on high with great frame rate. and WTF are people talking about when they say that their are no good games for PC only? I am a RTS and RPG guy and I defy you to find me a better RTS on a console than Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander, AOE3. Hell you couldn't find one that is better than Warcraft 3 and how long ago did that come out?

And don't even get me started on RPGs(western, you can keep you gay little boys/girls in tight pants) So you have Oblivion big deal. I would still rather play Diablo 2, or Neverwinter Nights.

And on a side note, I have never once pirated a game for my PC.(correction, i did, then went out and bought the game because it was worth owning) The only games that should ever be pirated are the crap ports we have been getting for years. Maybe if anyone who felt like stabbing them selves in the eyes trying to play the POS that the console sends us would do some good and stop encouraging developers. Honestly, can we have a just a little respect? The consoles get to play all of our good FPSs and I say great, share the love, but then they give us garbage like Gears of War and Halo 2 and you have to wonder if this is just a trap to try to catch Pirates in the act.

ok ranting over

Never thought I would hear Cliffy being all corporate out in the public. It's nice to know that he still holds the platform that made Epic as a company successful in the first place, so near and dear. Making good games and sales has nothing to do with it though, right? When was the last great PC game from Epic? UT2K? Before that, UT99, few and far between Cliffy. What does he expect? UT3 is not a good game.

There are plenty of PC games that give me a better experience, including all FPS's, since I can't stand thumbsticks next to the mouse/keyboard. Consoles can streamline the experience all they want, but until they offer M/K input and of course modding, it will always a be a lesser form of gaming imo. PC Gaming is for enthusiasts, it's always been niche compared to consoles, this is nothing new, and he knows that.

As for games, Sins of a Solar Empire(4x Strategy) is a recent one that's simply amazing, The Witcher(RPG) is another, Crysis(FPS) of course, World In Conflict(RTS) etc. and plenty more have all made the PC a great experience and great platform in recent history. If Cliffy wants better PC sales, he needs to make better games. UT3 was the worst in series, and Gears PC was a year late and forced us to use GFW Live. And he wonders...

Upcoming this year, the PC is more than fine, with Starcraft 2, Spore, Stalker Clear Sky, and many many more, I couldn't be happier with the Platform.

The last games I purchased for my PC were Tiberian Sun and Half Life. The Jones Syndrome of addictive like expensive upgrading was not for me, so as much as I like some PC games, I had to bail and opt for my consoles instead.

Now that consoles are on a PC tech level, and also with a much wider variety of games, consoles will get the sales that keep breathing life into the industry. Without them gaming would suffer a huge set back.

Blizzard/Activision have lived off the WoW for years now and fairplay to that. Blizzard are aware that with WoWs uptake, they can live off of it for ages and not bother making the gamble on creating new games. This is why it took so long for Starcraft 2 to turn up. Starcraft 2 will again keep Blizzard in the zone, where they can control their destiny. Many developers aren't so lucky.

With user created content now moving onto consoles too, the PC is losing ground, while sitting on its everchanging throne of expensive hardware. Frankly, its a luxury the PC market can't afford to maintain its effective survival (no matter how the hardcore army try to defend it). Manufacturers of PC parts need to understand that and act accordingly, and with this I hope MS are successful.

I do agree MS should make Windows Live free on PCs, since that's the way its always been. Asking them to pay after many years of freedom is harsh and won't encourage anyone. By ditching this, many PC gamers would get behind MS and the PC much more. Mr Gates need to get that into his skull, since he already gets plenty out of PC owners just for Window itself.

So come on MS, make sure you shout about PC 360 pad support too, as this alone may get more genres of games converted to PC.

Well, I’ve never had a PC that could play games, so I never got into PC gaming. Frankly, I prefer lying on my couch to sitting hunched over at a desk when I’m playing my games — but that’s just me. The facts that many others have mentioned are the real issue here:

1) PC gaming is too complicated for the average Joe (drivers, upgrades, installation, etc.), especially when he knows that he can just go out and buy a console that will play all the games that are produced for it.

2) PC gaming is too expensive for the average gamer — I’m not going to repeat what manta said a few comments ago, but look at his reason #3.

3) PC gaming also has to deal with the proliferation of piracy, which is not nearly as much of an issue on consoles (R4 notwithstanding). If I had a PSP, I wouldn’t want to send someone my battery and have them solder it so I could do all kinds of crazy shit on the PSP, but pirating PC games requires no effort beyond finding a torrent for a game that has a keygen.

4) Generally, people’s TVs are significantly larger than their computer monitors. My laptop has a 15" screen, while my dorm-size LCD HDTV is a 26-incher. Most people who have HDTVs have larger ones than mine, and that’s a big factor in deciding what to play games on.

So I wouldn’t say that PC gaming is “dead” or “dying”, but Cliffy B is right: the PC market is moving in a different direction — hell, consoles are going casual, too; just look at the game Spielberg is developing for the Wii.

The piracy argument seems kind of dumb. People loan each other books, movies and CDs constantly...and there is constant piracy there. But you don't hear people talking about abandoning those formats?

And again, does this really stand up to inspection? One look at the stuff people are calling the best games of last year: Stuff like Portal and the Orange Box, Bioshock, Super Mario Galaxy, Puzzle Quest, Call of Duty 4.... It seems you get a Wii and a PC with a Steam subscription you were set for getting the best games of 2007?

P.S. I don't see why we are trying so hard to establish any of the systems as the "superior" gaming system that everyone else has to rally around. Consoles have opened a new market, and while that new market plays games on the console exclusivity, there is still that old market share. I don't believe it shrunk much, but it simply didn't grow in proportion with the console market. Right now PC gaming is undergoing a change that will refocus it to a better defined audience and make it accessible to more people.

A console has one purpose and one purpose only: a piece of hardware to play games. For a lot of PC gamers, a computer is more than just a gaming system. It is a tool, a jack of all trades. There are reasons to have a nice PC for more than just gaming. For a lot of us, there is the whole technology aspect and hobby side. The same urge that gets people with a wrench under their car modding their engine is the same drive that makes a PC gamer open the case and throw in a new stick of RAM.

I say, for each his own. There is a nich for all of us and there is a system that fits each of our desires. There is no need to try to artificially consolidate all gaming systems into one device and declare it the non-plus-ultra of video game entertainment.

I have to say something in defense of Crysis. Why are people infuriated by the fact that their machine can't run it on maximal setting? My PC can't, but I still think it is an admirable effort that there are companies out there constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible. These sort of games raise the bar and fuel development of even newer and better software and hardware that will benefit the console and the PC market.

Seriously though, anyone that bought a PC in the last 3-4 years could probably upgrade it to gaming capabilities with the same amount of money that a 360 or PS3 would cost.

I think a lot of the problem is thanks to game companies and hardware vendors that made it look like it's necessary to have the latest in technology to be able to play a game, most "minimum requirements" aren't out of this world, but we don't trust them, and that's a problem.

You said: Either way, if you are paying more than 600$ for a new computer thats just powerful enough to play some casual games you've already spent enough to get a PS3/360 and a game or two. Or if you don't have a Wii thats enough to get one and every decent game thats on it!

You forget that with that $600+ PC you get a gaming machine AND MORE. It's such a bigger investment with a PC. Not only can you game, but you can do more than any console could.

And let's not forget the bullshit pricing 360 & PS3 games have. Can anybody tell me why Gears of War/BioShock were $60 new on consoles and $50 new on PC's?

Everyone keeps making this into an argument over which is better: consoles or PCs? But that's not what this article was about. Cliffy is saying that console games are outselling PC games and that is appealing to developers. I don't think that anyone can argue against that being 100% fact.

Everyone has their own preference as to platform is "better," but that doesn't change the sales figures and the way the industry is evolving. Stick to the topic, otherwise STFUAJPG!

Also, to tin cow, "And again, does this really stand up to inspection? One look at the stuff people are calling the best games of last year: Stuff like Portal and the Orange Box, Bioshock, Super Mario Galaxy, Puzzle Quest, Call of Duty 4.... It seems you get a Wii and a PC with a Steam subscription you were set for getting the best games of 2007?"

Also seems like you could get a Wii and a 360 to get all of the games you mentioned as well as more of the "year's best" such as Halo 3, Mass Effect, Rock Band, Burnout, etc.

@Knives

I blame misinformed console owners spreading FUD on the internet more than the hardware and game companies.

Sure, some of the requirements on the box are hard to decipher for a casual user. But companies are not going out of their way to tell you that "If you can't play this game on max, you can't play it at all" like some of the misinformed are shouting (not just specific to this post).

What went wrong? $500 video cards that are obsolete in 2 years. Discussion over.

"The piracy argument seems kind of dumb. People loan each other books, movies and CDs constantly...and there is constant piracy there. But you don't hear people talking about abandoning those formats?"

That analogy doesn't really hold up though. First of all, what alternative is there for books and movies? Second of all, are you not aware of the current fall of the record industry as it refuses to give up the old ways of making money off cds?

Piracy is a big ass factor in this.

its true and he's absolutely right...

as we ( non-pirating-gamers ) have allways warned the pirates, this will stop them from making games for the PC eventually...

another few years of pirated games and all the PC-players will be playing is lame-ass console-ports that were just made to shut them up...

Cliffy B is like the American version of Itagaki (DOA haters STFU and don't respond), says exactly what he thinks, regardless of offensiveness, and honestly what he does say is usually spot on most of the time. I definitely agree with what he's saying about PC gaming and while its sad, just like with the Wii its the fault of the gamers who are promoting this shit. And the piracy is a huge ass factor here.

PC gaming has changed as a market, but it's not dying. Cliffy is just sad Epic got left behind while Valve and smaller developers took over the space with online distribution. The future of consoles is already on PC, as per usual. It's just in the form of a business model, instead of graphics and features and such.

But I'm sure they're happy being owned by Microsoft, instead of the pure unfiltered profit and independence Valve is afforded by Steam.

when I bought supreme commander, I was startled at what was the gameplay at "recomended specs". the game was unplayable and to this day I havent seen a rig run it flawless at high rez. I know they are out there but I havent seen one yet. That was when I bought an xbox. I was a pc gamer for years (tribes 2 bitches) but I am tired of building a rig that game makers are going to make obsolete with their next game.
I am missing some games. I would own CoD4, UT3, Bioshock on PC if my rig would run them. I got bioshock on xbox and I will have UT3 when its released. Sorry crysis and sorry pc gameing.
whose fault? First game companies, for being unconcerned with the low end computers.
Second, hardware manufactures. Overpriced high end parts price games out of my reach.
