Classic Final Fantasy artist draws Final Fantasy XIII photo

Yoshitaka Amano should be known to all true Final Fantasy fans. Even if you don't know the name, you certainly know the art, as he was responsible for all those classic conceptual pictures up until Tetsuya Nomura replaced him. Amano did not lend his pencil to Final Fantasy XIII, but that hasn't stopped him revealing what it would be like if he did

In the latest Famitsu, Amano has redrawn FF XIII characters in his own inimitable style. The game's main cast has been given his distinct look and the results, one must say, are pretty badical. For the nostalgic among us, this really does bring back memories, right?

Not that I think Nomura does a bad job, but Amano's classic drawings are difficult to forget.

I have an artbook by Amano called "Dawn". I check it out every once and a while and I agree with you Jim, his style is truly unforgettable.

His character designs are somewhat weird, but I think he absolutely excels at monster designs. Some of the creatures in that artbook are stunningand pretty damn scary.

I definitely recommend the book if anyone finds it around, I found mine at a random Barnes & Noble.

Its too bad the characters aren't sprites anymore. The Japanese sense of style was so much easier to swallow when they were just pixelated works of genius with Amano's art as the back drop of inspiration.

I know Amano. But I've never been a huge fan of his style. He's good, but he tends to make people look overly lanky to my eyes.

Amano has always been and will always be superior to Nomura.

Amano made "generic jrpg style" classy.

I really think Celes is his best work (although his fave Terra is phenomonial as well)

Seriously that Final Fantasy III Nintendo Player's Guide, I would just stare at his artwork, especially for the two main women.

They need to make a Final Fantasy game that looks like this in real time. Or at least a FF6 remake.

Amano is the man who can turn a melodramatic cliche JRPG into a beautiful piece of work. Well, at least with FF1-6 anyways. I remember playing FF6 and looking at his art for it and just imagining the game taking place in a world in his style. Absolutely beautiful and its minimalistic flair left a lot to the imagination.

I have nothing against Nomura, games like The World Ends With You would look TERRIBLE in Amano's style, but Nomura's FF artwork is the reason why people associate JRPGs with cliche anime art.

am I the only one who things the drawing is too much like the normal designs? Yoshitaka Amano's illustrations are usually much more extravagant than that.

I think it's the faces mostly, the women look unappealing while the men look even MORE like women.

As an artist myself I have always respected Amanos art style and I think it is a very appealing stylized take on character design. That said, I have always liked Nomuras designs more, and I still do.

Nostalgia-breaking Fact: The vast majority of FFVI monster designs were by Nomura, few were by Amano, though sprite for Terra, Kefka and the other protagonists were. Job and character concept for Setzer, also Nomura's.

Also, Amano not baing the main artist for FF anymore is probably the best thing that could have ever happened to him. Uematsu eventually had to dodge the bullet Amano would have gotten hit with. Nomura actually doesn't do a bad job, people just like to go batshit hate on him for some reason.

He actually a better job when left to his own projects and is not joined at the hip with Kitase for a project. Most of the Compilation of FFVII was a mess save for Crisis Core. Kingdom Hearts and The World Ends With You are Nomura's own thing and he does pretty well with them.

I really prefer they both kept their distance from Final Fantasy, FFXI and FFXI were a breath of fresh air for the series. Perhaps not appreciated by all, but new and different experiences all the same. Nomura only did the race concepts for FFXI, but the FFXII lead artist has certainly surpassed those designs with what he's doing for FFXIV.

I love Yoshitaka Amano's art style, and it is downright criminal that he was ever replaced for the Final Fantasy series. Not only is his art good, it's also unique. It stands out from the generic anime style character designs that are in the later Final Fantasy games and in most JRPGs in general, a style I really can't stand.
I like to compare his art to the artist who designed the characters for Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and subsequent Castlevania games, because they are both beautiful, unique and both eventually got replaced in favour of dull anime style art.

When I was a kid, Amano's artwork really struck a chord with me. In my feeble 8 year old mind, the artwork was almost creepy what with the expressionless faces and wild hair. Hauntingly beautiful and full of character.

Of course Nomura isn't bad, and you can argue his style lends itself better to computer generated animation, but the animu schtick doesn't draw out the same emotions as the old FF artwork did.

The thing that makes Nomura's work stand out to me is it's sharp nature. Which is full fucking force especially in "The World Ends You"

I think they're both great. My favorite game Amano's done his Final Fantasy 9.

Anyone who hasn't seen Angel's Egg,please do see it.Nothing is more whacked up than references to Christianity(courtesy of Mamoru Hoshii himself),and how Amano's artwork feels like in motion. The game would cost much, much more than what FFXIII and possibly FFXIV combined..........

Honestly, I didn't even know of Nomura until Final Fantasy X. I looked at the characters and was thinking "Why the hell did they use the same dull-as-hell characters designs from Final Fantasy VIII?" "They were both done by Nomura" was the response I got - it kinda instantly made me dislike the guy.

I do like some of his work. I found Parasite Eve and Brave Fencer Musashi to have good character designs, and The World Ends With You had... unique line-art, I guess. The characters still seemed way too "Kingdom Hearts"-ish, but at least the thick line-art made it somewhat interesting. I just don't like his zippers & belts getting too close to a series that used to be dominated by Amano's ethereal designs.

I've always referred to Nomura's art as "late Final Fantasy"ish, but never once have I heard someone calling it "Kingdom Hearts"ish.

Yes,once again,I come to bear hate upon Kingdom Hearts........

But seriously,Nomura's designs got repetitive at FFX.I welcome back Amano with my arms wide open.

Whenever Amano draws characters designed by Nomura, it's really obvious because they're not as good. They seem overly simple for his style. I prefer Amano because it has more of a fantastical element to it (compare FF9 to 10 for example) which make the characters he designs worthy of being in a game called Final FANTASY.

Whoever's been in charge of the artwork, I've been heavily underwhelmed by the characters and villains in Final Fantasy games since the 7th game (save for Vivi and maybe Freya). FF7's overall story did a good job of carrying the characters along, but their designs were so superficial and emotionless that it was hard to connect with them. FF8 was a different scenario altogether. In that game, I felt the overall story was kind of a toss-off and, as such, was forced to glean more satisfaction from the character interactions. To some extent, this was well done, but the characters still felt cold and lifeless. FF9 did a great job of matching the characters' looks to the game's story and script, though some of the designs were fairly shitty (Amarant, Steiner, the Queen who looked like she belonged in the Beatles Yellow Submarine movie). FFX's overall look creeped me out and XII's characters made me feel like they were just going through the motions.
