Class system ditched for Aliens vs. Predator photo

Rebellion has promised that we'll be seeing Aliens vs. Predator multiplayer before the year is out, but there's bad news for fans of class systems. Claiming that the "purity" of the game's three species is more important, head of art Tim Jones doesn't want to muddle things up with classes.

"Our multiplayer reveal will be happening later this year," he states. "Suffice to say that you will able to play as all three species and there are some great game modes that make the most of each of their special abilities.

"We’ve looked very carefully at what has worked well and proven popular in previous games -- and what has not -- and we are focusing on making each species work as best as it can without complicating things further with class-systems. There is a beautiful purity to the three-species combat we have."

I'd just asked Rebellion myself about classes, so I guess that's buggered one of my interview questions for me. It's a shame that classes won't be on the cards, but if the combat is good enough, it shouldn't matter too much. Once you start inventing your own Alien castes, you do tend to jump the shark, even if it does lead to awesome things like Kenner's ludicrous Killer Crab Alien.

This bodes poorly ...how can one have a Sniper Class or Recon Preds when there are no classes :/ I am now concerned the multiplayer will be a consolified affair even if it's based on this single item. Classes basically made games like RTCW and AVP multiplayer a unique affair - hopefully there will still be customisation which I guess would make up for it.

Now I have no experience with the previous AVP games, but I am of the belief that class-based multiplayer is not always preferable.

There is always the risk that the classes will be unbalanced or some will be flat out useless.

I'd rather that the multiplayer is balanced and competitive, rather than have tacked on class system.

I'm assuming they won't have a class system persay, but will have a weapons selection system. - How that will work for the Xeno's I don't know, but i'd like to think that the Marines get a choice of weapons, preds too.

Still fucking excited about this game. Day one purchase for sure.

I'm not a huge fan of classed based FPS games anyway so no loss for me.

I loved AvP2 and this greatly saddens me.

Just because everyone is doing a friggin' class system doesn't mean it should be mandatory.

And besides, I honestly don't see how AvP cleass systems would work anyway.

@Jon B

They did it in the second one rather well-

Aliens:
Drone
Runner
Predalien
Praetorian

The Predator classes were broken up by weaponry as well as the humans and the Humans got an exo-suit as their heaviest class which while amazing depended on it's teammates since it lacked a motion tracker.

As well this opened up a neat game mode known as Alien Lifecycle in which alien players started out as face huggers and depending on who they impregnated determined their class.

The first AvP's non-class system actually had horrifically poor balance due to the fact that there was little reason or balance to not play as the Predator.

Ah that's a shame aint it?

AvP 2 did it fairly well, hopefully they'll have some options for weapons etc, but the lack of a playable runner alien saddens me.

I'm weary of a classless AvP game. If it's just going to end up being a pretty FPS rock/paper/scissors game, then It's a big step back. The class system prevented the human players from knowing what to expect from the alien and predator classes, so they would have to be on their toes constantly. Sure you know what the possibilities were, but preparing for all of them is extremely difficult. If they have a weapon or other sort of customization included, it would be better than giving humans and predators access to all of their gear. I see aliens easily being extremely OP or not a threat, either case is bad. I hope they are right and I'm wrong though.

Honestly, I don't mind it that much. In AvP2, at least when I played online, classes really didn't seem to matter much at all. I never saw anyone play a sniper marine, because half the time they were useless. Aliens didn't make that much of a difference, really just speed and hp. The only time I really played any other class was with Predator, and that's just because of the weapon load outs. They can easily get the same thing going on with a selectable weapon load out rather than a set class system.

It still won't stop me from playing. Class systems are fine, but it's the level and perk systems I hate the most.

What!? the AvP universe lends itself perfectly to a class system... But whatever...

Ok you know what? Bullshit. What made AvP2's multiplayer so god damn amazing was the class-based Alien Life Cycle mode. So clearly they looked at that and understood how awesome it was, right? I mean, what other reason is there to cut it?

Retardation, that's what this is. Beautiful purity my ass.

As I said if they replace it with something better fine. But if we're all running around with one type of alien and marines permanently set to assault rifles it'll be a disappointment.

I was unaware that this game had classes, so this doesn't really disappoint me at all. Still, I hope this doesn't influence any negative sales for the game, because it looks absolutely fantastic.

Yeah I don't see the need for classes in an AVP game. Your either Marine, Alien or Predator. That's good enough. Thing is I wonder how they're going to balance thing out between all three. You just can't make them all equals in one on one combat.

i love classes, or at least some way to customize your play style. im sure there is a way to justify having a stealthy like alien, and a balls to the wall beef cake alien
and same goes for the other races as well, humans moreso
