Correction: Elder Scrolls 5 not ruled out at QuakeCon photo

Bethesda’s Todd Howard did not rule out the possibility of an Elder Scrolls 5 during his talk at QuakeCon. This runs contrary to our original story -- which is totally and utterly wrong -- based on notes and written with the anxious haste of a blogger. Blame me for not following up. Blame me for not taking the care to realize I attributed not only false words, but also false words to the wrong man.

“Don’t look for a new Elder Scrolls game in the near future,” Howard actually said in response to the fan question before stating the franchise would continue. In a recent posting on the Bethesda blog, PR man Pete Hines clarifies that Howard seemed dodgy because he didn’t want to talk specifics.

As for the MMO question Howard fielded with “I guess there’s a chance,” it was a statement made in jest. As Hines clarifies, Howard doesn’t even work for the team that is handling the MMO. It also hasn’t been announced, as we stated previously but reiterate here for clarification purposes.

So, an Elder Scrolls 5 may happen and a ZeniMax Online Studios-created MMO is on the way.

Fuck year! That makes a good measure more sense. Nice of Bethsoft to put a lid on this can of worms on the first day of business after a weekend of speculation and horror. The fanboys on the bethsoft forums are vindicated and I can go back to waiting patiently for TES5.

Everything in its place.

Where is the rage coverage from Quakecon? I was at the press conference, and this game looks awesome.

If you want to play the augur's game, taking into account that Bethseda are notoriously mum about their projects until they've got them well along into development, this 'next project' they're currently at work on is fairly likely to be TES5. Previous statments hinted at the reveal of a new TES game in 2010, Fallout Vegas is being worked on by Obsidian, and as developers they only have so many IPs. Could be something new, but its probably TESV, and we just won't know for sure for another year, probably.

I'm waiting for TES5, Oblivion is great but a improved version would be awesome!

You know they're working on ESV, and probably have been for a while already. It's Todd's baby and Bethesda's cash cow. Still, I wouldn't expect the next installment until 2011.

Here's hoping they switch from the Gamebryo engine to id tech5. Those megatextures would go a long way in improving variety in the world, so that we don't see the same old caves and ruins (or subways in Fallout) repeated over and over...

I can't wait...Elder Scrolls is one of my favorite series of all time, and I think they can do great things.

@HiddenAHB
It already came out: it's called "Morrowind".

Thank goodness. A body can only mod Oblivion so much before it collapses in on itself in a singularity of naked anthropomorphic Khajiit mods.

If they make a new Elder Scrolls I desperately hope against hope that it is NOT SET IN TAMRIEL.

Please please please Bethesda I would absolutely love an ES5 game to be set in the continent of Akavir. All new landscapes all new races: Kamal, Tsaesci, Ka Po' Tun and Tang Mo (Snow Demon people, Snakemen, Tigerman more feral than the Khajit and the Apemen).

I mean Bethesda even set it up for this since in ES lore after Dagoth Ur was destroyed, the Council Gods stripped of their status and Hircine banished, the Nerevarine (protagonist from ES3) traveled to lands of Akavir and has yet to return from his unspoken quest.

Well, that is good, but he also seems to have implied that we'll be waiting a long time for Elder Scrolls: V.
